MSNBC's Contessa Brewer on Thursday didn't try and hide her opinion on illegal immigration, spinning such lawbreakers as having a "pivotal role in making our country work." The News Live host interviewed Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles and opined, "They do all kinds of jobs that keep our economy going, that keep us fed, our houses clean, our gardens tended and the like." [Audio available here.]

Brewer appeared absolutely baffled by the fact that most Americans agree with Arizona's new immigration law: "When you're looking at removing those people from the system, it's odd to me that you would get so much support."

Continuing her rather lengthy assessment, the anchor offered this rather loaded question: "Why do you think there's so much support for this law when the consequences of removing those estimated 12 million illegal immigrants could devastate our economy?"

Had Limbaugh, Boortz, Hannity or Ingraham said the same thing, there'd be such an outrage, the protest would have already started. Don Imus was suspended over less. To suggest that illegals are good for cleaning our homes and raking our yards, and not much else ? Please! Won't somebody stop the hypocrisy !

Dennis Miller said it best. If you're gonna come over, don't sneak in the bathroom window. Come through the front door and sign the guest book. Is that too much to ask ?

Likewise, if you're gonna hire 'em, don't sneak 'em in through the garage door. Bring 'em in the front door and pay 'em a fair legal wage. And pay your damn payroll taxes on 'em!

BTW, you seem to have quite a crush on Contessa Brewer.

She's not too bright, but easy on the eyes.

You're not sly, are ya ?

And I'm all for slapping it to businesses that employ illegals. But think about it. If folks will risk getting here to work for pennies on the dollar what they'd otherwise make, if they were citizens, how many more will come if pay is increased ? How will that be a deterrent ? Sure, there will be less jobs available, but more would try to come to GET those jobs....

Clamp down on the borders, is the best, logical first step in solving this problem.

Okay, HOW do you plan to "clamp down on the borders"?

What's your plan?

And how much federal spending are you willing to put up with to do it?

Have you ever SEEN the border?

I'd like to hear someone lay out a realistic plan on HOW they'd "close the border" or "clamp down on the border". It's thousands of miles of mostly desert landscape. Most of it isn't even marked, and the vast majority of it has few fences, no walls, no guards.

Now, if you'd like to talk about hiring tens of thousands of border guards, that's a conversation we can have. But first you have to agree to not whine about the cost of it.

It would be EASIER, and more economically viable, to "clamp down" on employers. As I've pointed out, when you buy a gun, you have to go through a federal background check. It should be the same when you hire an employee; they go through a thorough check, and if they don't pass, you can't hire them, and it's a felony if you do. And if you get nailed for that, you can lose your business, your home (if you hire an illegal nanny, maid, or gardener, for instance), your car if you transport them, etc. Get serious about "clamping down" on people who hire illegals. If people want to hire illegals, they'll come in, just like with illegal drugs - if there were no market, there'd be no problem. Quit trying to treat the problem, and start treating the CAUSE.

I don't like what she said or how she said it, but that's only my opinion. I know nothing of Brewer, as I only watch TV in the evenings, and she's not on then. But via Wikipedia:
Quote:

Professor of Law Francine Lipman writes that the belief that illegal migrants are exploiting the US economy and that they cost more in services than they contribute to the economy is "undeniably false". Lipman asserts that "undocumented immigrants actually contribute more to public coffers in taxes than they cost in social services" and "contribute to the U.S. economy through their investments and consumption of goods and services; filling of millions of essential worker positions resulting in subsidiary job creation, increased productivity and lower costs of goods and services; and unrequited contributions to Social Security, Medicare and unemployment insurance programs." (J. Lipman, Francine, J. (Spring 2006) The Tax Lawyer).

One survey conducted in the 1980s (before the current wave of illegal immigration) found that 76 percent of economists felt recent illegal immigration had a positive effect on the economy.

most rudimentary of public opinion polls will show the importance of immigrants in our economy. Polls sponsored by the Gallup Organization and the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press are not necessary.

Instead, observe this method: By a show of hands, how many like tomatoes, oranges or cherries? Or how about chicken? If so, do you also like not having to pay outrageous prices for these products?

If you answered "yes" to all of the above, then you have immigrants to thank. More specifically, you have predominantly Hispanic immigrants to thank. And chances are your have illegal Hispanic immigrants to thank. Most studies estimate there are at least 11 million of them in this country right now.

To suggest that immigrants take American jobs that will never be replaced espouses Mercantilistic ideology, a school of thought most thought died centuries ago. Wealth is not finite; to demonize immigrants as thieves who steal American jobs is false. Immigrants necessitate the creation of higher income jobs: accountants, doctors, managers, and other illustrious professions to manage newly legalized workers.

