I think we're looking at this a little wrong. Someone has gone through the time, and effort to openly mock us in a way non star wars, star trek, comic book ect. fans make fun of fans of those things. That means something right? Like we've become noticable enough just like those other things so those with no imagination, and are sheep to main streem pop culture can try and make fun of us in a febal attempt to make themselves feel "cool". Personaly I take this as a sign that we've done something right. Plus I mean come on they also quoted Monty Pyton. Like 90% of the human race dosent have Holy Grail sitting on their shelf. They clearly can't think of too much on their own. These are the kinds of idiots who do everthing MTV tells them to. I still say we send them a buch of crapy e-mails anyway though. You know just to show that we care.

They obviously wanna bag Serenity, but what i noticed is that they quoted a line that wasn't in any adverts. So they obviously saw Serenity at least once. So they bag us out all they like. They obviously helped contribute to sales figures.

That particular comic has made fun of, well, just about everything, in the span of years that it's been online.

Perhaps some of us Browncoats are taking a fairly absurdist comic a little too much to heart.

Or perhaps I'm completely off my gourd and we're secretly the most hated fangroup in the 'verse.

I don't think there's a most hated fan group in the 'verse. Least non that I can think of. Even Trekkies can be somewhat cuddly at times. (Sorry Trekkies)

I am not so upset over the quote, it's the 3/5ths comment that bugs me a bit. Then again, guys who write comics like these, don't have girlfriends that aren't either digital or inflatable. They lash out because they want to be like us.

I'm secure in the fact that every Browncoat counts as 1.5 people (some as 2 or more!) and if their "comic" had 1/10th the fanbase Joss does, I'd be amazed.

Actually, I have to agree with posters like TCM...the comic's funny.

The only part that kinda irks me is the "Joss Whedon fans are only considered 3/5 a person" and that's becuase I remember some of my American History (even though I am rutting Canuck) which deal with how slaves were treated before the Civil War. And even that's a rather interesting tie-in to Firefly/Serenity cuz of the Civil War/post-Civil War undertones of both the series and the movie.

Since it seems to be the subject of various message board discussions around the internet today, I reckon I should clarify the jokes about SERENITY and Joss Whedon in today's strip. I am a Joss Whedon fan, as is Owen. However, I also think it is tons of fun to inexplicably badmouth something that everyone 'versally loves.

Just thought i'd add it in case ppl were thinking of flaming these guys.

Most folk won't understand the 1800's Census reference, and those that do, will see that as equivalent to the "N"-word.

It is one thing to make fun, it is another thing entirely to be derogatory. I reckon most folk see this as the latter.

Just my take on it. I saw it for what it was, but seeing it the way people en masse do, can't say it is all sorts o' pleasin'.

I agree about the negativity of the "3/5ths" comment. I do not believe that the artists was trying to be clever (referencing the comparison of 1800 U.S. Civil War to the Civil war of Firefly/Serenity) as much as he finds the fact acceptable (and even humorous) that your value as a citizen can be diminished based on race. Basically, the artist is blatently using History as simile, and making a direct comparison between Whedon fans and "Niggers" (with full derogatory implication applied).

Only a Civiil war/Civil rights history buff whoul know about one of the crucial but little known precursors to the Civil War..the House of Representations/U.s.Bank taxation issue surrounding the House of Representatives. Southern States wanted male adult slaves counted as state occupants, giving Southern States more manpower in the House. the 3/5 clause would diminish the southern House inflence while Northerners could be satisfied they had reduced the representational influence of slave states, while forcing them to assume a tax burden for African bondage.

The south was not happy with its' increased tax by the U.S. Bank...it eventually lead to the Civil War.

I instantly did not find this comic funny or appropriate.
