I'm going to the Madison Comic Con (which Jewel Staite will be at!), and I'm going to try cosplay for the first time. I couldn't find a cosplay-specific section of this forum, but let me know if I should be posting these sorts of questions somewhere else.

It looks like my friends are going as Kaylee, River, and Jayne. I was thinking I'd go as Wash and was hoping I could get some advice.

This is the Wash look I'm shooting for:

I was thinking I'd get these coveralls for the flight suit he wears underneath. Does anyone know of anything they think is better?

I have some old Hawaiian shirts lying around, so I'll probably just pick whichever one I think is closest (unless anyone knows a cheap and fairly spot-on version available online?).

The shoes I think I'll just get wrong. I also have brown hair, so maybe I'll bleach it?

Any other advice? Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be a crazy difficult costume.

Also, I think the "brown" coveralls are closer than the "spruce" coveralls, but I'm also red/green colorblind, so this isn't exactly my strong suit. Thoughts?

That image you posted has a broken link for me. Is it available another way?

The Spruce is the closest to that particular Wash in fact it's actually almost exact!!! I think you should go for the Spruce color for that Wash. I also found this link if you want for shirts closer to Wash's. I don't know what hawaiian shirts you have but a lot of people do custom stuff on Etsy. :D

P.S. I just met Jewel today and let me tell you she is such a sweetheart. She loves her browncoats and Firefly cosplayers!!!! She'll even talk to you for a good amount of time and have a really nice conversation with you. Just be wary of handlers because at my local con they were a bit rude when you asked to approach guests. Jewel was a sweetie but her handlers were a bit rude. :D

Now you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you.

Hmmm. I'm not sure what happened. It worked for me when I first posted it, but now it looks broken to me too. Weirdly, I could still click on it, refresh the page, and see the image. I'll repost, but here is it broken up, if you want to just piece it together to follow it.

COSPLAYWITHCAPTMAL, awesome that you got to meet Jewel! I don't think I'll get to meet her in Madison, but I'm glad to hear she's nice.

And thanks for the costume advice!

You're very welcome!!!!! She's not just nice man I mean she's a real sweetheart and really fun to be around. She personalized my autograph with "I love my captain" and a little cute heart with her name because I was cosplaying Mal yesterday. She ended up holding the line to talk to people and chatted with me for a good 5 minutes. She's a really awesome person and just fun. :)

OK, the quick link didn't work, but adding in the firefly/wash/ref8.jpg worked. OK, I see what you did.

ThaT shirt doesn't scream Hawaiian to me, more like northwoods. But it does provide excellent reference for the flight suit which is likely always the same. When I think of his shirts, that sky blue and gold one sticks out to me.

For footwear, his in the pic don't look like what I would guerss, but in modern day, the easy accompanyment for a flight suit can be combat boots - only experts would differentiate between them. Combat boots (or maybe even flight boots) should be available at military surplus stores, maybe even goodwill - a little scuffing adds authenticity. Also no need to apply shoe polish, or fix the scuffing - just rub it bare to get the dirt off. Flight line operations do not allow shoe polish or other waxes on uniforms because they are flammable and cannot be near liquid oxygen.

Actually, now that I went to that address for the pic on another tab, the image shows up in your post as well. So now I need to edit it from this post.
