This will be a futurist thread, different to the AI fears in the other threads

Futurism or False Prophets?

A thread looking at Nuclear, a chat on the technological advancements and scientific breakthroughs, maybe to hypothesize the possible, a future chance, a probable, a next day scenario or preferable, or alternative future, this is not really a prediction thread but a discussion on ideas that will shape the future also Nano-Tech, 3-D Printing or AI Chatbots starting to look like people, general production with Robotics, advances in Genetics etc

'Cold Fusion' the Taboo Clean Energy Topic - Nuclear Fusion is now possible?

While we move forward we also enter an era of regression politics, at one time it was the Conservative Right banning stem cell funding now its also the Left. Anything with the word 'Nuclear' becomes trouble, Germany has started shutting down its last reactor power plants, it has asked its people to share hot water and will instead pollute its own air with coal to provide power.

We have lots of topics on Coal, Solar Panels, Traditional Nuclear Energy Fission Power nd the Bombs they make, Pollution, CO2, Oil etc

Very few topics on the hopeful potential of other Nuclear power for example 'Thorium' as an alternative or the possibility of Cold Fusion or Fusion Nuclear Power as seen in scifi movies.

It was a very fringe scifi idea but it becomes more real with each year and every passing month

A hybrid fission/fusion reactor could be the best way to get through the ice on Europa

This new method creates an energetic environment inside the lattice where individual atoms achieve equivalent fusion-level kinetic energies. This is accomplished by packing the lattices with deuterium at densities one billion times greater than in tokamak reactors, where a neutron source accelerates deuterium atoms (deuterons) to the point that they collide with neighboring deuterons, causing fusion reactions. For their experiments, Dr. Benyo and her colleagues exposed deuterons to a 2.9+MeV energetic X-ray beam, creating energetic neutrons and protons.

This process could allow for fast-fission reactions using lattices built from metals like depleted uranium, thorium, or erbium (Er68) in a molten lithium matrix. The team also observed the production of more energetic neutrons, indicating that boosted fusion reactions—aka. screened Oppenheimer-Phillips (O-P) nuclear stripping reactions—also occur in the process. According to Dr. Benyo, either fusion process is scalable and could be a pathway to a new type of nuclear-powered spacecraft:

From the same story: Several companies are already investing heavily in nuclear fusion, with Microsoft making the world’s first purchase agreement earlier this year.

The US tech giant made the deal with Helion Energy, which aims to set up a nuclear fusion power plant within the next five years despite the challenges remaining to make it commercially viable.

Helion chief executive David Kirtley said at the time: “We still have a lot of work to do, but we are confident in our ability to deliver the world’s first fusion power facility.”

In my opinion, this is bullshit until Helion Energy sells a few million dollars worth of electricity without blowing up their not-yet-even designed, let alone built, power plant. At the moment, Helion Energy is all hype and has no power plant. It is probably more likely somebody will be selling in five years an anti-gravity spaceship that gently floats to Mars without using rockets spewing flames.

I share SECOND'S scepticism on fusion (cold or otherwise). The only reason why fusion happens in our sun is bc immense gravitational forces jam hydrogen molecules together so tightly it overcomes the nuclei's natural repulsion.

Generating those kinds of forces takes a lot of energy. Until recently it took more energy than it released, which is why even a little positive energy release is such a milestone.

Same with solar panels: taking sand and melting it to make pure quartz uses up so much energy, the panels only became net positive ten or so years ago.

Wind? Not reliable.
Tidal force? Interrupts the natural cleansing process that keeps bays and estuaries from becoming septic.
Hydro power? Reduces fish spawning which kills whole riversful of salmon, over time.

There are no easy answers to our voracious appetite and need for power. Not wasting it is a good start.

PS: At one time I looked into the radioisotopes generated from the different isotopes of uranium and thorium, and at one point I found a decay chain that was relatively benign. I also looked up thorium reactors: in principle it sounds simple but in practice it requires the development of a material that can resist molten sodium and still pass neutrons, IIRC. Anyway, most of the DOE's focus on nuclear energy was recovering plutonium for bomb-making.

