Philip B. Gaines announces the completion of an independent multimedia commentary project, "Firefly: A Special Feature", a DVD based on the FOX television series created by Joss Whedon. A free examination copy of the project is available for those willing to provide feedback about this media experiment. "Firefly: A Special Feature" is a 3.5 hour multi-module review of Whedon's innovative space western series.

I looked at his website - the dude is doing it as his MASTER'S project. Man, does my master's project suck, big time.

I've got a copy, but haven't gotten very far into it. The packaging is good, not flashy, and the accompanying materials are well-written.

Well, I'm all right. - Mal

I'm still waiting for the region 2 version of FOX's DVDs to be released, but in the meanwhile I have a copy of Philip's amazing commentary DVD set (which he sent all the way to South Africa, gratis) to satisfy my Firefly fix. If anyone in the Cape Town area would like to borrow it, message me.

I've always wondered why DVDs still don't allow commentaries to send pause or fast forward commands - in Gary Ross's Pleasantville commentary he suggests viewers manually pause on a certain shot, so as to look at what he takes a while to explain. Not only does Philip pause and jump around, but he's also edited bits from other episodes into his episode commentaries.

His explanations of why he liked "Out of gas", but not "Shindig" so much, was something I'd sensed, but never consciously thought about before; but it's his commentaries on the early episodes that I really enjoyed since I only saw them once (I only started taping the episodes from "Jaynestown"). The video "essays" were my favourite part of the set.

It might seem a simple thing, but I have to mention that the menu interface is the best I've ever seen on any DVD: no hassle screens, no irritating and timeconsuming music or animations, and you've gotta love the "play all" button. I'm an sf fan so there has to be a nitpick right?: not sure if the resolution on TVs could handle it, but I'd have simplified the character comments menu into a 2d matrix, and Philip, when you release version 2 with "Trash", "The message", and "Heart of gold", how about white on black titles? Also, Die hard 2?!
