CHAPTER 3

I don't know how to write the way Badger talks, You'll have to add the accent youself.

FRANKIE & JAYNE:

“Dinner, Kaylee? You want us to all go out for Dinner?” “Yep, that’s what I want for my birthday.” She smiled at the Captain. “A dress-up dinner.” “Sounds like a wonderful idea, Mei Mei.” Inara gave her a hug. “Is one of the safest towns we been to in awhile, Sir.” Zoë smiled back at Kaylee. “Shouldn’t be any problem.” She thought for a moment. “How dressed-up?” “Dressy as you can.” She jumped up, kissed her Captain and skipped away. “How long before we land?” Inara asked “Four or five hours.” Mal watched Kaylee leave. “Why?” “Want to make sure we have time to alter Kaylee’s dress.” Inara smiled at Mal as she followed Zoë out. “So, who’s your date going to be?” Mal asked. Inara tried to keep a straight face as she turned back to Mal. “Date?” “Well, there’s Zoë and Wash, Kaylee and Simon. That leaves Shepard, Jayne or me.” “Well, how about you pick.” Inara smiled back. “OK, how about I take Frankie, you take Book and Jayne takes River?” “Not sure the Shepard would want to go with a Companion.” Inara sat back down. “Or if River should be that near Jayne.” “OK, how about I take River, you take Jayne and Frankie goes with Book.” “You want me to go on a date with Jayne?” Inara could hardly keep form laughing. “OK, how about I take you, River takes Book and Frankie goes with Jayne.” “Sounds like the only good combination. How much of a date is this?” “Just seating and eating.” “Sounds like any other night, how are you going to make it special for Kaylee?” “We’ll all be ‘Dressed-up’. I better go find my tight pants, Kaylee likes them.” He headed up to his bunk. Inara watched him leave. “Don’t we all.” *** “What are they doing in there?” Wash looked at the rest of the men. “They’ve been in there for hours, I’m getting hungry.” “Me too.” Jayne leaned on the mule as they waited for the women to come out of Inara shuttle. He stood up when the door opened and Zoë came thru in a slinky dark brown dress. “Hot damn!” “Hey, I’m the only one that gets to say that.” Wash walked to the stairs and held his hand out to his wife as she came down. At first, she just stared at the offered hand, ready to make a remark about not needing any help and then she looked at his face and saw it wasn’t about her needing help. It was about her needing him. She gave him the smile she usually saved for the bedroom. “Thank you, Wash.” She took his arm and they walked down the ramp. Every one turned at the sound of River coming down the stairs. Book walked up and extended his hand, River smiled at him and floated down the stairs. Frankie was next and she came out in a loose fitting dress. Nothing Inara had really fit her, but they had tried their best. She looked at Jayne and smiled. He stood there, opened mouth and stared at her. Mal nudged him and he slowly walked over and extended his hand. He knew he had to be careful, if Mal every found out about them, he would kick Jayne off the ship, or worse. He tried to be very nonchalant about her being so near, smelling so good, was all he could do to keep his hands off her. Inara came out next, looking radiant as usual, but she had toned down a bit to allow Kaylee to shine and shine she did. The women had spent the last few hours modifying Kaylee’s pink dress into something that really showed off that, despite the grease, she was a very feminine girl. Simon and Mal walked up the stairs, Mal reached Kaylee first and just like a proud father, he kissed her cheek and handed her off to Simon. He then turned his attentions to Inara, He bowed deeply and extended his arm. They decided to walk to the restaurant, as the night was clear and dry. When they reached the outskirts of town, they walked up onto the boardwalk and window-shopped. Soon they saw the restaurant, on the other side of the street, the other side of a very muddy, wet street. They stopped and stared, they looked back the way they had come and tried to decide how far back they would have to go. Mal was tired and hungry, he looked at Inara and swept her up into his arms. “Well, here we go. You squirm and I will drop you.” “Mal!” She held on for fear that he would just for spite. Book quietly picked River up and headed over. Kaylee looked at Simon, he shrugged and bent to pick her up. He barely got straitened when he started to wobble. Jayne was there to catch her. “Wouldn’t do for the birthday girl to get all muddy.” He started across the street, he turned to tell Frankie that he would be right back, but she had already removed her shoes and she and Zoë had started to walk over, holding their dresses up with one hand and on to Wash with the other. That