Hi,

Here is my next chapter/story/book on Serenity.

Since I do not use "colorful metaphors" (Star Trek IV Kirk and Spock) much,
I do not seem to think about adding them into my writing. I know it changes the feel of Firefly/Serenity. Sorry about that.

I offer my beginnings for your enjoyment and help to improve the the feel of the not to expected to be published story. Enjoy and offer suggestions if you wish. Since it is mine and for me primarily, I'll accept or reject them as I want - no hard feelings. Help with Manderin and being in character is appreciated.

Contact me privately at edgarcorny gmail com if you wish.

My Serenity 2

Recon

-----

There were thirteen people in the common area on Serenity. It was the first meeting of Serenity's crew with Who's people. As is normal the The two groups of people that were strangers to each other were sitting slightly apart.
The first group consisted of the old Serenity crew: Mal, Zoe, Jayne, Kaylee, River, Valkyrie, Simon, and Inara.
The second group consisted of Who's people: J, Humperdink, Gwen, Wayne, and Goldarn.

Mal: “First I'd like to welcome Jay Tea,” Mal pointed “ Gwen Dee Lynch, Corporal Duke Wayne, Stewart Goldarn, and Max Humperdink.”
Mal then introduced the Serenity crew members to Who's.
Mal: “I agreed with Who about the initial groups. We may need to make a few changes but a starting place is a starting place.
“We have three teams and one independent operator.
“I am the captain of Serenity. Zoe is second in command when we both are aboard. We both fought in the War. If you've got questions, I'm the top of the chain of command.
“Kaylee is the mechanic on board. She's a non-combatant.
“River is my pilot and can handle a weapon.
“The four of us constitute the crew of Serenity. Serenity is an unarmed freighter. We are also combat team two. With the need to keep the smuggler cover, we will handle any issue that is not Who related. Changes might occur but not at this time.
“Inara is our Companion and will be used for tapping into the off-ship higher ups for information. She will not be servicing crew people.”
A hand went up: “I'll take questions after the first assignment.”
“Yes Sir.”
“The first combat team is commanded by Val with Jayne, Jay and Hump. Hump will be the shipboard corpsman when Simon is not aboard. Hump, Simon, please get together and start working out how.”
“Yes” “Yes Sir”
“The Aid Station will be headed by Simon if the issue is medically oriented. Goldarn is a nurse but is also in charge of security. I do not expect problems from outsiders but Simon is not trained for military. Simon, Goldarn, please get together and find a workable solution to these cross purposes.”
“Yes” “Yes Sir”
Mal: “Wayne and Gwen will be working under Simon though things will need to be flexible
“Serenity has only limited bunking. If you want to shift assigned bunking, keep Zoe and I informed so we can find you.
“We've had to upgrade the environmental systems and the only place to expand was one of the passenger cabins. Most of the time there will be nine of us on board. Only when the Aid Station is moving will the bunking be an issue.”
As the briefing evolved into talking and broke up into smaller groups, issues were sometimes settled and other items were cropped up.
River broke orbit from Ariel and started the journey back to the fringe.

Mal, Zoe, Val, Simon and Wayne worked as sort of a command staff so that coordination would best.
In the several weeks back to the fringe with a “cargo” of spare parts for Serenity, Kaylee and Mal were quite happy. It was the first time spares for some of the parts had been available on board. A second “cargo” was the supplies for the Aid Station.
Combat Team 1 and the Aid Station were shaking down into better shape despite the rough edges. Most of the original crew of Serenity were uneasy – they had not worked with Alliance military before and it was taking longer than the command team wanted to wear off.
On the other side of the coin, Wayne's men were uneasy with the non-military members of the crew and an unarmed freighter.