I went thru this already JAYNZE.

Stars manage to fuse hydrogen because their tremendous gravitational forces press hydrogen so closely togther it overcomes their nuclei's natural repulsion.

The only way yhat you can get that to happen artifically is to ram hydrogen molecules together at very high speed (ie very hot temperature) while being held tightly in a magnetic bottle.

And. so how do we generate all of this HEAT?

Well, using energy, of course! (Lasers, in the latest experiment)

Until very recently, it took MORE POWER to ram hydrogen molecules togther than they released when they fused. The only trick isn't getting hydrogen molecules to fuse, the trick is to get them to release more energy than the process demands.

Even a tiny amount of extra power coming out is a big breakthrough, and it was just repeated Jun 30, 2023 at Lawrence Livermore, https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/us-scientists-repeat-fusion-po
wer-breakthrough-ft-2023-08-06
/ but it was such a teeny-tiny bit of power it was hard to measure. Unless there's a huge leap in technology soon, practical development is a long ways away.

Unless, of course, you manage to corral a star's worth of hydrogen and have it generate enough gravity to ignite your own star?

And 'cold fusion' has never been repeated, altho many have tried.

I'm afraid fusion - cold or otherwise- is just 'magical thinking' and hopium.

Okay, to qualify my negative assessment on fusion - it's a technology that MIGHT solve our energy problems. I think we could be looking at 10-50 years in the future. 10 years if someone achieves an astonishing breakthrough in a year. 50 years if we keep going at the rate we've been going. Possibly never. It could be the problems are unsolvable.

But that's why I call it HOPIUM. You can't count on something to solve an immediate problem if that something doesn't exist/ isn't working, and you can't believe it will magically come into existence just bc you really really hope it will, or even desperately need it to. THAT'S magical thinking.

JAYNZE... again ... let me make clear... I'm not against fusion. I'd be surprised as shit but exceedingly happy if someone actually managed COLD fusion. All of the phsyics books would have to be rewritten!

And I don't even doubt that significant advances can be made by citizen scientists. I read an article about five who came up with unprecedented new theories... unfortunately I only remember the one about the woman in San Diego who was having her kitchen re-tiled who began wondering whether it was true that there were only a few kinds of mathematical 'spaces' that could be mapped with five colors. Too bad I don't remember the rest.

What I object to is the belief/hope that a breakthrough will occur BECAUSE it's 'simple'. Or BECAUSE we need it. Or BECAUSE it was discovered by a non-scientist/ child/ housewife. That the ONLY thing holding us back is fear, or hidebound thinking, or commercial interests. What that leads to is the belief that if we 'believe' something hard enough, it will happen. 'Peter Pan' thinking.

Wouldn't that be nice if it were true?

I'm on insulin to live for the rest of my life. If the system ever falls apart and we go to Mad Max world, I'm essentially dead after my stockpile runs out.

I suppose if they can infect everyone with auto-immune diseases that just make everyone who doesn't outright die dependent on them to survive then Cold Fusion is a thing that could happen. Why keep destroying the environment to power the cars and keep the houses warm if you can subjugate everyone by less environmentally impactful means?

Should their absence cause production to stop? Insulin could still be made.

Now imagine that on a society-wide scale.

Just bc they've managed to position themselves on the carotid of the economy doesn't mean they're necessary for a system. Things would work fine.... even better... without them.

Okay. But we'll never be able to test that theory.

There's a reason why they're feminizing men and taking away everyone's gun rights around the world.

They've got all the power and resources. What's worse, is that they've figured out a way to take just a little bit more just a little bit at a time so the creep is so slow that nobody even realizes that they're just slaves to the system.

There will be no revolution. Not when there's Netflix to binge on.

These Bacteria Eat Plastic Waste—and Then Transform It Into Useful Products
https://singularityhub.com/2023/09/29/these-bacteria-eat-plastic-waste
-and-then-transform-it-into-useful-products
/

The first time I heard about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, I thought it was a bad joke.

My incredulity soon turned to horror when I realized it’s real. The garbage patch, also known as the Pacific trash vortex, is a massive collection of debris in the North Pacific Ocean. Although made up of all sorts of human-generated waste, the main components are tiny pieces of microplastic.