left Simon, alone on the wrong side of the street. He watched the others and had seen how deep the mud really was. “Come on Simon, its just mud.” Jayne yelled over as he set Kaylee down. Zoë and Frankie washed their feet off in the horse trough. “It’s not that deep Simon.” Zoë looked at Wash and rolled her eyes. Jayne handed Frankie his coat to help her dry her legs. “Jayne, go get him.” “I ain’t carrying him over, hell Frankie didn’t need to be carried.” “Jayne, please.” Kaylee smiled at him. “Aw, come on Kaylee. He’s a big boy, he can get a little muddy.” “Come on Jayne, he don’t get over here, we don’t eat.” Mal headed back over. “Jayne! I ain’t doing it by myself.” Jayne muttered under his breath until he reached the other side. “How you want to do this?” “Just grab his legs and I’ll take his arms and we’ll just drag him over.” Mal smiled at Jayne as Simon gasped at the thought. “Captain! Don’t you get him dirty!” Kaylee yelled from the other side. “Just hold hands and make a seat for him.” “Oh great, not bad enough that I gotta carry him, I gotta hold your hands to do it.” Jayne swore. “Come on Jayne, let’s get this over with.” He held out his hands and gestured for Jayne to grab them. “Ok Simon. Get on.” Simon closed his eyes at the humiliation of having these two men carrying him, but these were his last good, clean pair of shoes, his last clean link to another life. He would have gladly muddied them for Kaylee…. But…. He jumped up into their arms. “Thanks.” When they got half way there, Jayne stopped and Mal almost dropped Simon. “What the hell, Jayne?” “Got an itch on my nose, Mal.” Jayne winked behind Simons back. He let go with one hand and leisurely reached up and scratched his nose. Mal tried not to laugh, he knew how mad Kaylee would be if they dropped the good Doctor. A few steps later, Mal stopped. “Oh thanks Jayne, now my nose itches.” “Captain, we’ll be there in just a few steps, surely you can wait that long.” Simon increased his hold on the two men Mal winked back at Jayne. “Simon, could you scratch my nose?” The Doctor looked at him in disbelief. “You want me to do what?” “Scratch my nose, on the left.” “Mal!” Inara was afraid of what was going on. “Kaylee is waiting.” She knew that nothing but the thought of Kaylee could stop those two. “Yeah, Ok.” The two headed over to the boardwalk and put Simon down, Kaylee ran over to him and asked if he was all right. “Hell Kaylee, we’re the ones that carried him over.” Mal glared at her until she reached up and kissed his cheek. “Thank you, Captain.” “What about me?” Jayne whined, not wanting to be left out. She moved over to where he stood and kissed him too. “Thank you, Jayne.” They entered the restaurant and found the table Inara had reserved for them, a large round table with curved padded benches on two sides. Jayne, Frankie, Book, Zoë and Wash sat on the side facing the door, the rest facing them. Kaylee couldn’t stop looking around at all the well-dressed people. After they ordered, they gave her their gifts. She squealed at the shawl Frankie gave, the tools Zoë and Wash gave, the perfume Simon and River gave, the Bible Book gave, the hair ribbons Inara gave, the little gun Jayne gave and the dinner the Captain was giving her. They had barely finished eating when Mal asked her for her first dance, soon everyone but Jayne and Frankie were dancing. After awhile Book took pity on her and asked her to dance. She told him she had never danced before and he said he would teach her. After Book taught her the basics, Mal and Simon danced with her, while Jayne sat and glared at them. It was while Simon danced with her that Mal saw a familiar face and walked over to discuss tomorrow’s pick-up. Afterwards he came back to talk to Zoë. Frankie and Kaylee were going to powder room and Mal decided now was the perfect time for Jayne to get his whoring out of the way. “Jayne!” Mal yelled over to the table where Jayne finished off every ones plate. “Expect you back before mornin’.” “Why? Where am I going?” He stopped eating and stood up. “Party starting to break up. Kaylee, Simon. Inara and I are going to stay a while longer, seem Kaylee wants to dance all night. Zoë and Wash already headed back and Book will take Frankie and River home. So you get the rest of the night off.” “Maybe I should go with Book, never know what’s around.” Jayne kept an eye out for Frankie. “I’m sure Book can keep the girls safe.” He looked Jayne in the eye. “Never knew you to be so reluctant to go whoring, something I should know about?” “No, no.” He stomped off to the bar and grabbed the first working girl he found and headed up the stairs, hoping to get there before Frankie came back. He didn’t make it.

