One fan's lament - The Firefly that was.
Tuesday, February 8, 2005

I suppose it has finally struck home. Some 234 days out from the premier.... and despite everything that's been said, or what I've heard, etc... reading bits and pieces of spoilers has made me come to the conclusion that our quaint lil Firefly show really is gone - for good. And I miss it. Sure, the ship and her crew will be on the big screen come next Fall, but it won't be the same. Seems so many of the little things that set Firefly apart will be white washed and pushed aside.

It's not a question of whether or not I'll go SEE the BDM. And I'll probably like it ... I hope I do. But I can't help but think about what would have happened to our BDH's in the series and how things are now irrevocably altered . Sure this or that might have very well played out as it does in the movie, but it would have taken time. Charachters would have moved on in one fashion or another, but I sense that things in the movie are now greatly hastened. And losing that part of the story is tough to take, even if we get to see a little more ..before the end.

" Yeah, but were it not for the movie, we'd NEVER see 'em fly again.... ". I know, I know. It's just that it won't be the same. Not in some ways, it won't. I'm sure we'll see flashes of this or that which will *seem* familar.....but as for Black Market Beagals, Shan U, Stupid hats and ...well, that 'special hell'. Too many to count.

I know....can't please anyone if you try to please everyone.

....still, glad I got those DVDs

Trust Joss. This is not Firefly anymore. This is Serenity. It is the same but it is not the same.

I have no doubt that the film will hit home with most fans. Even though it is slightly more pure sci-fi than the genre-mixing Firefly was. I believe that it will be a great part of the 'verse.

[I want to reassure you without dropping any spoilers.

I saw Serenity last night in London. It's all it should be and more. Yes, Mal is darker, but way funnier. There's enough Chinese swearing and rural talk too - I love those bits as well.

I know we'll always regret the loss of many, many episodes, but trust Joss with this film. He doesn't let us down.]

Thanks Anonymous. I was thinking today of YoSafBridge and the ongoing story that played off from Our Mrs Reyolds and Trash, as well as HoG. Then I realized that Joss had his idea of telling this story all along, and the suits at FOX first urged him to fudge w/ some of his own concepts, then killed it outright. Still, what we got was awesome. I have to remind myself w/ what Jewel said at DragonCon, and that was to " trust Joss". Naturally, part of me, a bit cynical, hears this and understands...Jewel is an actress who is promoting herself via the movie, and one would naturally expect she'd say what ever is needed to get more folks to buy tickets,etc... Then I a ray of rationality and think... Just who was it that came up w/ this Firefly thing in the 1st place - DUH! And then I proceed to feeling silly that I've wasted so much time fretting over a movie...a MOVIE! (normal folks would end the sentence right there, oh well)... that isn't coming out for another 8 months. Ugh.

BDM stands for "Big Damn Movie" & BDH for "Big Damn Heroes".

Hi Anonymous

BDH=Big Damn Heroes, is a line from Safe (I think, sure someone will correct me if necessary) where as they are rescuing River and Simon from the Stake, Mal asks "what does that make us?" and Zoe replies "Big Damn Heroes sir".

And BDM=Bid Damn Movie...which is a fan term following BDH.

Oh, don't start with LOTR lines, makin' me feel all futile and depressed...seriusly, though, I understand what you're saying. Seems to be the time for worry to start, after wanting something for so long. But I will say this, let's learn a lesson from other fans who have waited for other movies, and take all 'spoilers' with a grain of salt, or better yet, not at all.
I want to hear this story from Joss Whedon, not some stranger in a post. We cannot judge anything from that, even if the info is genuine. I mean, just think of how hard it is to tell people about Firefly, how dorky it can sound coming from you, but let Joss show it to you, and wow! Best Show Ever.
All I am saying, is give Joss a chance...

Thanks DitB

I'll do what ever I can to draw as man folks in to see the movie as possible, bank on that. I guess the main thing that gets to me is that we'll be seeing out BDHs, but not as they were. I have no problem seeing a 'darker' Mal, but I'll miss the folksy, rural talk, the swearing in Chinese, and likely any BlueSun refernces. I know these things aren't what MAKE Firefly, not by a long shot. But they did help set the characters and the show apart, imo. If I'm to believe the whispers/ spoilers.... much of what once was, is lost. (Sorry, had to snag a line from LOTR )

if you help to make the BDM a success, there will be more BDMs, and Joss will have more free reign to make them as spectacular as the series. hopefully.

things are always different between movies and TV, but different doesn't have to mean worse. the first film will be more main-streamed (is that a real term?), but the next two shouldn't be.