-----

The command staff was meeting and discussing preliminary dispositions.
Simon: “I'm not really interested in returning to Jiangyin at the moment, but something like it would be a good starting point, I think.”
Wayne: “Why not Jiangyin if you don't mind me asking?”
Zoe: “The local hill folk kidnapped Simon and River at one time. They needed a doctor and took one.”
Val: “Why did you not go after them?”
Mal: “Shepard Book had been shot just after they disappeared. He was in a bad way. So I went took care of Book's needs first and then returned.”
Simon: “They rescued us in the end. We were going to be burned at the stake when they showed up.”
Wayne: “You're kidding.”
“Nope.”
Mal: “He can share the tale if he wants at another time. How about starting at Paradiso?”
Simon: “They do need help there as much as anyone. I'd like to look into Bowden's Malady to be sure we will not be there too long.”
Mal: “That sounds good. How about a second choice?”
Wayne: “How about Jin Way Do? They are rebuilding from a failed Reavers attack. Not many can but those that can need extra help.”
Simon: “I'll look into that also. Can we build up a list of those that need help and sort by need?”
Mal: “That will also give us a list of excuses in case we need to focus on a specific area.
“Val, Wayne, Simon. Work on that as you can. I'd like four or five alternates quickly but more is better. Take time to work through the others past the initial group.”
Zoe: “Have we heard from Harrow?”
Mal: “Yes, it fell through, timing wasn't right. He did say another time.”
Val: “What about Badger and the crazy woman on Whitefall?”
Mal: “Badger has nothing right now but may by the time we get out to Persephone. Nothing from Patience yet.”
Wayne: “Any reason not to go straight to Paradiso?”
Mal: “Nothing specific but I'd like to think on it a day or two first.”

-----

Serenity lands outside Paradiso.
Mal, Zoe, and Simon take the mule into town.
Sheriff Bourne looks up: “Well I never thought I'd see you again. What brings you back?”
Mal: “I'd not expected to be back. I'm Malcomb Reynolds and captain the ship Serenity. This is Zoe my second in command. And this'eres Simon Tam – a sometime doctor on the core worlds with a Aid Station I'm moving around.”
Simon: “Sheriff, with the medical needs out here, I'm doing some special low cost medical service for out here. The Alliance is not too worried about it, but I am.”
Sheriff: “Who's payin' for this iffin you don't mind my asking?”
Simon: “It is mostly private from the core worlds but a small amount is from one of the Alliance branches and some from Captain Reynolds.”
Sheriff: “Captain, what brought us to mind?”
Mal: “Bowden's Malady. Y'all seem among the worse off and I figgered you needed some doctoring – I did not think you might be able to keep one permanent like.”
Sheriff: “Well you got that right. What are you bringing and what can we provide?”
Simon: “We've a very good medical set up on the ship. It will take a few trips to unload and set up the Aid Station. A store or building or sheltered place to set up would be very helpful.
“I've studied Bowden's a bit and I think we'll be safe to stay for about 3-4 weeks.
“I won't require payment but any help will help stretch the service and supplies to others. I hope it will be what they can afford without causing financial hardships later.
“I have a four man staff. Myself, a nurse, an administrative assistant, and a heavy for moving people and being one end of a stretcher team. Places to stay for us would be nice. We have tents if need be.”
Sheriff: “I'm sure we can do for shelter and sleeping arrangements. We might not be able to cover all meals but I think we can due something. Would you be able to take trade instead of cash?”
Zoe: “Simon, if they could supply a cook, would you accept chickens or so in trade?”
Simon: “Ah. Yes, that would work if need be for some of the patients.”
Mal: “Simon, can you and Zoe take over from here? If so, I'll head back to the ship. When you have a place to unload and set up, wave and we'll get a crew together for starting to move the supplies to the site.”
Simon: “Yes. That would work.”
Sheriff: “Thanks for the help Captain.”
Mal: “Glad to be able to do it. Could some of my crew wonder around here? The next stop is a few weeks away.”
Sheriff: “Sure.” Mal and Sheriff Bourne shake hands.

