Shiny! But why are there two characters? Is the idea of serenity conveyed by two words, or do these two always go together?

I guess I'm sorta asking what each one means, if anybody knows.

Oddly enough, I have 3 or 4 chops for Serenity, and none of them look like this one. The Serenity logo as seen on the side of the ship (and patch made for cast and crew) is not even close. Another has the first part, but a different second part. I wonder how many variations of Serenity there are?

I do know that "serenity" seems to be one of those philosophical terms or ideas important to the general Chinese state of being.
