'I don't even get a call to check up,' Dollard resident Shama Chopra says

MONTREAL – It has been almost two weeks since Shama Chopra witnessed the failed attempt to blow up a plane en route to Detroit.

On Christmas Day, she handed water bottles to passengers who had jumped the would-be bomber, on fire after trying to detonate an explosive device. Chopra, 54, was sitting four rows from the Nigerian suspect and feels that she has a story to tell.

But so far, no security official from Canada or the U.S. has called to speak to the Dollard des Ormeaux resident about her harrowing experience, and she doesn't understand why.

"If I had died, I'm sure there would have been many statements (from Canadian officials)," said Chopra, who volunteers at the Hindu Mandir Temple in Dollard. "Now I survived, and I don't even get a call to check (how I'm doing)."

Chopra said she wants to tell U.S. investigators that airport security officials need to do a better job reading the body language of airline passengers. Before passing through security for Northwest Flight 253, she saw Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab with one hand on his waist and the other on his forehead.

"He was shaking his head several times," she recounted.

"I thought he was sick or something - why didn't anyone notice?"

She also said that passengers were questioned by security officials before passing through the security gate at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. Chopra wonders how Abdulmutallab was able to board the plane without raising any suspicions.

Cops Admit Planting 8 Bombs on 8 Innocent Airline Passengers, Arrest 8 Innocent Patsies

A quantity of explosive, found in a flat on Dorset Street in Dublin this morning, was brought into Ireland following a failed security operation in Slovakia.

The explosive was one of eight pieces of contraband planted by the authorities in the luggage of unsuspecting passengers at Bratislava Airport in Slovakia last weekend as part of a test of security procedures.

Seven were detected by airport security, but the eighth - 90g of research development explosive or RDX - was put in the luggage of a Slovakian electrician who lives and works in Dublin.

The 49-year-old unwittingly brought the material to Dublin when he returned from Christmas holidays.

Gardaí were eventually alerted this morning following a call from police in Bratislava and the flat on Dorset Street was sealed off.

During the operation, the adjoining homes and businesses were evacuated as the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit removed the explosive for further analysis.

Both Gardiner Street and Lower Dorset street were closed off for about an hour.

The Slovakian man was arrested at the scene, but gardaí are now satisfied that he is innocent and he was released from custody this afternoon. He will not face charges.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the Slovakian Minister for the Interior has conveyed his Government's profound regret for this incident to the Justice Minister Dermot Ahern.

Minister Ahern said he was very concerned about the fact that the gardaí were not alerted for three days and has asked for a full report.

Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has appointed Detective Chief Superintendent Martin McLaughlin to establish the full background to this incident.

The Slovakian Minister has told Minister Ahern that his government will cooperate fully with the Garda investigation.

A privacy group says the Transportation Security Administration is misleading the public with claims that full-body scanners at airports cannot store or send their graphic images.

The TSA specified in 2008 documents that the machines must have image storage and sending abilities, the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) said.

In the documents, obtained by the privacy group and provided to CNN, the TSA specifies that the body scanners it purchases must have the ability to store and send images when in "test mode."

That requirement leaves open the possibility the machines -- which can see beneath people's clothing -- can be abused by TSA insiders and hacked by outsiders, said EPIC Executive Director Marc Rotenberg.

EPIC, a public-interest group focused on privacy and civil rights, obtained the technical specifications and vendor contracts through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.

The written requirements also appear to contradict numerous assurances the TSA has given the public about the machines' privacy protections.

"The machines have zero storage capability," the TSA Web site says.

A TSA video assures passengers "the system has no way to save, transmit or print the image."

"There is no way for someone in the airport environment to put the machine into the test mode," the official said, adding that test mode can be enabled only in TSA test facilities. But the official declined to say whether activating test mode requires additional hardware, software or simply additional knowledge of how the machines operate.

In a video interview posted to You Tube yesterday, Southers states the the government and the TSA has to “pay attention” not to Muslim terrorists but to “anti-government, anti-abortion, survivalist types” who are “christian identity oriented,” before he links such individuals with neo-nazi white supremacists and people like Buford Furrow, a former Aryan Nations member who killed one and injured three during a shooting at the Los Angeles Jewish Community Center in August 1999.

Southers subsequently throws in Ben Smith, a spree killer who targeted members of racial and ethnic minorities in random drive-by shootings in Illinois and Indiana in July 1999.

“Those groups are groups that claim to be extremely anti-government and christian identity oriented,” added Southers.

As we have exhaustively documented for years, even if there were hordes of Muslim terrorists planning to bomb airliners, the federal government is far more concerned with what politically active conservative and libertarian Americans are up to.