----

Outside Serenity, several horse drawn wagons and mules (both flesh and hover) are approaching with Simon in front.
Mal walks down the loading ramp with Jayne, Val, Gwen, Wayne and Kaylee. Inara is standing inside looking out at the unexpected scene.
A Deputy of Sheriff Bourne's and Simon approach.
Mal: “Hi.”
Simon: “This is deputy Lon Smith.” Mal and Smith shake hands.
Simon: “The town is excited by the Aid Station and wanted to help with moving supplies from here to town. Zoe stayed behind and is helping the clean up.”
Mal: “Gwen here and Wayne are part of the Aid Station.”
River comes up with and interrupts Mal: “You've got a wave.”
Mal: “Val, take over moving while I take the wave. Smith, thanks for the help. Simon, be where ever you think you need to be. Kaylee give Simon a hand if he needs it. Jayne, help out Val as needed.”
Simon heads aboard Serenity and looks over the Aid Station to make some decisions on what to take and what to leave. Kaylee follows along.
In the hubbub of the transferring the load from Serenity to the wagons and mules, Simon seems to be needed everywhere. Gwen is being useful in tracking what is leaving Serenity and what is staying.
Wayne, Goldarn, and Jayne are helping out by checking the various wood wagons to make sure they are not overloaded.
Val enters Serenity and moves to the bridge. Mal is talking with a possible client it seems.
When Mal finishes, he turns to Val.
Mal: “It seems we have a cargo.”
Val: “Not a job?”
Mal: “No this one's legit. From Saint Albans to Dresden.”
Val: “That's two weeks to Saint Albans, ten days to Dresden, and three days back here. Works good.”
Mal: “Yes it does. What's up?”
Val: “Almost everything is loaded. Those sodders sure did come up with a lot of lift. We should be ready to head back in no more than an hour. Did you want to come along?”
Mal: “Yeah. I guess we aught to head on down. Either you or River need to stay with the ship.”

----

Inara met them at the cargo door.
Inara: “I would like to go along if I may.”
Mal: “Sure. We'll take our mule. Both of us, Zoe and Kaylee will be returning.”
Inara: “I assume that Kaylee will be riding with Simon on the way out?”
Mal: “I expect so.”

A rather eclectic wagon train left Serenity on its way to Paradiso. The desert Scrub made the horse draw wagons look right and the hover craft might have looked a little out of place in a different era.
The monorail train track came beside them as they entered town (the same monorail Serenity's crew robbed years before). They turned down a side street away from the monorail tracks. A couple of streets down, there was a weather worn brick building on the corner. Next to it was an uncared for false front building that had a lot of activity surrounding it.
The left windows showed that the previous occupant had not had the money for a force screen window. Two panes of glass were missing. On the right window, two panes had been replaced with either a wood or plastic panel. Someone was replacing another one.
The single door in the middle had a raw wood brace to keep it square. In front of the left window was a post that seemed to be the remains of a hitching rail like was in front of the right side. What might have been a water trough on the left was dilapidated, dry and had some purple flowering weeds and some grayish plants in it.
A couple of youngsters were working on the planks on the boardwalk in front to repair it
The away from the corner building on the left was an alleyway. A wagon was being unloaded there through a side sliding door.
Activity inside seemed just as busy. As Simon opened the door for them, he said: “Be careful with that.”
Inside looked to be a hodgepodge of hanging sheets, new wood walls, electric lights (not the glows that were common in the central planets), new furniture and old refurbished as well. The floor looked like it was having a set of smooth planks being attached to cover the worn and rough planks.
He turned back to Mal and the crew from Serenity.
Simon: “Welcome to the Aid Station. The town has gone all out for us.”
A few people stopped when they saw Inara – mouths hanging open.
Zoe shouting: “Grab that. It's breakable.”
Mal jumped ahead and grabbed with another fellow to hold it in place as others jacked up the large medical device before it hit the floor. Simon was there and looked underneath. The plank and the floorboard both broke.
Zoe: “Let's move this about two feet towards the street. Then we can set it down.”
Someone: “I'm sorry. I thought that floorboard was good.”
Zoe: “Don't worry. Let's get this instrument stable and the fix the problem. It's all that matters.”
A few moments later the machine was on solid board and the floor damage was being assessed. Simon was examining the machine. There were no visible problems from an external examination. Powering up and testing it would be the real test.
Zoe: “Let's take a break while we can. Saving a few seconds now to speed installation will mean nothing if we brake stuff.”
Simon showed the newcomers around. There was a table (made from a piece of wood across a barrel and a small metal filing cabinet) that would be a front desk for patients to report in. This would be where Gwen would spend a lot of time. To the right was a waiting area with a few mismatched chairs. As they stood there, another chair was brought in.
To the left was an undefined area where a few things were temporarily stacked. There was a cloth “wall” on the right that separated the waiting area from the back of the building. The left side had a wood wall cobbled together part was (the rest of the was was open for moving supplies and would not be completed until the rest of the supplies were sorted out). Once completed, the left side would be records storage.
Starting down the central hall, the first “room” of cloth walls was being sorted out by Gwen and Wayne. Shelves of non-medicine items were along the walls and a small make shift table was in the middle for working on.
Simon pointed across the future hallway and said that will be an Aid Station office. The next pair of rooms once again were wood on the left and cloth on the right.
Responding to Mal's query, the cloth walls were completed before Simon had realized it and so the wood walls which probably needed to be put up first were the last to be completed. The left room was to be an examining room and the right room was to contain an imaging machine.
The next pair of rooms were both wood walled. The incomplete left one a second examining room and the right one was a different imaging machine. Not needing to know which machines Simon said did what, Mal did not ask for clarification of the machines.
The final pair of rooms had a wood or plastic paneled wall towards the back of the building. The cloth on the right was to be a triage/urgent room for emergencies. On the left was a wood room (not complete) purpose not quite settled.
A wide door in the center of the hall had a locking mechanism. Behind here were four small sleeping cubicals, a common area, a small kitchen and a storage area that was slowly getting organized.
A small loading/unloading area with some open area on the left was next to the loading door to the alley.