FRANKIE & MICHAEL: She watched as he disappeared into a room, dragging the girl behind him. The pain in her stomach was almost debilitating and the tears that threatened would be her first in five years, since her family had died. She muttered something to Kaylee, turned and ran out of the restaurant, right into a man that was harassing an elderly woman. With out even thinking she grabbed the robber and pushed him off the boardwalk, she lost her balance and fell into the mud. At the sound of a buggy the man ran off, Frankie stood and tried to wipe the mud of Inara’s dress. “Are you alright?” Book ask when he saw her in the mud, he started to step off the boardwalk to help her. “Book, stay where you are, no sense in both of us getting muddy.” He stepped down. “Boots are already muddy, here take my hand.” The buggy stopped just short of them and a young man jumped out. “Nana, you Ok?” He ran over to the elderly women, took her into his arms and walked her over to the bench. “Yes Michael, I’m fine, that nice young girl saved me. Thank you Miss.” Her grandson looked at Frankie, covered in wet mud. “Thanks, fo help’ me Nana.” Book noticed the slight leer in the man’s eyes and looked at Frankie. He then realized that the wet mud had made her loose dress somewhat clingy. He took off his coat and handed it to her. “Oh Book, I don’t want to ruin your coat.” She took a step and realized she had lost Inara’s shoes. “Oh no, my shoes.” She knelt down and tried to find it in the mud, in tears she turned to Book. “I can’t find the shoes Inara loaned me.” “Mary Francis, please put my coat on and then I’ll help you look for your shoes.” He wrapped the coat around her and felt her tremble. He wondered why she was so upset, he knew Inara wouldn’t be upset. He helped her over to the boardwalk. Nana urged her grandson to help the girl, he walked her to the bench and then went to the buggy and got a blanket. River had gone back into the restaurant to hide from Michael. Mal took one looked at her face and ran out to the street. “What the hell is going on?” He looked at Book in the mud and over at Frankie being wrapped up in a blanket by a stranger. “Mary Francis interrupted a robbery by pushing the men into the mud, lost her balance and fell in after him. Now she can’t find Inara’s shoes.” Book straightened up and headed over to the boardwalk. “You Ok, Frankie?” Mal walked over to the threesome. “She part’ a your crew?” The young man straightened and faced the Captain. “Yes she is.” Mal stated, pointing at the older women. “This part of yours?” “This er’s me Nana.” He helped her standup. “Nana, this er’s Captain Reynolds.” “Nice to meet you.” The Captain kissed the woman’s hand. Badger offered to drive Mary Francis and Book back to the ship. Mal looked at him suspiciously and started to say something. Then he noticed that Badger wasn’t acting like Badger. “Think that’s a great idea.” He decided it had to do with his grandmother, this put Badger in a completely new category. Must be some good in a man that treated his grandmother with such respect “Oh, I don’t want to get your buggy all muddy.” Frankie smiled at the man. “You can sit up front with me, wrapped in the blanket. Side’s you ain’t got no shoes. Nana and the good Shepard can ride in the back.” He walked his Nana over to the buggy and helped her in, ushered Book in and then he and Mal helped Frankie up. Badger took the slow way to the landing field, wasn’t very often that he got to talk to a nice women. He told only the cleanest of stories and he really liked the sound of her laughter. He had noticed that she wasn’t very tall, not many that short were that well proportioned. He was sorry when they arrived at the ship. “Well, thanks again for help’ Nana.” He got down off the buggy, walked over to her side and helped her down. “It really wasn’t anything.” She started to hand over the blanket, but realized how muddy it was. “Can I get this back to you tomorrow? I need to wash it.” “It’s no problem, just the buggy blanket.” He reached for it. “I would like to return it clean.” She smiled at him again. That’s all it took, women, nice women, never smiled at Badger. He realized he would get to see her again if she was to return it. “Ok, I’ll see you tomorrow.” He tipped his hat at Book, got back onto the buggy and rode away.

MICHAEL & NANA:

“That’s the one.” Nana stated as soon as they moved away form the ship. “What?” Michael was thinking about Frankie and hadn’t really heard what she had said. “She’s the one.” Nana looked over at her grandson. “Given the look on your face, you feel the same way.” She laughed. “You woo her and bring her back here to live.” “Not sure about that Nana, Cap’ Reynolds and I don’t see eye to eye.” “Don’t he work for you? Sides, Mary Francis is the only one that has to like you. You bring her back here Michael, I want her as my Granddaughter.” “Yes, Nana.” Michael replied with a smile on his face.
