I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I read most of the article. I couldn't think of any examples of people I know or worked with, or those in my own family, who fit that mold.

Maybe some of my high school classmates grew up that way and/or went down that path. I'm sure they exist somewhere. How else can we have gotten the stupid-female-democrat-suburban-SJW vote? But it's alien to me.

I think you're possibly missing the point of the article by hyper-focusing on her own super-f'd-up family dynamic too. She's only adding that to say how she got to where she used to think and feel about everything, and only when she had children of her own did she realize how toxic that environment has become for her own children.

Regardless of how we all got here today, the kids are REALLY screwed up. It's because in modern America where both parents work and the schools have far more influence on the kid's brains than the families do, they're ripe for indoctrination.

In my younger days I did engage in turd-polishing, a bit like JO, crafting some sort of "ideal world" based on ideas that are not only unrealistic but counterproductive.

There are a couple of trains of reaction in that article that I'm trying to disentangle. One thing she seems to be reacting to is rootlessness... where you don't belong to any religion, family, neighborhood, workplace, friendships, or nation. I don't mean theoretical belonging, I mean having family, friends, neighbors, churches who actually step in and play a role in your life, helping you thru rough patches.

I suppose that feeling of non-belonging, alienation, makes people vulnerable to cults of all kinds.

Alienation is represented as "freedom". I read a similar hand-wringing article by a psychologist who specializes in treating dysphoric teens and young adults. She zeroed in on a couple of teens in particular, whose main concern seemed to be that they didn't know what they wanted from the future. What sex? What gender? What lifestyle? What belief system? Life was presented to them as an endless cornucopia of choices. (Really?) Meanwhile parents are pressuring to adopt a lifestyle they clearly weren't happy with themselves. One of them wanted to retreat to raising fluffy puppies out in the country.

AS IF!
That's what comes from choices and desires unbounded by reality. Like the author of the article: unmoored thinking.

Well that's the dilemma...

I had all the freedom in the world with zero responsibility, and what did I do with it? I ate shit food, I drank a tanker truck worth of cheap beer every year until my teeth fell out, I put on 70lbs, I let my house fall apart, I squandered a bunch of cash, I alienated anybody who still cared about me and I provided no net positive to anybody including myself.

It was only when I sobered up and fixed some relationships (and formed some obligations) that my life started getting improving. Like my Step-Dad always used to tell me, "No man is an island". He also extolled the virtues of Balance, which I'm now trying to incorporate in my life whenever possible.

In my mid-20's when I read 1984, I saw myself in Winston and thought he was the "Good Guy". In my mid-40's I'm not so sure that's the case. He's not a "Bad Guy", and Big Brother certainly isn't the Good Guy, but I'm not so sure about my feelings on Winston himself anymore. It would be interesting to get to know him all over again in a completely different setting that wasn't absolute oppression of all human life 24/7.

I will say Joker 2019 was an ok-ish movie, I thought it was degenerate but it would have been a better film if it was called 'Mr Mad Joke Man' and had nothing to do with DC comics.

I've got about 100 posts on Avatar 2 for the very same reason. Watching woke trash lose to Maverick, just like I was watching Joker destroy Star Wars on a $50,000,000 budget.

I never once said that Joker was a good guy or that I looked up to him in any of those posts. I praised Phoenix's acting ability and said that I was worried about his mental state after immersing himself in that role, especially after what happened to Ledger.

I also said that I was exhausted after experiencing that movie in the theater. It was a grueling watch. And I've never seen it again.

Hubby and I spent some time talking about the original article and how ppl can avoid any sort of ideological"purity" trap, and it seems to us that being "results oriented" stomps on ideology. If you really want to achieve something, you should go out and try. You may learn that you can't save the world/ promote women etc. bc the forces arrayed against you are too great.

Back in "uni" days I remember sitting in on some leftist discussion groups. They turned into competitions of who was more "pure", who interpreted Marx/ Lenin/ Trotsky/ Engels/ (fill in the blank) more "correctly". But when it came to organizing the teaching assistants into a union they were nowhere to be found.

Same with the few "women studies* classes I briefly audited. Oh my, they could grind on a grotch forever! Chapter and verse about past injustices. All correct! But only a few put on their big girl pants and got degrees in engineering, physics, math, chemistry... And when it came to getting women's bathrooms in the engineering building... Again, nowhere to be found.

We have a mutual friend. He's spent a lifetime talking with his leftist friends and marching in "demos" but he made the most difference when he was a bosun's mate and union rep on Great Lakes freighters, or was a patient rep at a care facility.

1) Every event in Joker happened. None of it was the Joker hallucinating nor was there an M. Night Shyamalan plot twist completely reinterpreting all previous action.

2) Joker had an extremely simple character arc. He starts as a guy who follows all the rules. Rules make him unhappy while being a clown. Then he has a DIVINE revelation. Call it an epiphany. Call it a belief in himself and his power as a free American to make his own rules. He is not a failure. He is not unimportant in the scheme of life. He is not even mentally ill! He only has a gun but at long last, the Joker is a (small) SUCCESS! HE IS FAMOUS! AND ON TV! All his previous suffering, sadness, and sins are dissolved and washed away leaving only pure ANARCHY.

3) I was afraid Joaquin Phoenix might pull a muscle because he was acting so hard but I was never afraid he'd go crazy playing Joker. He didn't go crazy playing Commodus, the Evil Emperor, in the R-rated movie Gladiator (2000). Neither was there a danger to his mental health while playing the main character in R-rated Joker (2019).

4) The difference between Gladiator and Joker is that the gladiator justifiably kills Joaquin Phoenix because he deserves it while the Joker, living in lawless America rather than ancient Rome, doesn't get what he deserves. There are so many Americans that have to kill themselves slowly (e.g. Rush Limbaugh) because nobody will do the just and proper thing for them quickly in America, the Land of the Free to be the biggest failure within your powers.