Around the table in back sat Mal, Zoe, Kaylee, Inara, Gwen, Simon, Wayne, Goldarn, Sheriff Bourne, and a different deputy.
Simon: “Well what do you think?”
Inara spoke up first: “I am impressed. I think you have done a very good job in a short time.”
Mal: “I thank y'all for the good work.”
Sheriff: “This is the first real doctor we've had in about two years. Thanks for thinking of us.”
Mal with a sly grin: “Simon, maybe I should let you organize the next loading of Serenity.”
Simon: “Do you have a job?”
Mal: “Yes we do.” he explained the set up.
Mal: “We can delay a day or two if you need us here.”
Simon looked to the Sheriff: “What do you think?”
Sheriff: “If you could wait until mid-day tomorrow just in case, I'd preshadit. Since this a first time for you as well as us, I'd like a small safety margin just in case.”
Mal: “Zoe?”
Zoe: “I think that tomorrow night would be good enough. I'd like to leave one more for security just in case for this first set up.”
Sheriff: “I'd been planning an two extra deputies for the first few days to help you out. We can change from there. Let you get good rest at night. As I understand it both Wayne and Goldarn can provide security also.”
Simon: “That sounds good. What about a place to keep livestock?”
“Mal: “Livestock? What's that about?”
Sheriff: “Some may want to pay in kind instead of cash. We'll have someone come out to cook most meals.”
Mal: “If you're happy with it Simon, that's all that matters. You are lead with the Aid Station.”
Simon: “I am comfortable with it.”
Inara: “I'm curious about how this building is being paid for. Not that I need to know.”
Sheriff: “The bank loaned it to us free of charge as long as it was left no worse than it is before we moved in.”
Mal: “Since this is the first time we've tried it and the first time in a long while you've done it, I think we have a good win-win for both of us”.
Sheriff: “I have an ulterior motive. I'd like to make it a good visit and hope you will come back.
“Unless the place is sold or rented when you return, I doubt the walls will be torn out.”
Kaylee: “You seem to think that we'll be back. I hope we will also.”
Sheriff: “If you will wait to leave until after dark tomorrow, I arrange a shindig for you tomorrow evening.”
Mal: “Should I let the rest of Serenity's crew know?”
Sheriff: “Sure, we'll work out something so everyone can attend for a short while at least.”
Mal: “Simon, if Gwen can be spared, how about letting her administrate with the Bourne's assistant for the schedule.”
Groans abounded.

----

Mal, Zoe and Inara returned to Serenity for the night.
The next day was an unusual one in the desert. There was sign of rain. A short cloud burst and then the desert in all it's magnificence that it seldom displayed bloomed and faded within a few hours. The purples and reds and greens and yellows and pinks were all intermingled. In the short life span for a wet desert everything was struggling for the life long demand of procreation.
The pipe organ cactus and the saguaros cactus and the cholla all put forth. It was as if the desert wanted to joint the festive mood of the town.

