Love Never Wanted Me

A short little ficlet inspired by 'XO' by Fall Out Boy. I'd say more, but it's way too short...just read it...

To the love, I left my conscience pressed Between the pages of the Bible in the drawer

Mal ran his hands over the small leather bound book that hand been sitting in the bottom of his trunk for years. The faded gold letters on the top tried to spell out ‘Holy Bible’ but by now, they just looked like blemishes on the perfect black leather.

Shepard Book had seen the loneliness that had surrounded Mal and had mentioned how the divine has a way or something like that. Mal hadn’t really paid attention. God talk always bored him and as of late, all of it seemed out of reach.

All he could think about was her. Inara...

Even if he wasn’t really thinking about her, she always dwelled in his mind. He missed her, but he could never admit it.

He took a long sigh and rubbed his eyes. “Love never wanted me...”

Mal gripped his fingers on the Bible and tossed it against the wall. As the pages fluttered open as it hit the floor, he leaned back and muttered, "What did it ever do for me?"

This is yet another reason why I consider Mal my evil twin.

Excellent work - I don't care about the length. It's very truthsome and very Mal, and it really hits home for me as well.

Wow...excellent post-series/pre-BDM ficlet! Loved the barely annonciated - but highly prevalent - emotions from Mal concerning Inara;)

it's amazing how much angst you can pack into a few sentence - both mal/inara and mal/god angst. Great job - can we see an expansion of this?
