On costuming...
Friday, February 29, 2008

I'm seriously hoping I'll be able to make it to D*C this year in Atlanta, and I'm thinking about wearing a costume for at least one of those days. Though, I don't know what to wear. I have several options:

Zoe/browncoat
I found a long khaki trench coat at Target the other day that's pretty close to Zoe's, and I know where I can find some dark brown pants that I can tailor to be knee length so they won't bunch up in the tall black boots that I've had for a while. (Yup, those boots are made for walkin'! ) And, I also have an olive-drab dress shirt. All I'd have to do is make a vest and buy a gun belt, holster, and fake mare's leg (or other gun). However, Atlanta in August is guaranteed some of the most miserably hot weather known to man (those of you who are laughing at this have never known a summer in the South), so I may not want to wear a costume with that much gear.

Kaylee
I have a top that is embroidered with an Indian design and a pair of olive-drab capris (as oppose to the jumpsuit). I do own a Japanese robe, but it's black with pink peacocks. A moody Kaylee? Maybe.

Inara
I have this black skirt with a lot of nice lace work at the hem. All I'd need to do is get a top that would be Inara-ish. My best bet would be making one myself. However, my sewing skills aren't that good. Though, I do have six months to get it right. And it would be really nice to wear a skirt there. Hmm...

River
Pfft! That ain't gonna happen! I've spent the past seven years being poked and prodded by doctors in RL, been on all sorts of prescription drugs that has made a couple of heroine addicts jealous, and categorizing my days into "good" and "bad". Portraying a character whose schizophrenia was manufactured in a lab sounds less like a day of fun and more like digging up repressed memories.

Firefly/Serenity t-shirt
Let's face it. I've been meaning to order one from CafePress.com. (TenthCrewMember, I'm talkin' to you! ) Despite the above options, I will wear one on one of the three con days. If I can make it. *crosses fingers*

Anyways, any opinions?

STEAMER

Sounds like Zoe is your best bet, since you have most everything for it. If you try to cosplay anyone else it can get pretty expensive not only trying to buy the rest of your costume items, but conveying them all to your dressing room. I have a fake mare's leg you might maybe make use of. ;)

SARIS!! Why didn't I think of that?? They shouldn't be that hard to sew. Basically, they're big rectangles of cloth, and I can custom size it b/c I'm so short. Thanks, stinkingrose!

NCBROWNCOAT

I'm tall and fit the Zoe body type best and I've assembled most of a Zoe costume myself.

Brown and khaki stretch pants from WalMart of all places. They are so comfy that I've bought them in several colors and they go good with my brown boots.

This Halloween I bought a kids rifle from one of the costume stores and fashioned a holster out of cardboard and brown leather like vinyl fabric paired with a Zoe like belt from Target.

Zoe's necklace is from Jetflair's jewelry collection and I'm looking for the right vest and top.

I most likely won't wear it at Dragon Con though. I'm a resident of the South and knoe about the heat! Just my Firefly/Serenity/KNTR tshirts.

SISTER

Hi PhyreLight. This summer will be my third visit to D*C and I will be marching with the 76th in Saturday's parade there. Honestly, I understand your concern about the heat/humidity but most of the con takes place inside air-conditioned hotels so the only time you have to be in the heat is darting between the three venues so wear whatever you want! Actually the only time I wore the full costume was for the parade and my volunteer stint at the SEBC's table and I was not uncomfortable at all! My friend wore a River costume which was basically a slip dress and big black boots and she was very cool and comfortable the whole time. Lots of us in the 76th also just wore jeans and Firefly or Serenity tees as well. Hope to see you there in whatever you choose.
