Serra Reynolds, 12

Previously in Dirt-Kisser, Abe and Lolly thought 12-year-old Serra was too chicken to kiss their passenger, 13-year-old Kao Wen. Merciless teasing ensued.

Part 3

When Serra arrives at the breakfast table, Abe and Lolly resume their clucking. “Bi zui,” Serra snaps, grabbing a bowl of protein off the table and stomping out of the room. “What have you done to her?” Inara asks. “Found a limit to her bottomless courage,” Abe smiles, sharing a conspiratorial look with Lolly as he enjoys his breakfast. “You shouldn’t tease your sister,” Inara admonishes, though not very seriously. “Oh, because she’s so sweet to us all the time,” Lolly says, sarcastically. “We’re just giving her a dose of her own medicine,” Abe notes. “I’m sure Dad would agree with our prescription,” Lolly agrees. Inara rolls her eyes and sips her tea. “Just don’t be cruel.” “Yes, ma’am,” Abe grins.

Serra huffs down the stairs, seeking the solitude of the cargo hold, or at the least the comfort of Ally’s room. Instead, she finds Kao Wen bouncing a ball off the wall. She groans inwardly and sits down on the stairs, digging into her protein breakfast angrily, cursing her brother and cousins. The ball continues to rhythmically bounce against the wall. Halfway through, mid-bite, she makes a decision. Scared? she thinks, Scared my pi gu. She slams the bowl down, swallows her last bite, and takes the stairs two at a time. She snatches the ball before Wen can catch it again. “Hi?” Wen says, obviously confused and uncomfortable. “Hey,” Serra nods, bridling her courage again. “Want your ball back?” “Yes?” “Come get it.” Wen approaches, unnerved by this pretty, intimidating girl. As he reaches for the ball, Serra leans forward and pecks his lips chastely, quickly, before dropping the ball and backing up three steps. “Really? That’s it?” Wen blushes furiously, leaning to pick up his ball. “You kissed me.” “I just… thought it’d be something a little more interesting.” “Sorry?” Serra huffs. “Maybe we should try it again.” “Okay?” Serra hesitantly steps forward, moving more slowly to press her lips to Wen’s. “Aww, the Mei-Mei’s getting’ kissed!” “Aunt Kaylee!” Serra cries, horrified. “Zao gao,” Lolly grins from her mother’s side up on the catwalk. “Didn’t think you had it in you, Mei-Mei.” “Kissin’? Someone mention kissin’?” “Daddy, go away!” The crew gathers, making a ruckus, Lolly and Abe laughing hysterically at the mortified look on Serra’s face. “All of you, out!” Inara finally calls over the noise, descending the stairs imperiously. Calling over her shoulder, she adds, “Especially you, Mal. Go to the bridge.” “But ‘Nara… The boy was kissin’ my baby girl…” “Actually, it looked like Ser’ was doing most of the kissing,” Wash grins. “Out!” Inara repeats firmly. Her eyes shift to her son, who is leaning against Lolly giggling. “Mal, take your son with you.” Letting out a defeated sigh, Mal grabs Abe by his ear and yanks him towards the bridge. “Wen,” Inara starts more gently as she’s down with the children. “Why don’t you head to your quarters until the crew’s calmed down?” Thankful for the excuse, Kao Wen bolts for the passenger dorms. Inara lifts her skirt and sits down on the bottom step with her daughter, who has slumped there with her head in her hands. “How are you doing, Mei-Mei?” she asks softly in her ear, rubbing her back soothingly. Her only response is a long-suffering groan. “Oh, baby. It’s just a kiss.” “In front of everyone!” Serra exclaims, shaking her head. “And Abe and Lolly…” “Had no right to laugh like that. Renci de Fozu, Leila Lee was caught kissing Kacey in a locked shuttle.” A snort escapes Serra’s buried face, turning into a full giggle. She lifts her head up to look at her mama, her eyes twinkling. Inara brushes messy curls out of her daughter’s face. “That is way more embarrassing. And Abe was kissing that Riley girl back on ‘Sephone.” “Was he now?” Inara questions, raising an eyebrow before pressing a light kiss to the top of Serra’s head. “Yup. But I don’t see the big deal. It’s kinda boring.” Inara laughs warmly and brings Serra’s head to her shoulder. “Hey! I thought you said no laughing!” “Oh, baby, I’m not laughing at you, I promise. And you’ll think kissing is better when you’re older, and you meet a cute boy, or girl, and they make you smile and laugh and…” “Mama, no more mushy stuff, please.” “Fine, just the facts. Someday, you’ll have so many hormones swirling around…” “Mama!” Serra groans, closing off her ears. Inara grins. “Mei-Mei, no matter what your father says, it’s alright to kiss boys, or girls. Just come see me before you do anything else, okay?” “Wo de ma,” Serra says, horrified, standing up. “What do I need to do to end this conversation?” “Give me a kiss and go hide in one of those hiding places you think I don’t know about, while I go yell at your father and brother.” Serra sighs in relief and plants a warm kiss on her mother’s cheek before running off across the cargo bay. “Mama?” she pauses and calls. “Does Daddy know about my hideouts?” “No, I had Aunt River tell just me.” “Gorramn Reader,” Serra mutters under her breath, though apparently not low enough for Inara’s maternal supersenses to pick up. “Language, Serra!” “Du bui qi, Mama,” Serra grins over her shoulder before disappearing behind some crates. Watching her rapidly growing girl run off, Inara is thankful the girl doesn’t like kissing boys just yet. She’s fairly certain that when that time comes, they’re all in for quite a bit of trouble.

