Buffy / Tolkien crossover thought I had. Willow and Tara
Tuesday, September 5, 2006

I'm in S4 of my discovery of the Buffy 'verse, so what I say now is subject to change. This entire premise is founded on the events in J.R.R. Tolkien's world as being a prerequisite to 'our' world in which Buffy and the Scoobs inhabitted. The Quendi( Elves) have, of course, all gone. But we know that there were times when men and elves mingled together, and produced offspring. (Beren and Luthien, Aragorn and Arwen ) As time marched on, and the Quendi left our world, there remained faint traces of their decendents through out human history. Such qualities which made the Quendi unique were greatly thinned out, but not entirely.

Now, those who know their Tolkien ( I'm far from being an expert, keep in mind ) remember that the Quendi didn't understand what men meant by the meaning of the word 'magic'. To the Quendi, it was nothing more unique than the grass being green or being able to breathe. In other words, it was innate to their very being. And definatly NOT a kin to Harry Potter's world, where witches and warlocks were sent to boarding schools to learn their magic.

So, I got to thinking. Tara, when Willow meets her, is a meek, shy young thing who longs to do more w/ her magic. But while she's not had anyone to practice REAL magic with, she seems to have caught on to a great deal all on her own. Willow, on the other hand, has grown from a meek, shy version of her younger self, and is more confident. Willow's backgrond in science and quest for knowledge has helped lead her to magic. She sees the application of her earlier skills as a 'logical' progression into the next realm.

And so they find each other. Tara, more 'aware' of her own powers if still unsure about them, and Willow, more adept at learning while showing more confidence, are drawn together by forces they can't fully explain.

The more I saw Tara, a thought crept up and gave me an idea. She might have some Elvish in her. Her warm demeanor, the light in her eyes and her fair complexion reminded me of the Elf queen, Galadriel. And it wouldn't be just any Elf, but she had to be from the lineage of those who saw the lights of the mingling of the two trees, Telperion and Laurelin, the Silver and the Gold Trees that brought light to the Land of the Valar in ancient times. Those who saw this light were called the Calaquendi.

And then I thought " What of Willow ?". Sure, she's 'good' at magic, but it doesn't seem to come as natural as with Tara. And while she's definatly fair to look at, Willow does have a darkness about her. ( despite those big, warm, dark eyes of hers.) Though it's not an evil darkness, but more a lacking of light. Those who never saw the mingled lights of Telperion and Laurelin were called the Dark Elves, or Moriquendi. The Moriquendi never did heed the beckoning to return to lands in the West, and never made it back to Valinor until long after the two trees had died.

So, to sum up, Tara and Willow were both long lost decendents of the Peredhil , or Half Eleven. Tara most likely of the Caraquendi, Willow a Moriquendi. From there, it's not hard to imagine the attraction both Tara and Willow felt for each other. Beyond the superficial, each seemed to have a faint echo of those who left us long before. Both Willow and Tara longed to find peace with each other after having been seperated for ages beyond count.

Thanks Blue. :) Ever since I saw ( on some website, I can't recall which ) star wars, star trek , Firefly etc.. all combined into one coherent timeline and explained that way, I've toyed w/ such ideas. Just a whimsical view of things I enjoy , I suppose. Like how Ian McKellen's characters Gandalf and Magneto could have some ancient connection. Which would be REALLY tough, since there's no hint of any Istari ( Wizards ) ever having offspring. Oh well, some ideas are more thought out than others.

While I doubt Joss had any thoughts on Tolkien's works when creating these two characters or helping to plot out their relationship...this is definitely a mucho brilliant concept you've come up with, AURaptor:D

You (or an author you like/trust) should take this out for a literary spin;)