At one point during the day, Inara pulled Mal aside. “Do you think that Gwen looks a bit like Simon?”
Mal replied, “Why do you ask?”
Inara looks to Mal, “Should I not ask that question?”
Mal: “No. But keep it under your hat. Neither recognize each other and Shepard Book did not want anyone to force a recognition.”
Inara: “His daughter?”
Mal, “Yes. How do you know?”
Inara looked again: “They have some similar mannerisms. May I ask who is behind this?”
Mal: “It started with Shepard Book but I really would not like to say anything more. I was asked to keep it very quite.”
Inara: “Shepard Book is still a comforting influence.”
Mal: “Yeah.
“Changing the subject, why are you showing yourself here as much as you do if I may ask?”
Inara: “I think we can trust these people and if I need to come into town, people will be comfortable with me.
“Besides, I am enjoying your company. And the crew's also.”

As the Aid Station completion and the thank you party approached, Simon and Kaylee snatched a minute or two here and there.
Simon: “I'm sorry this happened. I really wanted to find our daughter.”
Kaylee: “I know. Things just happen, ya know?”
Simon: “She'd be about the same age you were when you hired on with Mal.”
Kaylee: “Yeah. Now it will be four weeks before we see each other again.”
Simon: “We can have another and still look for the first.”
Kaylee was trending towards tears: “But we ain't got the money for three – just like before.”
Inara happens to walk up: “Hey you two. Let's ... Kaylee are you all right?”
Kaylee: “Maybe Simon and me ought to go away.” Kaylee turns and goes away.
Inara: “What?”
Simon: “Kaylee wants a child and we can not support it yet. I think she'd go to the Central Planets with me to get a family.”
Inara: “Simon, she'd never be able to fit there. She'd be miserable.”
Simon: “Yes. Mal's been good to us and for us but the financial restrictions chafe.”
Inara: “What about any additional money from this aid station?”
Simon: “It will help but not enough. I wish I could have found ours but I did not have enough time to do much in Ariel.”

As the conversation continues, another between Gwen and River is occurring.

Gwen: “It's my first time out here. I'm excited and afraid at the same time.”
River: “I understand. But don't worry, You'll do fine.”
Gwen: “You think so? Really?”
River: “Yes. Do you ever wonder who your biological parents are?”
Gwen: “I do not remember them and have not wondered. My step parents are my real parents, anyway.”
River senses but does not mention the slight equivocation she feels in Gwen.
THUMP!!! Then yelling starts.
Gwen looks around a fight that is starting.
River gently puts an arm around Gwen to keep her away.

Mal, Zoe, Val, Wayne and Sheriff Bourne wade in and break up the fight.
Someone was swinging a timber and hit a fellow on the head.
One was thrown over the right hand hitching rail and someone else flew head first into the watering trough.
Mal shouts, “Team one!”
Goldarn responds. The Sheriff calls for his deputies.
In a few minutes the fight is settled. Three had been injured and Simon opens the Aid Station for business earlier than expected.
The Aid team works out well for its first time in action.

After dinner, Simon decides he would follow out to Serenity for a private goodbye.
Gwen: “Would you mind if I ride out and back with you?”
Simon, a little surprised: “No I'd enjoy the company on the return.”

After Serenity takes off, Gwen: “What is it like living on a ship?”
Simon: “It's hard to describe but I'll try.
“When River and I first got boarded Serenity, we were hunted fugitives. Captain Reynolds was very good about about helping out by letting us stay on the ship. He had a very rough personality at the time. I think most of it was his feeling of betrayal when the Independents left him and Zoe at Serenity Valley in the War.”
Gwen: “They were in the War? They don't seem like bad people.”
Simon: “The people who win wars rewrite history to show them as good and the losers as evil. There were good people and bad in the side of Independents and the same for the Alliance.
“Mal and I had many an argument over right and wrong. But I did follow him during the Reaver Incident.”
Gwen: “You were in the Reaver Incident?”
Simon: “Yes. All of us from Serenity were. At the time there were nine of us: Mal, Zoe, Wash, Inara, Jayne, Kaylee, River, Shepard Book and myself.”
Gwen: “I thought the Reaver Incident was some Alliance attempt to kill off the Reavers.”
Simon, with a snort/chuckle: “No, that is what the Alliance wants you to believe. It was us against the Alliance and the Reavers. We lost Zoe's husband Wash and Shepard Book in that war. And it was a War even though it is not called one. Every one of us except, I think, Inara was wounded. Inara had a few scratches, but Kaylee and I were shot ...” and Simon seemed to drift off into mumbled memory.
Gwen: “Do you love Kaylee?”
Simon startles back to the present: “Yes.”
Gwen: “I'm sorry, I did not mean to sadden your spirits.”
Simon: “You did not. The so called Reaver Incident was very intense. The memories can be intense at times.” He has a small smile for Gwen.
Simon: “Maybe I'll tell you more another time.”
Gwen: “It sounds like what is in adventure novels but maybe the novels are romanticizing them a bit.”
Simon: “Yes. They down play the fear and scary to almost nothing like the reality.”
The sky was darkening from deep blue to black as they entered Paradiso.
There was a Deputy outside the Aid Station as they approached.
Simon: “Hi Hale. I forgot to ask where we can store the vehicles. Do you know where?”
Hale: “Sure. Round back you'll across the alley you'll see where. Feldrik is back there so don't worry none. We've gotcha covered.”
Simon: “Thanks.”
Hale tips his hat to Gwen. “Miss Gwen, Doc.”

