The Train Job - Revisited
Tuesday, September 7, 2004

I'm sitting here watching the episode again, and there comes a point where I say...." hey, wait just a minute". While I'm sure many smarter folk than I figured this out LONG ago, it just dawned on me. Duh.

The plan was simple. Mal and Zoe get aboard the train, work their way back to the 5th car, find the cargo, lower Jayne down onto the train for some thrilling heroics , and as Kaylee puts it... " we bundle up the booty, and haul'em all back up." Simple. Only 1 small problem. Why leave the door to the luggage car cracked open and rigged w/ a smoke screen canister if you're not planning to go back out that way? Doors that are left open generaly signal something is a miss. If an Fed comes back and sees the door closed... no big deal - it's a closed door to a luggage car. If he see's it cracked open and can hear a ruckus going on inside.... that's a clue that something's up. Here's an idea. Close the door and THEN rig it w/ the smoke screen canister!

Now, I understand some minor flaws in the story line are sometimes needed to advance the rest of the story. Before B,C,and D occur, A must happen. And granted, per the commentary, this is the ep that they had to write over just 1 WEEKEND and have it ready by the time the suits come in Monday morning. So, I guess I could cut them SOME slack. I mean, why quibble about such small things as that when a better question would be..how'd they clean Crow out from the engine intake before they left the world ? Blech!

NRKANGEL

Here's a reason why they might have done that in real life, but wouldn't be necessary to do on the show (because it would require too much explaining). On a lot of these types of storage locations, the door is locked from the outside. Closing it would lock you in and prevent you from using it as a backup escape route. Of course, they could always stack up a few boxes and escape through the open roof...

ROUTIER

Good point.

Possibly it was an escape route. Other things could have gone wrong. Serenity could have failed to make the rendezvous, the winch could have failed, Jayne could have fallen off the train & got injured etc.
