BLACKOUTNIGHTS

Greetings. Why you clicked on this thread is beyond me, but welcome. First and foremost, w warning is appropriate — my coffee has not yet kicked in, so you may be subjugated at times to pointless thoughts and expressions from a mind that's somewhere between here and there (the World of Dreams).

Now that we got that out of the way, a little about moi. I get paid to write. "Why?" you ask. "Beats me," I respond. If I had to guess, I would say it's because I do a better than half-assed job at it and have some kind of related degree. Don't misunderstand, I'm not wealthy. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Not in this business. I'm just saying that writing and comunicating are my job. If I write a best-selling novel, I'll be sure to let you know. And if you've made it this far into the thread, you might even enjoy it.

FIREFLY
I missed the first episode when it aired. Though worried I would be behind on the characters, it turns out with the network's decision to not go with the pilot episode, I wasn't too far behind. Even had I missed it, I think the writers did a fine job making the show where you didn't have to see previous epidsodes to understand what was going on — but if you had seen them, you got a little something extra to your viewing experience.

I met Nathan, Jewel and Adam briefly at Dragoncon. They were polite and cordial. Good people. Good seminars. Even more surprising was the fan base. I knew it was big, but my God! Now, even other prominent genre gurus such as Harlan Ellison and Orson Scott Card have surfaced commenting on how goo the show/movie was/will be.

SERENITY
The idea of a movie from a TV show isn't new, but is rarely successful. About the closest I can think of as far as success are the Star Trek movies and The Fugitive.

Whether Cap'n and crew ride this horse into the wide blue yonder or go down in a blaze of glory remains to be seen. A few years ago, actually about a decade, I would have said, "No way." But I'm more optimistic. We've got a) Joss Whedon, who's got one hell of a good imagination. I can't wait to see his vision on this in September. b) A talented (and quite attractive) cast. I could go on and on about all of them, but the thing I like most is they are all so appreciative of our support. I don't know how long that will last, because us fans can be quite ah..hmmm....annoying at times. I can't even imagine what it's like to be adored by so many. That leads us to c) the fans. It's rare for something that's died to be brought back to life, and that's what all of you have done. In-freaking-credible.

I love the movie site too. The challenges are great. They even posted a Haiku I wrote about River as one of the better ones received. WOOT!

CONCLUSION
Hopefully now, I will be able to jot down my stories I HAVE to write today and not have too many rewrites afterward. I love my job, but it gets downright frustrating at times.

PEACE ALL

Insomniac writer...imagine that.

Thanks for the cogent analysis. Let's hope this Frankenmovie is the springboard for a Frankenseries. That picks up, say, four years later and starts with Mal saying, "So, anyway, like I was sayin'..."