After they enter the Aid station, Gwen asks Simon, “They seemed genuinely please to be here for us.”
Simon, “They are. Those tips of the hat are more genuine than many Central Plant hello's that are more like automatic responses.”
Gwen, “That's what I felt. I guess I'll be quite surprised at the cultural differences.”
Simon: “It was a shock to me when I first got out here with River. I'd been raised in a home that was in the highest level of society and Mal was from the lower end. Talk about points of conflict. It was good to have had to hang on together long enough for us to start to understand each other.”
Gwen: “May I ask you a question about Mal?”
Simon: “I might not be able to answer but ask.”
Gwen: “Mal and Inara. What is going on there? It seems like they are having a rough time about something but I can not figure it out.”
Simon grinned a sad grin: “I'll not tell you everything but they care deeply for each other. They married once and then divorced. I'll leave it there for now.”
Gwen: “Thank you for that much.”

The Aid Station crew sat around their common area and enjoyed some quiet time together.
Wayne: “Well that was a nice shindig. Should we plan for a night watch?”
Simon: “There are two deputies outside. I do not think we'll need a night watch tonight but after the newness of our being here wears off, it might be good to reconsider it.
“I'm not a great shot but the three of us will probably need to get used to the idea.”
Gwen: “What about me?”
Wayne: “Have you had to use a weapon to kill?”
Gwen: “No.”
Wayne: “For the time being I think we should not use you in the rotation. Simon?”
Simon: “Gwen, do you have any firearms training?”
Gwen: “Just the basic and middle level courses. Not the advanced one.”
Simon: “Gwen for right now, we will leave you out. However, I recommend that you continue to practice with either Wayne or Goldarn. I think you need to be ready just in case.
“How is that?”
Gwen: “It would be good. I'd like to feel that I could take care of myself.”

----

Mal and Inara were in her shuttle.
They were sitting side by side and holding hands.
Mal: “Well, that was a good start.”
Mal: “Yes it was.”
He looks into her eyes: “I'll try hard not to mess this up. I'm very sorry that I could not handle it the last time.”
Inara, “I'll have to be a Companion not a pretend one. But I'll try very hard also.
“I'd really like to have this child. I want to be a family.”
Mal: “So do I. So do I.
“Maybe we can put enough away this time with extra from Who's account so that it will work. I really do not want to loose you again.”
Inara: “I'm very sorry about Kaylee and Simon. They still care deeply for each other.”
Mal: “I wish I could have had Kaylee stay with the Aid Station.”

Serenity sped on to her cargo in Saint Albans.

----

Two people showed up to cook for Simon and his aid station.
Nanny Lan knocked on the side door and waited. She may have been attractive in her youth. She was still good looking but three kids and a hard life had aged her. Her man (Simon was not sure if they were married or not) was beside her. A small 6-7 year old was standing holding on to her mother's leg.
Wayne opened the door: “Yes?”
Nanny: “We here for to cook today. We was slow gittin' movin' 'n' I brought Al and the youngest so's I could cook fowa all at one time iffin ya don' mind.”
Wayne was trying to decipher the statement when Simon appeared: “Hi Nanny. Come in and get out of the cold. Who have you got with you?”
Nanny: “I hope you don't mind me brunging Al and Sis.”
Simon: “Not at all. Have a seat.” Simon shook Al's hand.
Sis was hiding behind her mothers skirts being shy.
Simon: “Who are you?” was met by one big eye peeping out from behind Nanny's skirts.”
Gwen had walked up: “I've got coffee started.”
Nanny: “Oh my I shoulda been here sooner to cook.”
Gwen: “Coffee is not cooking.”
Simon: “Al would you come with me, I need a little help.”
Al: “Sure.”
Alone in one of the examining rooms, Simon gave Al a small pill.
Simon: “I do not have a lot of these to give out but this should help the hangover.”
Al: “Thanks. I kin'a over did it.”
Simon: “We all do once in a while. Mind if I give you a quick examination?”
Al: “Not at all doc.”

