He was looking for a shorter trade route to India. What documents are left from that time show he was petitioning the Spanish Crown for ships saying he wanted to give the crown and shorter route. And they already knew about the West Indies, so he figured that sailing west over the Atlantic would be about a 3,000 mile journey to India proper. |
