The final day of the School year at the Alliance Academy, where a Groundbreaking professor gives the Alliance what they need, for purposes to be encountered. I'm sure two of the characters can be guessed before the end.

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 1019    RATING: 0    SERIES: FIREFLY

Disclaimer: Joss, Fox, Universal Owns the primary character and sub characters involved.

This is my take on their Origins.

"Belief; a simple, yet powerful word. This simple, two syllable term has made empires rise and fall. It's lacking can make an entire army run away, or drive a single individual to stand tall and strong, no matter how overwhelming the odds are against them."

The lecture hall was silent with the exception of the lesson being taught. Never had such a class ever been held in such rapture. This new professor was the latest in the Education program, and had been Highly recommended by the most Prominent of the Core planets.

"When we truly, deeply believe in what we are doing, in the cause we act for, in the meaning of our lives, in the purpose of our actions, we can accomplish Extraordinary feats. We must be mindful, though, for as we believe, we are equally responsible for that belief, and its ramifications. On Earth that Was, a General believed himself Unworthy of being a King of Nations. The King offering him the position believed him Fully worthy for that very reason. The King's son believed himself worthy to Rule in Succession. The King believed his son Unfit to rule for the Son's reason. The story ended with the General, enslaved by the Son who became King, helping the Masses learn to believe in themselves, and, in the process, showing that the Son's belief was not strong enough to rule."

His voice and delivery were nothing short of Hypnotic. No amount of Subliminal suggestion had proven nearly as effective as the new professor was. The students were drinking in every syllable of every word. Possibly, for the first time since the Beginning, a class would rise forth which could successfully bring the Unification which the Alliance felt necessary.

"Let us remember, then, that Belief is a solid concept. However, what form that belief takes is as fluid as every make and female throughout the stars. We each have our own individual belief, as no two of us ever come from the exact same beginnings, or upbringing. How we are born, and how we are raised, from the very first moment of our lives forever builds the basis of our belief. It is also as simple to share as the air we breathe, as our words and actions can share one's belief with another. Per haps not changing it, but enriching it, adding more depth with each new individual encountered."

The Mocha-skinned, ebony eyed professor continued on with articulate inflection. Hos hair neatly trimmed in the clean cut military fashion, yet, here in the lecture hall, he was relaxed, almost a father figure, a shepherd to the latest flock of students. One of whom, only five years old, but incredibly sharp of mind, spoke up:

"Is it ever possible for belief to be wrong?"

The boy's voice rolled forth with a distinctive accent. He had been watching and listening to the professor, and asked the question with the same Hypnotic tone the Professor had utilized. Much like the processor, he also bore a Mocha skinned complexion, though his was slightly darker. His ebony eyes, although attentive, seemed to lack the spark in the professor's eyes. The Professor had recognized such, and smiled on the boy with a paternal kindness.

"That, is a question best answered not only be ourselves, but also by our peers."

This part of the lecture, that question and answer, would have to later be edited out. Otherwise, the delivery all year had been perfect. This was simply an unusual moment, where the Professor had called all his classes together in one room, one last session to wish them all well for the year, until the next academic year began.

"With that, I do hope you have found the seed of belief that helps take root in your thoughts. With time, nurturing, knowledge, and wisdom, your belief will make you well and fully able to make Any world you go to a Better world."

Excellent. The lecture had ended without any hint of the question and answer. Every lesson had been recorded. it could then be sent to other training areas around the Alliance core worlds. The Professor of course would be Handsomely compensated. As though awakening from a dream, the chatter among the students began as they took up their data pads, and filed form the rows in the lecture hall, out into the sapphire early summer day. The Professor smiled as he watched them go. He had found it an Honor and Privilege to be their teacher this year. Hos parents would have been proud of him, as the lessons of Belief they had taught, he was now passing on to a new generation. Now, with the academic year coming to a close, he found himself having some free time to pursue a few beliefs of his own. He was not yet aware, though of how much free time he was soon to have.

One student, a young, raven haired female with striking green eyes and olive skin, waited until after the students had left, before descending the steps of the Auditorium, walking up to the Professor, and surprising him with a tight hug. This, of course, surprised the Professor at first, but then he remembered this girl had come from one of the outer planets when its terraforming had become unstable. She had been sent here by her family to help assure a better life for herself. They had perished during the year, and the Professor had watched her travel form trepidation and apprehension, to devastating sadness, and now, to cheerful hope.

"Well well, this is a pleasant way to end the academic year." the professor commented with his paternal smile.

The young girl smiled in return. "I just wanted a few moments to thank you. Your class helped me find the strength I needed. Thanks to you, I understand why my Parents sent me here."

"They made quite the sacrifice for you. Please, do not ever forget that." The Professor replied with his paternal demeanor.

"I won't forget. Thank you so much...." She said, before turning to ascend the stairs, then looking back over her shoulder, her eyes bearing an emerald sparkle...

"Have a good summer, Professor Booke."
