Damaged Goods Part 3

Prologue:

Malcolm Reynolds, owner and commander of the Firefly transport Serenity has been influenced by The youngest passenger aboard his boat, River. The younger Tam has ways of knowing things that both baffle and intrigue the folk aboard Serenity. Truth being that they are, at times, scared of the girl. Yet it’s a fear that hasn’t really given them reason for throwing the girl and her brother out. After all Simon is a very fine doctor, and Mal, despite his rugged composition still knows right from wrong. Still the girl is a mystery. As long as the doctor keeps his sister roped in, and if possibly her abilities can provide an advantage to the team of the little transport, then there is really no reason for the Captain to drop them off on the nearest colonized planet. Everyone aboard ship is there for a reason……does River give the crew of Serenity the edge?

Damaged Goods Part 3

Mal Reynolds, along with his pilot Wash on Serenity’s bridge, eyeballed the craft floating before them with suspicion. The ship was tiny……even smaller than Serenity by almost half.

“ Seems serine enough.” Wash spoke.

“Yeah, not to my liking.” Mal added not taking his view away from the vessel.

“ Ship’s scan shows that her communications are down. There’s no way for her to produce an outbound signal. Only way for someone to know she’s here is to bounce a signal off her and track it back to the vessel themselves.”

“ Advice from an old tracker Wash. You wanna find someone, use your eyes.” Mal spoke one of his favorite bits of testament.

“ Maybe a trap. Do a scan of the surrounding area. See if someone is about other than our friend here.” The Captain ordered.

“ Already done. Didn’t find anything bigger than a beach ball. There’s no one waiting to jump us. The ship seems to be alone and stranded. Just like River said.” Serenity’s pilot confirmed.

Mal hesitated a second. It had come to that moment. The moment he always found most difficult. Commitment, go in or stay out…..the Captain always felt better once the decision had been made. Mal always could function in extreme conditions. He could think and give commands that were usually the right ones. This is what made him a good captain, and why his team mostly followed his lead without question, well most of the time.

Mal retrieved the com from the overhead panel.

“ Crew, this is the Captain. We’re going to attempt a communication link-up…keep alert!” He returned his attention back to his pilot.

“ Wash, hook up the external com leads. Let’s talk with these people. See if anyone onboard is alive.

Wash hit the buttons. The exterior com leads attached themselves magnetically to the other ship’s hull. Wash gave the nod that all was done. Mal again gained the overhead com.

“ Ship to Ship, this is the Captain of a rescue vessel……anyone there in need of assistance?”

There was a long pause.

“ YEAH! I’M HERE!” An excited voice came over the connection.

“ Identify yourself!” Mal ordered.

“ Corporal Doriday, crewmember of the light transport Felix Ray. We’re in trouble sir! We need help!”

Wash did a quick cortex scan of the Felix Ray. His findings did match up with the vessel in front of Serenity.

“ What kind of trouble son!” Mal spoke over the connection.

“ I don’t know sir! The crew’s all unconscious! Communications are down! I don’t know what happened!” The fear in the young man’s voice was unmistakable. Either he was a very good actor or his life threatening predicament was undeniable.

“ We’re here to assist you son. Make ready the link hatch.” Mal ordered the Felix Ray crewman.

Mal switch the overhead com to Serenity communication only.

“ Zoe! You and Jayne get ready. Kaylee, get Simon and River in the port hideaway. Everyone else, be ready for anything!” Mal looked over at his pilot. “ Wash, make the link-up connection!”

********************************************************************************

Fifteen minutes later:

The door drew slowly aside while the crew of Serenity watched as a single individual came into their view. Mal, Zoe and Jayne all had their weapons drawn, aimed at gut level. A single crewman from the Felix Ray threw his hands up, his eyes becoming as wide as saucer plates.

“ Just me sir! I’m alone!”

The corridor he stood in showed a solid wall directly behind him. The passageway opened up unrestricted both right and left. The crew of Serenity couldn’t see much down either side. Mal motioned with his pistol for the crewman to move aside. This done Mal entered the passageway alone. He scanned the corridors left and right, both were empty. Mal relaxed a bit.

“ So, what’s going on here?” He questioned of the young corporal. Hands still raised the crewman answered.

“ I don’t know sir. I woke up from my bunk and everyone was out cold. They’re still alive, just unconscious. Communications are down, and I don’t know where we are. Thank God you came along.

“ You should be thanking River!” Mal was thinking.

“ Ok crewman Doriday, hands down!” Mal told the young fellow.

“ Number of crew aboard?” Mal continued his questioning.

“ Five sir, including myself!”

“ Cargo?”

“ Something in the vault. I haven’t the clearance the know that information.”

“ That’s alright son, we already know what it is.” Mal smiled. He motioned to Jayne.

“ Tie him up.”

The crewman looked confused. Mal decided there was no reason to keep crewman Doriday in the dark.

“ This isn’t only a rescue son…..” He paused, “It’s also a robbery.” Mal smiled.

The Captain of Serenity found the rest of the crew of the Felix Ray, all living, and tied them up. Then they were locked inside a rear cabin for safekeeping.

Mal had Jayne escort Corporal Doriday back to his bunk and chamber him inside. At some point when Serenity’s crew made their exit, it would be rigged so that Doriday could escape and free the others. Mal and his crew were here for theft, not murder.

*************************************************************************************

Jayne joined Mal and Zoe on the bridge of the Alliance ship.

“Ok the deed is done, now where’s the treasure?”

“ Ain’t found it yet.” Mal informed the big mercenary.

“ Can’t be too hard to find. Just look for a big vault!” Jayne’s statement of the obvious was ignored by both the Captain and Zoe.

