Chapter 25/25: Ending it...peacfully
His ship was even more lavishly furnished then the room she was in on the other ship. She imagined how his house on Bellerephon would be like- It probably would be better. She was told that it was really safe and had only once in connection to the Security breach during the Lasiter gun incident. She had to terminate the Security Chief. It was ok. He was due for retirement anyway.
It didn’t matter. It was going to be her tomb.
Within several hours, they made it planet-side and she admired what was her now new home. The house was expansive and lavishly furnished with antiques. There were lots of servants including several that would take care of her personal needs. West was whisked away on business and she was left alone. She sat in the library, alone, in the dark, ready to pounce on someone. She didn’t like the fact that this was going to be here life. As a matter of fact, life had a funny way of turning bright when you least expected it.
**
Days. It had been days. Then the days turned the weeks.
She looked at herself in the mirror and wanted to die. Her clothes were expensive and her makeup was layered on. She was numb.
Today was the wedding. And she had lost control again.
What scared her even more was the groom. It had been three weeks and he hadn’t even touched her. He was gentle and soothing when he spoke to her. Perhaps even, dare she though it, loving? She was confused beyond all measure.
Perhaps this was the life the life she always wanted. She sat there in her extravagant white gown and sulked. Just then she heard the wave screen beep.
She looked around the room. All the woman who were dressing her already excused themselves and West was nowhere in sight. Something about guests. And keeping decorum. She received a wave and she answered it. It was from Serenity- From River Tam.
“Maria, I don’t have much time to tell you this-signals breakin’,” River started. She sounded lucid and looked very grown up. Maria’s eye welled up with tears- she was proud of the girl “We have received your transmission, mei mei!” she smiled and continued: “And we have done everything in our power to find out who you were… It’s not easy… And we have no news- except for one rumor of you being a Amerindian – but that’s just a rumor…They wanted you to be a ghost and I guess they got their wish.. However, we did find out lots of things about the other victims. Most have normal and happy lives. Some are….” Her voice trailed off and then she resumed speaking, “Mal says you know what to do with them. Anyway, the wheels are in motion…look for a sign.” River leaned closer to the screen. “We have done the impossible and that makes us mighty…”
No mention of her life.
Maria understood the meaning
Time to act.
** The ceremony was wonderful. Everyone who was anyone from the Allied planets had shown up -Even Senator Julian and his obnoxious daughter. The daughter looked absolutely green with envy. Scorpion chuckled. She recognized Niska who was sitting with his fat babushka of a wife and he looked right through her. She glared right back and he broke eye contact. She could kill him in his sleep and probably will. Even the chairman was there with his wife- and he smiled at her. Probably because Lady Yoshida had disappeared into the black after their encounter. No one knew why.He probably thought that she had killed her. But Scorpion knew she wasn’t dead- Only waiting.
During the reception Captain McGovern came up to her and congratulated her. She was very happy to see him and embraced him. She could now say she knew one Alliance member that was generally friendly. He was truly a good man. She scanned the crowd of people for anyone she knew-mainly for Captain Reynolds and his crew. There was no one. Not even Inara was there. She felt so lonely. She saw Badger in the crowd but he scowled at her and then turned his attention to some companions he had brought with him.
The world was lost around her in a blur of festivities that lasted several hours. She had no control over her destiny. But she consented to it with an “I do.” Walking blindly around the party she felt in a daze. Her smile as fake as her commitment. Suddenly a striking redhead bumped her. She recognized the redhead from her execution and she felt something in her hand and a small note. She tucked it in her sleeve, stealthily. There were no words exchanged.
Everyone went home and then she was alone. Her “ladies in waiting” whisked her off to her bedroom to await her new husband.
She realized what it was. It was her wedding night. She dreaded this night above all nights.
Oh Jayne.
She stood in the bathroom, staring at herself in the mirror.
Her new husband was no where to be found. Work, perhaps, was on his mind. She was preparing herself for her deflowering… She wasn’t happy about this. As a matter of fact…she was petrified. But not because of the potential boring married sex- but because of what was up her sleeve.
Literally.
She undid her dress, which revealed a white corset and panties set. It came complete with garters and stockings. She put the note and what was in it in her corset and walked out of the bathroom
Her husband called from the other room:
“Darling!!!! There is champagne on the table…You should drink some!!!” he said. But she didn’t buy it. She took the Champagne and emptied the glass in one of the plants. She took out the vile that was hidden in her corset and poured a glass for him. She poured the vile into the champagne and the black liquid dissolved to nothing.
She joined him in his office and he absentmindedly took the flute of champagne from her hand.
“Come to bed,” she cooed in his ear. “It’s our wedding night bao-bei, I want to make you happy,” she said to him. He turned around and saw her and she grabbed him by the tie he was wearing and led him to the bedroom.
He drank the drink in one gulp.
She laid him on the bed and opened his shirt. She pulled down his pants and left his boxers on. She lavished kisses on his chest and listened to the beating of his heart. She heard his breathing speed, then slow and then finally stopped.
There was no struggle as he died.
She backed off and read the note.
Maria
Bitch owes me a favor. This will make it quick.
-Inara
She quickly ate the note and stepped out into the foyer where a servant was likely to hear.
And then screamed at the top of her lungs.
