DECISIONS
Thursday, February 22, 2007

Mal's Ma has taken over my brain. This is a little fic that I dashed off one day last week. Mal's Ma has to make some decisions now that she has a son to take care of. It is not betaed so all the mistakes are mine. Disclaimer: Margaret Reynolds is my character but Mal of course, even a baby one is Joss's.

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 2517    RATING: 9    SERIES: FIREFLY

Margaret Reynolds shifted the bundle of blankets in her arms. The protesting cry of a baby hit her ears as the bundle settled. The crying stopped as she gently cooed to her newborn son.

Well, one little crisis solved she thought as her son Malcolm finally went to sleep, but I’ve got bigger ones to think about. She tenderly put him in his crib next to her bed and tucked him under the blankets to keep out the cold.

'I’ve got to make some decisions. I didn’t think I’d be in this position a few weeks ago. I had a lovin' husband, a ranch on its way to being prosperous after a lot of hard work and a baby getting ready to be born.

I’m truly alone now. You’re lyin' there buried under the trees and I shot and killed a man I don't have any regrets about that but I miss you horribly.

We have a son. I wish you could see him Tom. He has a full head of hair and I already love to run my hand through it like I did yours. His hair's dark right now but I know that it will end up brown.

I named him Malcolm for my Pa like we talked about. Wish Pa could see him too. First Pa dying, then you.I'm having a hard time, losing both of you so close together but I gotta hang on for little Malcolm.

His eyes are blue, just like yours. I’m so glad about that. I can see you every time I look at his face, even if it’s scrunched up in a cry. And he cries a lot. Been around baby animals and other peoples babies all my life but havin' one of my own is quite a shock. You wouldn't believe the work it takes.

I was thinkin' about sellin' the ranch and moving back to town. Maybe startin' up Pa's store again but I just couldn't do it. This ranch is all I have left of you and all I have for Malcolm. I'm goin' to try to make a go of it. Don't know if it'll work but I'm going to make the effort. I promise you that he'll grow up strong and to love this ranch.

I haven’t had a wave from your folks since they sent the one tellin' me that they weren’t comin' to your funeral. I sorta expected it the way they treated us when we got married, but little Mal is their grandson. Don't know if they'll ever want to see him but I doubt it.”

Her son's whimpering broke Meg's reverie. She went, picked him up and walked him around a bit.

“Hi, there little Malcolm. You've got a lot to learn. A ranch is hard work and we have lots of things to do tomorrow. Runnin' a ranch is hard work.“

Aw damn...this was utterly heartwrenching, ncbrowncoat! So damn beautiful and sad at the same time when we get to see Mal's mother struggle with her feelings about losing both her father and her husband so close together, leaving her with only Mal for family since his grandparents have basically disowned Meg and Mal:(

Gotta say though...you nicked one of my Big Ideas for part of a story I've been working on. Can't say anything, since I haven't gotten anything significant written yet but...I am happy the idea got nicked by someone who worked with it so well:D

Beautifully done. As for the grandparents, if they couldn't even bother to go to their own son's funeral then Mal is better off without them. His mama sounds lovely and I could imagine this as part of the backstory. Ali D :~)

This is lovely, and I hope there will be more, telling about Mal's early - very early - years. Margaret sounds like just the kind of mother he would have had to instil that honour, to make him the kind of man who would do everything to protect his crew.

Thanks, for the comments. I tried to tie it into my 2 Christmas fics. This seems to be my genre, but I am attempting a little Mal/Inara one that is forthcoming sometime.

I figured that if Mal's grandparents didn't go to his parent's wedding, they wouldn't acknowledge him either. Makes it interesting that he has wealthy, Core relatives out in the 'verse somewhere.

BBE,you are more than welcome to write you own parentage story for Mal. I'd love to read it. It took a lot of convincing for me to actually post something. So just go ahead and do it.

Aww, that was lovely. You can begin to see where Mal came from, and where it was he learned to be so strong, and tough and loving, and that tragedy is something to deal with and move on from.

"Freedom"
Quick fic done at the request of a friend as a Christmas present. Enjoy!

Inara's Cold
Post-BDM Mal/Inara Ok, here it is. I did manage to put a little bit of snarkiness in it. You can't have Mal and Inara communicate without snarkiness.

The Crush
Mal/River Just a little fic I found on my laptop. I wrote it about 9-10 months ago and I don't think I posted it here. PG-13 for brief sexual thoughts on Mal's part.

All I want for Christmas is a Pony and a Plastic Rocket
I was getting a nostalgic as I reread some of my first fics and decided to repost the the first two since they concern the holiday season.

I also resisted the urge to rewrite them so here it is in all it's glory.

The Last Christmas Present
I was getting a nostalgic as I reread some of my first fics and decided to repost the the first two since they concern the holiday season.

I also had the inclination to go back and rewrite the fics but I resisted the temptation. So here it is, in all it's glory.

Veteran's Day
Just a scribble I quickly wrote down. Mal muses on Veteran's Day in the quiet of the night.

Cold
Well, here it is. An attempt at Mal and Inara post BDM, after Serenity has been fixed, but before their first job.

I've also wondered about Inara's background and I basically took Moreana's comment that being a Companion was a "family business" and let my mind construct a back story.

Many thanks to Phyrelight and Taimdala for the Beta workd

Apple Pie
I'm back! Many many thanks to Phyrelight who provided a quite a few suggestions and helped me take this little fic beyond just scribblings on a scrap of paper.

This takes place just after Heart of Gold but before Inara leaves the ship for the Training House.

Spring Fever
Another "Young Mal" story. This was just something that wouldn't get out of my head. It was warm and gorgeous today and this sort of wrote itself. As a result, it's unbetaed so all the mistakes are mine.

Dear Mal
This has been on my hard drive since Christmas but real life and my Mom's broken hip kept me from finishing it.

Thanks to MissWhatitis for the beta and a bit of inspiration when I thought I should trash this.
