A view of Mal from River. Set pretty much any time before the BDM

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 2546    RATING: 9    SERIES: FIREFLY

Sometimes if I listen very carefully I can hear Serenity in his head – each turn and tick and hum and creak of the engine, like it’s the beating of his heart.

I don’t have to listen very carefully at all to hear when Serenity Valley is in his head; I have to try harder to not hear. The shouts, the fear, the anger and loss – some nights I have the same dreams he does and when I wake up screaming Simon never understands why.

Simon doesn’t understand a lot of things; he thinks he does, but he’s wrong. He thinks that he can make me better with science, with his drugs and care and love, but I know that won’t work.

The captain understands; he doesn’t know he understands but he does.

I know why the captain watches me. He wants to see what Simon sees, wants to believe that I can be fixed - but he doesn’t.

He watches me to make sure that I’m not going to hurt anyone again. He didn’t care, not really, that I hurt Jayne (but if it had been anyone else…) but he did care that he wasn’t in control, didn’t see it coming. He doesn’t want to be caught off-guard again.

The captain knows that I’m broke, broke like a shattered glass. He knows that even though broken glass doesn’t mean to cut, the pieces are still sharp and can slice your hand open if you aren’t careful when you try to pick up each tiny little shard.

The captain’s careful. He won’t get cut, he won’t let anyone else get cut if he can stop it.

If he can stop me.

Simon doesn’t like the way the captain watches me. But Simon doesn’t see that the captain protects. Simon doesn’t understand that’s the captain’s heart, protection. Simon will make excuses for me if I hurt someone even if it’s Kaylee or Inara because Simon won’t see that nothing is helping

He doesn’t want to admit that maybe he can’t fix me.

The captain knows that I might always be broken. He calls me “little one” and smiles and teases me sometimes just like he’s brother-father-uncle, and yet. Yet. Yet.

There’s a dark in the back of his eyes that tells me he’ll stop me. If I threaten his Serenity, if I spin out into the black and can’t find a way home, he’ll stop me any way he needs to. He’ll be sorry, and he won’t want to do it, but he will, to keep everyone else safe.

Simon sees it too, that’s why he doesn’t trust the captain.

Simon can’t understand that’s why I do.

Awesome - I'm not so sure I have words to describe this but that was incredible insight to not only Mal but Simon as well. I love your metaphor with River and the broken glass.

And I think you have Mal's internal thought process down to a tee. It's all just great!

This is excellent, if a little creepy! I agree with TamSibling - that's exactly what Mal was thinking before the BDM.

Absolutely brilliant! Such a unique and incisive stream of consciousness and so accurate in its' perception. But then this is River and she *is* a genius. This is greatness, Ali D :~)

Oh yeah...this definitely explains the level of hostility between Mal and Simon at the start of the BDM: Simon's fear and anger at Mal for watching River like she's a bomb or a wild animal clashing with Mal's painful awareness that he'll the life of anyone who threatens him, his crew or Serenity...even a traumatized 17-year old girl:(

Brilliant stuff, Ankhagogo! Getting to see Lucid!River (if only in her head) is one sad thing (due to the time period this internal monologue is set). But seeing said thoughts as they contemplate how River trusts Mal BECAUSE he will end her if she pulls something potentially fatal again? Heartbreaking:(

I think that's the key to River, actually - letting your brain go where it will, whether it seems to make sense or not.
Thanks!

**But seeing said thoughts as they contemplate how River trusts Mal BECAUSE he will end her if she pulls something potentially fatal again? Heartbreaking**
I really think it would be deeply comforting for River to know that Mal will take her out if he has to. She knows she lacks control, and she probably has worried, lots, that she'll seriously hurt someone who's a friend. Knowing Mal's mind would just be...relieving, I think. A little stress off of her unbelievably pressured mind. But certainly a tragic relief.

Thanks!