Nanny was bustling around the kitchen area with several items cooking. Gwen was looking after Sis while getting prepared for the morning's opening.
Goldarn and Wayne were sitting out of the dinning area taking it easy before the bustle of the day started.”
Al and Simon returned. Not long after that, breakfast was ready.

----

River: “Captain to the bridge.”
A few moments later, Mal came through the hatch: “What's up?”
River: “We're being hailed by a ship. They want to dock with us.”
Mal: “Huh. Any info on who they are?”
River: “Only that they are Alliance DD-914.”
Mal: “Alliance DD 914. This is Captain Malcomb Reynolds of the freighter Serenity. I understand you want to dock with us. Is there a problem?”
DD 914: “No problems. We would like to dock. Bona fides is being sent now.”
Mal: “I understand. Please coordinate with my pilot.”
DD 914: “Thank you.”

Minutes later Serenity and DD 914 were connected. As Mal opened the door to the connecting tube, Who swum the tube to Serenity.
Mal: “Hi Who. Any problems?”
Who: “Thanks for letting us dock. This might be the best way to meet clandestinely. We were in high orbit when you left Simon. We watched from a distance to be sure you were not being tailed.”
Mal: “Ah. No problems then?”
Who: “No. The Paradiso set up went well. I had a under cover man back there. He says the functioning of the aid station is working very well. Nothing but ordinary start up issues so far.”
Mal: “That's good to know. By the way, we have a sweet set up for this cargo run. Comments?”
Who: “Other than letting a few contacts get good reports on you, I had nothing to do with it. Nothing you do not deserve.”
Mal: “Thanks. You need to meet with the crew?”
Who: “Not the crew, no. How's Kaylee doing?”
Mal grinned: “In hog heaven. She's never had so many spares before. Sort of offset Simon being left behind. She and Inara are enjoying each others company.”
Who: “Any other issues here with the crew?”
Mal: “Naw. Nothing out of the ordinary. Are you going to get involved much with the Smuggling side?”
Who: “Not at the moment. Once we've shaken down a bit, I might but not before talking to you first.”
Mal: “Thanks.”
Who: “How are you and Inara doing?”
Mal: “We're work on things. Are you going to send clients to her for messages?”
Who: “I'll probably do some of that but I do not want to relay too heavily on any one method.”
Mal: “Patterns.”
Who: “Yes.” A pause. Then: “I am sorry that this may make it difficult for you and Inara.
“I suspect that you would prefer to leave the Alliance to its own devices.”
Mal: “As you say, the Alliance is the only game in town. I like it out here where the influence is diminished but I agree with you that this is the best course for now.”
Who took his leave.

Serenity continued towards Saint Albans.

----

Wayne and Goldarn started showing up in the Saloons and Bars some evenings. They listened and visited and drank a little.

Gwen took Simon aside in the office one day during lunch: “Would you mind if I went with them one evening?”
Simon: “Stir crazy are you?”
Gwen: “Yes. I just want to get a change of scenery.”
Simon: “I am also. How about checking with Wayne and/or Goldarn about who stays behind here or if they feel we don't need anyone more than the deputies.
“Then you and I can go have supper somewhere.”
Gwen: “Yes, that sounds good.”