***

Three knocks on the door rouse Serra from her sulking. She cautiously came out of hiding an hour ago and found Lolly wisely spending the night in Kacey’s bed until Serra’s anger fades. “If you’re not Mama or Ally, I don’t want to talk to you.” The door opens, and she sees her father’s boots on the ladder rung. “Uh-uh. You’re not Ally or Mama. Turn right around.” “Hey, I know I don’t act it much, but I’m the parent, you’re the kid. I get to talk to my own little girl when I want.” “Daddy,” she huffs as he drops to the floor and leans against her bunk. “I’m not talking about it.” “Fine then, ‘won’t talk about it. ‘Just stand here ‘til you’re ready.” “Dad-dy. Mama already gave me the talk. Don’t waste your time.” “Serra Alleyne Reynolds, I am not moving until you talk to me.” “You’re in for a long night then,” Serra counters, crawling under her covers and rolling her back to him. Mal manages four minutes in the silence before he lets out a heavy sigh. “Alright, you won’t talk, I will.” “I’m trying to sleep.” “Hmm. Don’t care.” He can feel her eyes rolling even if he doesn’t see them. “Look, baby-mine. I know you’re growin’ up. Don’t like it, but I know it. Pretend I don’t, but I do. And I really don’t like you kissin’ boys, but I’m guessin’ that’s just the way of it. But a boy ever does anything more than kiss you and that boy…” “Or girl,” Serra interjects, flipping over. Mal freezes and scratches at his neck. “You trying to tell me something, Mei-Mei?” “Naw,” she says, mischievous grin in place, laying the accent on thick out of earshot of her mother and tutor, knowing it butters him up. “That’s just what Mama kept sayin’. I thought we’d keep it consistent.” Mal rolls his eyes. “You’re gonna be the death of me, baby-mine. I’m serious about that boy, or girl, killin’, though. Can’t help it. You’re mine.” “I can take care of myself,” the twelve-year-old counters, rolled over on her stomach and propped up on her elbows. She’s gotten serious, reverting back to her usual voice, barely accented and nearly perfectly Core. “I could beat up any boy I wanted. Anyone who tried to hurt me.” Mal reaches over the railing of her bed and tucks one of her unruly curls behind her ear. “Oh, I know, Mei-Mei. ‘Sides Aunt Zoe and Aunt River, you’re the scariest one on this boat. But some people can hurt you when you think they won’t. Kinda hurt ‘can’t be fixed by beating up some go se, and believe me, I’ve tried. I don’t wanna see your heart hurt by some stupid boy who’s not thinkin’ with his head. ‘Least not the right one.” “Alright, you’re mortifying me. Go away.” Mal laughs, leaning over to kiss Serra’s cheek. “You are such a gorramn brat.” “Language,” she lilts prettily, sticking her tongue out at the end. “So, uh, how long ‘til Bellerophon?” “Two days. I’m sure you can hide from Kao Wen until then. When are you gonna let Leila Lee back into her own bed?” “Thought I’d let her sweat it out a little. She and Bubba were being mean.” “Like you’re a real sweetheart to them all the time.” “Uh, yeah.” Mal snorts, secure in his knowledge that Serra won’t be kissing any more boys for awhile; probably because he plans on keeping an eagle eye on her planetside and not on taking any more teenage boy passengers. “Goodnight, baby-mine.” “’Night, Daddy. Love you.” “You, too, Mei-Mei.”
