Serenity DVD Cover - Tweaked Again...
Thursday, November 17, 2005

Was finally able to get back and put some more time into my alt Serenity DVD cover design. Thanks to everyone who posted so enthusiastically before on the previous versions... the whole point was to make a DVD cover we fans would really dig, and one that stood a good chance of attracting the potential new Serenity/Firefly fans... and all your great feedback was a good indication that the sought after effect was achieved. Took some comments into account, also researched what a genuine Universal DVD back looks like, so's I could make mine look all real and stuff. Well here she be... fresh, homemade Serenity DVD cover, hot off the hard drive... mmmmmm... Yer Art Companion, 11th Hour

Still love it, but still think River's arm looks awkward. I wonder what it would look like without the arm at all, just her looking up?

i don't think i like how the cover spills over on to the side. i like a clean side, because that's how i (and i think most people) store their dvds, so you just see the side. maybe i'm just insane.

but that aside, very good cover. i like it better than the real one.

oh, and 11th hour is an awesome song.

Great cover! What kind of paper do you suggest printing it on to get that.. well, that cover feel?

WOW ok much better then the official one. but i also think either you should put the gun back in or just put river looking up at serenity. But still i think when i purchase my copy of the DVD i will also replace the crappy (yes i think the one they are useing for the actual DVD is crappy) cover with you nice cover!

honestly? I have no further suggestions for the back. couldn't have done better myself. I like how you took the same border that you put on the front around Miranda. it's not entirely obvious, but it's nice to bring consistent elements from the front to the back.

one tiny thing (no, not River's arm and hand, I like those), someone had mentioned about a previous version. might be good to have Serenity facing upward, not crashing into Mal's head. I know she crashes pretty hard in the movie, but she pulls herself back together.

overall though, even better than the last version :)

The back does work better now. To be honest, I didn't really put a whole lot of time into the first one. I mainly wanted to add a back so that it would all look like a real wrap around DVD cover... just somethin' to attach to the front. Then folks started sayin' they wanted to print this out for real and use it, so then it became more important to make an authentic looking back cover.

Good catch on the viewscreen. Yes it is the same that's on the front. The one on the front is mostly covered, so I wasn't expecting that anyone would make the connection.

I understand about the Serenity upside down/gonna crash thing, but I like the peril that is presented in the (relative to the position of the lower main elements) upside down position. Plus, she's out in space where there isn't really any up or down, and since there isn't any "ground" that's nearby, she doesn't really seem to be crashing... just doing a backflip! And, for me, I don't read Serenity as crashing into Mal's head... she's way too far away.

Actually, having Serenity look in so much danger can be a good selling point. I designed this cover both for fans, and to get the interest of new people. They'll look at Serenity and wonder if that ship is gonna crash or not... things look very ominous. Then they'll HAVE to buy the DVD to find out!

Thanks for all the feedback and kind comments... genuinely appreciated.

Oh, btw everybody...

Just to double check on the arm position and pointing hand for River, I stood in front of a mirror to duplicate her exact position. Turns out that it is actually more of a natural position than I thought, she really doesn't have to rotate her arm to be pointing that way.

Her body position is turned three quarters away from the viewer, and when her arm is raised you would see that angle on her hand when she points.

Just FYI... but I am going to do a bit of fading so that the lower part of her arm is more behind Mal than in front of him. I think that will help.

I really like everything about this,
in fact I think I should print it out and cover the DVD box (when I finally get it) with this beautiful cover!

Well, that's certainly a heck of a lot classier than what we got.

And the "Joss Whedon film" rectangle is perfect if you ask me.

I knew someone would design a fix for the heinous DVD cover. Fireflyfans rock my world!

I had planned to cover it with a reduced color laser of the movie poster, but this is a much better custom solution.

Will you be posting a hi-res version when you're 100% happy with the design?

I bought multiple copies of the DVD for friends and family, and am so honoured to be able to swap the packaging BEFORE they unwrap them for Christmas.

Again, thank you!

I like the gap between the Joss Whedon box and the rest... :)

11th's Hi-Res Alt DVD Cover Now Available
Okay just so's I won't be tweakin' into the next year on this thing, finally got to a point with my alt Serenity DVD cover where I can say it's fit fer downloadin'. There's a new Serenity ship (bigger, brighter, bolder, but still upside down), River's seen a lot of revising, and there's been some general cleaning and brightening of the background to avoid the "muddies" when it prints. (Dark, complex areas look cool onscreen, but can print like yuck on a lot of printers... hence the clean-up.) A link to the hi-res image file can be found on my Firefly/Serenity alt cover web page: http://srt.art.home.att.net Have fun! Yer Art Companion, 11th Hour
