One of the things that for me makes this show so freakin good is the details. All the little details. In the dialogue, in the acting, in the plot points, in the visuals. The interactions between them when they're in a group. The offhand comment that's actually maybe a clue. The humorous moment that links parts of the story together. Every episode is loaded with them. It's like a good Simpsons episode- you have to go back and rewatch it 2 or 3 times to catch everything. It shows the kind of quality everyone involved is putting into the show.

I can't ******* believe more people are watching America's Funniest Home Videos than this show!!!

Okay, the pessimist in me doesn't find it hard to believe.

I completely agree on both points.
As for more people watching the home videos show that's easy to explain. Firefly is a fairly cerebral show. Most people are'nt into that. Most people don't want to think when they're in front of the box. Hence the popularity of Americas funniest home accidents or Everyone loves raymond.
Lowest common denominator comes to mind...