From straws to trash bags, we use an astonishing amount of plastic—which often ends up in delicate ocean (and other) ecosystems. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, a nonprofit organization for protecting endangered species based in Arizona, at current rates plastic is set to outweigh all fish in the ocean by 2050.

A new study wants to turn the tide with synthetic biology. By engineering genetic circuits into a bacterial “consortium,” the team reprogrammed two strains to not only destroy polluting plastics—but to also transform the toxic waste into useful biodegradable material. Environmentally friendly and versatile, these upcycled plastics can be used to manufacture foams, adhesives, or even nylon—all without further taxing the environment.

The strategy isn’t just limited to the polyethylene terephthalate (PET)—one of the most common types of plastics—tested in the study, said the authors. “The underlying concept and strategies are potentially applicable…to other types of plastics” and could begin lighting the way toward “a sustainable bioeconomy.”
A Natural Plastic Predator

Plastic helped build modern society. Made of molecular chains called polymers, it’s malleable, versatile, and economical to produce in mass. It’s also notoriously difficult to break down.

To Dr. James Collins at MIT, synthetic biology can help us avoid turning the planet into a plastic wasteland. Pioneers in the engineering of synthetic gene circuits, study authors Collins and bioengineer Dr. Ting Lu at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign reasoned that genetically engineered bacteria could tackle the plastic conundrum head-on.

Although toxic to most organisms, plastic is an energy source to certain types of bacteria and fungi. Found in soil, the ocean, and even the guts of animals, these bacteria use specialized enzymes to break down different types of plastic. Enzymes are proteins that trigger or speed up biological processes—helping us digest a hefty meal, for example, or converting food into energy.

Unfortunately, these natural strains are sensitive to temperature and acidity and can often only digest plastic that’s already damaged by UV light or chemicals. Even strains that can break down PET plastics require weeks or months to do so, and can only handle small volumes.

One of these days they may make fusion practical.

I did at one time look rather deeply into the isdues involving thorium reactors. I don't recall everything I read, but the upshot is that barring an unforeseen technological advance, thorium reactors are a significant MATERIAL SCIENCE challenge.
The issue, as I recall, is that thorium reactors work as molten salt reactors. You need a material that can withstand molten salt AND pass neutrons. AFAIK that doesn't exist, yet.

But that's the problem with technology that's simple IN PRINICIPLE: quite often there are knotty complications that need to be ironed out.

*****

Take EVs, for example. I love the theoretical simplicity of having a battery run an electric motor. And regenerative braking? GENIUS! So aside from the electricity generation, grid, and battery complications, it sounds like a great concept.

Until I saw a video of a guy who actually REPAIRS EVs for a living! It's not like fixing your old electric drill. Oh no! The battery, for example, requires both a heater AND a cooler, bc it won't start if cold and burns up if hot. Ok, so you need a heater to warm the battery.
Where do you get the heat from? Turns put you need a second battery - standard lead acid as I recall.
Much simpler overall to have a small engine charge a battery and run the car off that.

*****

They say there are three stages of technology. The first is the simple one, when a principle is first discovered. The second is complicated, when all kinds of corrections and tweaks are applied to the tech. The third is simplified, again, when the tech is truly understood and refined. Not sure if all tech goes that way, but right now we seem to be in a bit of a swamp with our energy tech, all at the complicated stage..

JAYNZE, I thought you would appreciate this. I would change "magic" to " mystery" tho.

THE STAGNATION OF SCIENCE AND THE DEATH OF MAGIC

Authored by Gaius Baltar ( http://gaiusbaltar.substack.com)

Many of us have the feeling that the world is empty and sterile. There are no mysteries anymore, or magic. Many of us have a deep need for mystery and magic as demonstrated by the popularity of such books, TV shows and movies. We retreat into a more exciting and meaningful world of fiction to escape the grey and mechanistic reality which increasingly seems to be sucking our life force out of our bodies. We are told by all the experts and scientists that this is a normal state of affairs. They say we live in an age of reason; in enlightened societies where science has triumphed. We finally understand how the world works they say. When they say “we” they are obviously talking about themselves, not us. We just have to take their word for it.