Secondly, when Hispanic immigrants come to the U.S. they often take what we would consider “lower end jobs”, thus putting them in competition with the very lowest skilled and educated Americans. Immigrants, by taking these “low-end jobs” forces Americans to improve their market worth so they are competitive for upper tier jobs. Immigrants effectively push Americans into higher paying jobs that offer a better quality of life. This may seem counterintuitive but is confirmed by the shrinking African-American underclass in three important categories: poverty, income, and educational attainment.

The Cato authors all came to the same conclusion; current immigration law is detrimental to the American economy. Through complicated econometric simulations, Cato authors Peter Dixon and Maureen Rimmer concluded that legalizing more unskilled workers would result in a $180 billion gain to the American economy.

Bloomberg believed it in 2006:
Quote:

The economy of the country's largest city and the entire nation would collapse if illegal immigrants were deported en masse, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told a Senate committee hearing Wednesday.

New York City is home to more than 3 million immigrants, and a half-million of them came to this country illegally, Bloomberg testified.

"Although they broke the law by illegally crossing our borders ... our city's economy would be a shell of itself had they not, and it would collapse if they were deported," he said. "The same holds true for the nation."

It’s a stupid thing to say, and she said it stupidly. But it’s also what many experts believe. What happened to disliking PC with you guys? I seem to have heard a lot of screeching about how stupid being PC is, yet she says something many believe is true, and suddenly it’s not PC enough for you. Hypocrisy, meet thy maker.

Wrong answer, nor is it logistically possible - you could put ten times what they got on it, and someone clever could still walk a congo line of dancers and a fireworks truck through there in broad daylight.

My suggestion, and just for once, think it through.

Reform immigration, cut out the needless paperwork, if we can do an FFL/Employment background check so damned quickly, no reason that immigration should take any less than a single day, especially if the would be immigrant speaks passable english.

So, let em in, have em fill out the forms, issue a state ID, Social Security and Tax ID number, and to hell with that not payin taxes bit, if they wanna live here, they pay their share.

Now, here's the part you're gonna like - once that has been done, most of the "illegals" who really want to be here, and this is quite a number of em, wind up citizens and thus not only contributing to the economy, but also subject to our legal system without having to dodge through a lot of hoops.

AND, follow up with a short grace period for businesses to legally immigrate their employees without question or penalty, after which, drop the hammer on them and fine them heavily.

Oh yes, and once they have been immigrated ?
One way trip, bubba, even if you leave, you're STILL considered an american citizen with all the responsibilities and subject to criminal and financial penalty, so if you run back to mexico and run a cantina instead - you owe taxes on that shit, and the IRS *will* get it from you, one way or another.

Thing is, folks hear "immigration reform" and they keep thinking it's a free pass...

Nope, what we want is to make it possible for those who wish to become citizens to do so with a minimum of fuss or muss, allowing the resources allocated to cracking down on illegals to be applied for those who ARE bad actors, instead of having to be applied to a whole group of people, many of whom would do this correctly if only we made it reasonably possible to do so.

And no, as the system is currently, it's not reasonably possible - my Ex's new fiance, who to his confusion and consternation, I actually like...

Well, he's trying to immigrate here, and this has so far required a stack of six books the size of unix manuals and the services of two lawyers and a specialist just to keep the fucking paperwork straight, and HE is a friggin Canadian!

So we're dealing with a self-creating problem, the harder we make it to immigrate, the more illegals we're gonna have, most of whom have no harmful intent, but act as a smokescreen for those who do because we've made the system so byzantine it's near-pointless to play along with it.

And two final points, first is that immigrating them is way cheaper than locking up and deporting them (think of it as finders-keepers!).

The second is that once immigrated, if they pass the required background and security check, these folk would make excellent border patrol agents provided we vet for potential moles - cause they know the area so well, and a certain pride would be involved at that point.

So there's a reasonable, logical, solution.

Or, you could react about how I expect, and I will call you on it, mind.

That's what my commie sister says while she joins the protests in AZ today to support illegal aliens. As a lawyer she can't even hold a job as college professor because of illegal aliens, paid $5,000/year.

Her house was burgled 3 times by the illegal aliens she illegally hired to clean her tiny house. They know their place, and they know where to fence their loot.

Open borders for 100-million illegal aliens is as intelligent as leaving your front door wide open 24/7.

Libs are frakkin pod people.