“ The ship’s manifest shows that they were transporting something, something important. Just doesn’t say what.” Zoe applied.

It wasn’t until they examined an upper level hallway that they found a door secured against access. Combination dial right on front.

“ Well, we haven’t any time to waste on getting this open. If the Felix Ray has been out of communication awhile there might be search parties already on their way. Jayne get the acetylenee torch. Time to open up this baby up and see what’s inside.”

“ Sure thing Mal!”

All three Serenity crewmembers had wide grins on their faces. The Captain called behind the big merc.

“ Remember we’re on a time crunch here…… !”

The Captain’s words stopped abruptly. There stood River. Opposite end of the hallway.

“ River?”

“ No need for the blow torch Captain. I can get you in.” The young Tam informed him.

Mal whispered to Zoe. “ Remind me to have a talk with our young mechanic when we’re through. She was supposed to be keeping an eye on the girl.”

The young Tam went to the combination-dial and In a matter of seconds there was a “click” and the lock was free.

Jayne, Zoe and Mal all grinned in anticipation. The door opened and there………on a low lying bed sat a surprise that none of then were expecting. A young girl, younger than River even, and wearing a charcoal-cartridge respirator pulled tightly across her face. Even through the mask the crew could see a big grin develop across the child’s face. She ran to the young Miss Tam and hugged her deeply.

“ WHAT THA HELL IS THIS! WHERE’S THE TREASURE??!!” Jayne exclaimed.

“ Right here.” River said still holding the girl.

“”””””””””””””””””” Mal! Something just showed up on radar. If you’ve got the treasure, you’d better get it on board quick!! “”””””””””””””””””””””””””””””

Wash’s voice sounded with definite desperation.

BLUEEYEDBRIGADIER

Oh jeez...trust River to make use of her tricksy ways in order to get what I presume is a fellow Academy student rescued from the Alliance. Or an intended Academy student, anyway ;D

Still, awesome cliffie...though a few minutes with a beta reader would be a further improvement of a gem. I'd be happy to help out if you would like...

:D

It makes sense that the Academy would have had more than one "candidate" than River.

If you would like to have a beta reader, I'd be glad to volunteer.

BRUCEPLUTO

Good morning BlueEyedBrigadire & Greenka61

Thank you both for your comments and thank you both for you offer. I may do that. One of the things, for me, when I decide to post up fan-fiction is that I become impatient. I do have someone to pitch in and help with this at home (my spouse) but often times when I finish a story she may be busy or not home at the time. After a couple of quick read-throughs I just get eager and post the fic as is. Lots of times that’s when I catch several mistakes.

Anyway, thank you both again for your offer as beta readers. Could be a while before the next chapter is ready.

Now as for the story……

BEB, yeah….The young Tam did pull a fast one on Mal, and the crew of Serenity. Why? Knowing the captain, at least like I think I do, there would be no way he would have agreed to a rescue mission and certainly no way he would have risked Serenity for a deal as such. Still, River had her plans well thought out and she’s not finished yet, there’s more. I’m glad that you like the story so far and I hope to keep it interesting for you.

Greenka61, in my estimation there are dozens, maybe hundreds, or even as much as a couple thousand, academy students in the Joss verse. They could have similar or separate abilities, and at different levels. The powers that be aren’t shy about exploitation. Once it becomes apparent that someone can become useful ( including children/ get them while their young) there are no problems with nurturing them for use by the government. Fact is these folk actually scare the higher achy. What better way to stay in power than to keep future ousters under control. The unseen monsters are the ones we fear the most at times I think.

Just the way I see it.

Thanks for the feedback Browncoats…..see ya, ZBP

He’s a little nervous, but remembers the advice of the family physician that used to be his doctor on Shadow. “Just take a sugar pill with your medicine and things will be alright” least that’s what ‘ol Doc Jenkins used to say. Of course Mal ain’t on Shadow anymore….. And his mom didn’t used sugar pills, she used castor oil…. as a chaser for medicine. And for those who are familiar with castor oil…..all I can say is that you have to sit still and let things progress naturally……BPZ

Trouble for Nothing 1.0
Malcolm Reynolds, and his crew find themselves ordered to serve Serenity up for “Verse Travel Compliance”…… or rather, space worthiness inspection, and although there is no reason to be alarmed, having strangers examining his boat does make Mal feel a bit uneasy. This is also a bit of a hassle, but isn’t that what governments are for, to get in a man’s way?

For fic purposes, at this juncture Shepherd Book and Inara are both on their respective worlds. What remains of the crew of Serenity are Kaylee, Jayne, Zoe, Mal, and Simon & River as crew/passengers.

Polished Memories 2.0 - The Mission
Howdy Coats!! Been a while since I’ve been able to jot something down, but here goes. …Continuation of the “ Polished Memories” series, and more of what Mal remembers about the battle of Serenity Valley. We can see that the pain, and suffering, and casualties of war are chipping away at the Captain’s beliefs. Is Mal losing his soul? Only the Shepherd would know the soldier at this point, and maybe his Corporal, Zoe. Read on for clarification….

Polished Memories 1.0- Boot Camp
New approach at mixing things up a little. “Polished Memories” folk trying to sort through their emotions and feelings, and make themselves feel better. Doesn’t always work.

MIA chap5 Final-Clash of the Titans
More like Clash of the bed fleas or dust mites. But that can be a good thing. Being the small guys can keep you off the Alliance radar and have the old bloodhounds barking up the wrong tree. Petty crime can pay well enough, yet not have the Feds crawling up your backside…. Oh yeah, also, Mal & Zoe pick up the heat in this one. I’ll not say more. Maybe Wash does have a reason to be jealous? Hope you enjoy the final of “Missing in Action” BPZ