Many people don’t feel this way at all. They bask in the enlightenment of our culture and seek the truth in the scientific consensus. They feel that we have moved into the light from a barbaric past, populated by stupid and brutish people. They focus on their lives and the self-affirming feedback they get on social media, and leave the thinking to the experts. There are no problems they say, and the world is far from being empty and sterile. There is no need for meaning in an enlightened world.

If you are one of the poor bastards in group one, you are lucky. You may be unhappy and unsatisfied with your life, but at least you are alive. The other group is dead, without realizing it. They are to be pitied.

Perhaps you want even more than just mystery, magic and meaning. Perhaps you also have a passion for the truth and true knowledge and understanding of the world. That’s level 10 weirdness and you better not tell people about it. They might react badly and your social media account might get cancelled. You have gone from being just a malcontent to being a threat.

Now, here is the funny thing: If we were to assume that the human race is on a journey to discover the full nature and meaning of the universe and reality in general, how far have we come? A scientist may tell you that we are at 70% or 80%. An exceptionally delusional scientist might even say 90%. They are wrong. We are perhaps at 5%, or maybe just at 1%. Why do I say that? Well, let’s take a few examples of what we don’t know.

Our entire civilization is based on electricity – but we don’t know what electricity is or how it really works
We don’t know what light is
We don’t know what frequency of light actually is
We don’t know what magnetism is
We don’t know why the Earth has a magnetic field – or why the Moon and Mars have one
We don’t know how memories are stored in the brain
We don’t know what consciousness is
We don’t know how atoms are structured
We don’t know what gravity is
We don’t know how life started
We don’t know how big the universe is
We don’t know why the universe is structured like a central nervous system

I could go on and on. Most people don’t realize that we don’t know this, or how little we understand about even the most basic phenomena. Many scientists will pretend to understand some of these things – because they equate theories with knowledge. We have theories about most of these things – but in reality we don’t understand any of them. The truth is that we understand almost nothing about the nature of the universe and the nature of reality. Perhaps the 1% guess is more realistic than the 5% one. Believing we understand 70% or more is outright delusional. In fact, hiding how little we know seems to be the single most important goal of modern science.

Modern science truly does hide its ignorance. Theories are presented as facts and phenomena we don’t understand are explained by giving them names. Let’s take the standard model of particle physics as an example. It deals with three of the four fundamental forces that hold the universe and everything in it together: electromagnetism, the weak nuclear force and the strong nuclear force. The fourth one is gravity. We don’t understand any of those four forces. We have no idea what they are. They are the modern equivalent of the classical elements: earth, water, air and fire. But it’s progress – at least we now know that atoms and subatomic particles exist.

Why is it so important for modern science to hide its ignorance? To explain that let’s be generous and assume that our knowledge is at 5%. If we accept that as a reasonable approximation, it has a rather spectacular logical consequence: If we think we understand 70% of everything and have theories about it, but we actually only understand 5% – then only about 7% of mainstream theories are correct. If we understand less than 5%, then the percentage of correct theories drops toward zero. This means that most or all mainstream scientific models and theories are logically wrong and the only way of having a chance of being right is to be in disagreement with mainstream science. This is a simplification on my part but you get the point.

Theories to scientists are like honey to bees. They can’t live without them. They get no research money without them, no respect or adulation from their peers or from the plebs, and no (unwarranted) feelings of self-worth. It is a matter of life or death for them to hide how little they understand and how wrong their theories are. It’s not just physicists who do this – every single scientific discipline does this. You simply cannot admit you don’t understand basic things if you want respect and status. You are forced to lie to get them. This is what is fueling the incredible stagnation we see in western science. It is basically dishonesty, hubris, money and social status.

