It is. To be drafted is a huge deal. Few free agents make the teams, though it does happen. Usually lower round draftees get cut, but may be re-signed on as practice squad members, as I understand. Being a good or even great player in college doesn't automatically translate to being drafted in the NFL.
But what a huge moment in this young man's life.

From ESPN-
PROS: His versatility is very real and he has the ability to stop the run and rush the passer. He has average arm size, but uses every inch well and can shed blocks. He is able to stunt and get good penetration, despite his lack of speed and size because he uses his hands well. He is a vicious tackler, who is quite talented at getting stops, and is a serious wall against the run game. He has a frame to add weight.
CONS: Sam is relatively undersized at the pro level. He is also not incredibly quick. His motor is up-and-down and there seems to be times where he gets tired. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

He wasn't the first draftee to cry when he got the word he was selected, but he was the first to engage in PDA w/ another man.
Trivial side note: Some of the 'brothahs ' aren't just upset that Sam has come out, but that he's dating ... wait for it ... a WHITE man! gasp!
Same sort of complaint that many black women say when they see a fine black man w/ a white woman... " What, no sistah is good enough for him ? "

As terrible a President as he was, you have to admit he was a good-looking man. A lot of folks drool over Sarah Palin. Can't fault no one for whom they find attractive, but YOU translate your hots for Ronnie into the fantasy that he was a 'great leader.' You need to think more with your northern head, dude.

Not sure which is more sad, your attempt to belittle my views on a great President as nothing but mere 'gayness', ( which apparently in YOUR world is something derogatory and negative ) or the sheer idiocy of your political views.
Seems to be a toss up.

It seems YOU have a problem with people thinking you're gay, but it certainly didn't sound like Chris had a problem with it. He said it explains your infatuation with Reagan, which it kinda does.

Where ? Right here. Implying a 'calculated misdirect' , where there was none, and then trying to belittle straight men, by suggesting they're gay.
Chris's intended put down is itself the gay bashing so many here accuse conservatives of being guilty.

Michael Sam is getting the Lindsay Lohan treatment ... as in, the openly gay football player is getting his own reality show on Oprah's TV network ... reps at OWN confirm.
The show -- produced by the same people who did Lindsay's show -- will chronicle Sam's journey into the NFL ... and we're told Sam has already been taping the show for weeks.
In fact, we're told Oprah's crew was in the room when Sam learned he had been drafted by the St. Louis Rams ... and clearly knew his big celebratory kiss with his BF would make for great reality television.
Oprah issued a statement saying, "We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever."
Unclear when the series is set to debut -- or how the Rams feel about the situation.

and as expected, tongues are starting to wag as to the background of Michael's boyfriend, who has quite his own history himself.
Quote:
Michael Sam's boyfriend Vito Cammisano comes from line of Midwest mobsters
The hunky 23-year-old is the grandson of the late Mafia boss William (Willie the Rat) Cammisano — who reportedly got his name for the way he disposed of bodies — and the son of Gerlarmo (Jerry) Cammisano, 60, who followed in the family's shady business and ended up doing prison time for running a Kansas City-based gambling ring, according to records.
BY BILL HUTCHINSON NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Monday, May 12, 2014, 5:36 PM
The main squeeze of openly gay NFL player Michael Sam comes from a family of Midwest mobsters.
Vito Cammisano, the hunky 23-year-old former collegiate swimmer, is the grandson of the late Mafia boss William (Willie the Rat) Cammisano.
His father, Gerlarmo (Jerry) Cammisano, 60, followed in the family’s shady business and ended up doing 14 months in prison for running a Kansas City-based gambling ring, according to records.
But on Saturday the Cammisano name became part of a feel-good sports story of the year when Sam became the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team as Vito proudly stood at his side.
After breaking down in tears when he got the news that his dreams were realized, Sam hugged and kissed Cammisano on the lips as ESPN’s cameras were rolling.

OWN calls off Michael Sam series
The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and Michael Sam's representation announced Friday night that the documentary series that was set to feature the first openly gay NFL player has been postponed.
"After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams, 'The Untitled Michael Sam Project' has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dreams of making the team," OWN president Erik Logan said in a statement. "OWN is about elevating and empowering people to achieve their best. It's clear that we, along with the world, recognize the opportunity that Michael has in this moment. We will continue to support him in his journey to earn a spot playing for the Rams."

Mike likes him some big D.
IRVING, Texas -- When Michael Sam was released last weekend by the St. Louis Rams, he was sure another opportunity, if not with the Rams, would come.
When his phone didn't ring over the weekend, there was some surprise a dominant college pass-rusher couldn't get a bite with another NFL team. It all changed Wednesday morning when Sam passed a physical and joined the Dallas Cowboys' 10-man practice squad.
"It was a little longer than I expected," said Sam, who is trying to become the first openly gay player to participate in an NFL regular-season game. "But you know what, I'm here now, and that's all that matters."
The Cowboys downplayed Sam's arrival, saying the objective is to play against the San Francisco 49ers in the season opener Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium.

Having not followed the Cowboys, best I can tell is that they didn't need him. When he was brought on, it was likely more of a PR stunt, and not out of any real need. Since then, Dallas has gone from an also ran to having a legit season. The 'side show' of having Sam around is no longer required.

That's pretty harsh and calculatingly cold. There really hasn't been a 'side show' with Sam except that the Cowboys are winning and in first place. Surely Jerry Jones would never be so deceitful and duplicitous to Michael Sam.

It is now. Well, at least his career is done.
MONTREAL (AP) — Michael Sam is stepping away from pro football.
Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL, has told the CFL's Montreal Alouettes that he is leaving the team. He tweeted Friday that "The last 12 months have been very difficult for me, to the point where I became concerned with my mental health. Because of this I am going to step away from the game at this time."
He did not play in Montreal's game against Edmonton on Thursday night, citing a sore back. He made his CFL debut the previous week.
Sam was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Rams, did not make the team, and spent some time on the Cowboys' practice squad before being released.