Fake theories and fake concepts are not the only methods mainstream scientists use to hide the real situation. They promote the abolition of curiosity by defining everything outside their control as “fringe science” and unworthy subjects – even though everything should be a potential subject matter of science. They camouflage their theories in extreme complexity and verbosity to prevent the uninitiated from understanding how bad they are. They turn every scientific endeavor into a gray and soulless wasteland, void of passion. They say that we understand almost everything to discourage the rebellious and the curious. They make publishing research papers the end goal of science rather than understanding and knowledge. They make science as uninteresting, uninspiring and boring as they can – the absolute reverse of what science actually is.

The stagnation of basic science is truly incredible. Little has happened in theoretical/basic science in the last 50 years and almost nothing in the last 20 years. Only applied science has made progress – i.e. science based on instruments as well as practical applications of (mostly old) science. The main driver of science in the last 50 years has been the improvement of scientific instruments driven by technological advances. The basic science behind all of it is mostly stuck. Now this stagnation has started to retard technological advancement, particularly in the West. This is obvious to anyone who has taken a close look at the situation.

Now, let’s go back to social status. In the last 20-30 years scientists and the “expert class” have elevated their social status to the level of priests in the ancient world. Scientists and experts are indeed the priesthood of the modern world and their priestly oracle-like status depends on pretending to know and understand things. They suppress and ridicule anyone outside the priesthood and they have turned themselves into Guardians of the Mysteries – much like ancient priests did. No one should even try to muscle in on their turf, or else…

This development has had a knock-on effect. Because the priestly status of scientists and experts depends on lies and subterfuge, they have automatically compromised themselves. Liars can easily be bought to lie some more, and that is exactly what has happened. Instead of only making up theories and concepts as ersatz for true knowledge, they have started to create completely fictional sciences on behalf of businesses and social engineers with deep pockets. Entire scientific fields have been created that are nothing but scientific fraud. There is a lot of money to be made, articles to be published and careers to be made.

This has turned into a symbiotic relationship. The scientists and experts lie for the social engineers and corporations, which in turn protect them and finance them. A well-financed propaganda machine has been set up to protect them by promoting their exclusive rights to science and knowledge, and by creating the concept of “scientific consensus” – the most unscientific thing in the history of science.

So, how can we determine if science is made up and fraudulent? The simplest way is to check the use of “models” in the field in question – although research can be falsified by other methods as well. A model in this context is a simulation which has variables plugged into it which can be selected at will, and “adjusted” (manipulated) at will. Models like that are rarely simulations of reality – their purpose is to create an alternate reality. They are fakes, and usually bought and paid for with some agenda in mind. A simple rule of thumb is that if you see the word “model” in a research paper – then that research is likely a fraud someone paid the researchers to carry out.

There are entire fields that depend almost exclusively on modelling – and are almost entirely divorced from reality. “Climate science” is the most obvious one. It is mostly based on models which, in the rare cases they can be tested, never work. It is completely agenda-driven and run by dishonest bought-and-paid-for hacks and imbeciles.

This model fraud is everywhere now. I recently saw a research paper which demonstrated that the covid virus could hide in the body for years, thus explaining “long covid” – another agenda-driven fraud. When I looked closer I realized that the researchers hadn’t actually found any covid virus in the body. They had found it in a model! What a magnificent discovery!

It can be said that the biggest progress mainstream science has made in the last few decades is its transition from ego-driven subterfuge to hide its shortcomings into a machine for outright making stuff up. Scientists and experts nowadays have moved into the reality-creation business like politicians and spin doctors. They work on narratives rather than knowledge. No wonder they are so cozy with our political elites.

Everything about modern science is an antithesis to real science. Real science is as simple as it can be and never unnecessarily complex. It accepts contributions and critique from anybody, not just from the initiated. It is based on individual genius, never on consensus and mob rule. It is inspiring and exciting to attract the imaginative and curious rather than the unimaginative and boring. It is impulsive and intuitive as much as it is methodological. It deals with mysteries of life, death and the universe and anything else you can think of – not “permitted” subjects only. True science is truly magical. It is not a sterile wasteland managed by a cult.

Now, if you are one of those miserable bastards in group one that I discussed earlier, there is a silver lining in all this for you. Because of how little we really know, there is still magic in this world – and a lot of unsolved mysteries. But if you want to pursue them, you need to steer clear of the scientists and the experts. They will try to stop you.