The restaurant would have been a negative star on Osiris or Ariel. Here in Paradiso it was a two star.
As they awaited for their meal, Gwen asked “You worked on Osiris didn't you?”
Simon: “No, I grew up on Osiris and went to school there. River and I have not been back. I don't know if our parents are still there. I worked on Ariel for the past few years.”
Gwen: “River is you girl friend then?”
Simon: “River? No, River is my sister.”
Gwen: “Who's your wife?”
Simon: “Kaylee is my wife.”
Gwen (looking startled): “Oh! Uh. What about Mal and Inara?”
Simon: “That's a murky situation. Basically they married but divorced latter.”
Gwen (looking down at the table): “I think they still love each other.”
Simon: “They care very deeply for each other. I do not think I should say more right now. Feel free to ask them if you would like.
“Any reason for the questions?”
Gwen: “I do not want to intrude. I guess I'm trying to practice my learned skills. This is my first time in the field without support.”
Simon: “Feel free to ask. If I do not feel comfortable answering, I'll not answer.
“I had never intended to be out on the fringes, but it happened. The way I learned was by being thrown in the deep end and it was sink or swim.”
Gwen: “No training. That must have been rough.”
Simon: “It was but I survived. I do not think I'd be able to work in the core again.”
Gwen: “You were a few months ago.”
Simon: “Yes and for a few years before River and I came out here. I think that I am as comfortable here as I ever was in the Core.”
Gwen: “More so Maybe?”
Simon: “Yes. I think Serenity is more home to River and me than Ariel ever was.
“And I would never have met Kaylee if I'd not come out here.” He smiled.
Gwen: “Then why did you go back?”
Simon: “Here comes our order. Another time maybe.”

After the meal, Simon and Gwen took a short walking tour of some of the town. As they turned a corner, two people were coming up to them from the other direction. One grabbed Gwen and they other punched Simon.
Before a few moments went by, two deputies showed up and grabbed the two attackers.
Gwen was standing there wide eyed.
Simon: “Are you all right?”
Gwen: “I'm not hurt but that was a shock.”
One of the deputies, Black Rock: “We saw you leaving the Aid Station and thought to follow you just in case. We've had three rapes and two robberies on the streets in the past month.”
Simon: “Thanks Rock. Should we come down to the office now?”
Rock: “It would be best to do it while everything is still fresh.”
Simon took the com unit out of his pocket: “Wayne, Goldarn. Are you hearing me.”
Goldarn: “I'm here. Wayne is out somewhere.”
Simon: “Let the deputies there know you are going out and then meet me at the Sheriff's office.
“Gwen and I were attacked by some with an I Q of less than the current air temperature. Gwen is unhurt. I'm fine.
“We are about two blocks from the eating place. I'd like you to be an escort back to the aid station. We have two deputies right now along with the perpetrators.
“I'd like some visible private protection when we return. If Wayne is closer to us than you and you can get hold of him, you can have him meet us while you stay with the office.”
Goldarn: “Sorry about this. I'll get it set up.”
Simon: “Thanks.”
Opening his jacket, Simon pulled out a small concealed weapon.

Wayne joined Simon and the lot from the crime site about half way to the jail.
One of the deputies accompanied Simon, Gwen, and Wayne back to the Aid Station.

When the Aid station crew had assembled in the small common area, Simon related what happened to Wayne and Goldarn.
Simon: “It was our first test of security. I think that the set up and the local cops worked well. There is always room for improvement though. I'd like to set a watch for the next few nights as practice as much as anything else.
“Sheriff Bourne was apologetic.”
Gwen: “He was embarrassed.”
Wayne: “I'm sure he was. Just like us when something happens on our turf. Gwen, I'd like you to start openly carry a gun.”
Gwen: “I'll need a hip holster. I've a shoulder holster but I think a gun on my hip would be better if you agree.”
Wayne: “I'll see to it tomorrow.”
Simon: “Is there a gun for me? I was too busy with the aid station supplies and overlooked a gun and holster.”
Wayne: “I'll check on it tomorrow also.
“It's almost eleven right now. Wayne and I will share the watch tonight. Gwen, get rested up and you'll have a spot tomorrow night.”
Gwen: “I'll be up for a while before I'll be able to sleep.”
Goldarn: “You were the target. Have you been in this situation before?”
Gwen: “No real world, just sim's.”
Goldarn looked to Wayne who nodded: “You can keep us company but you'll not be on the watch tonight.”
Simon: “I've been shot at before and have fired shots in anger before. If you need me, I'll be glad to pitch in.”
Wayne: “No Doc, you are the doctor and it's good to have you as a reserve but none of us could replace you. Our cover should not be blown.”
Simon: “Fine. I'll be a reserve.” He smiled.
Gwen obviously trying to change the subject and allow her mind to have a rest from the attack: “I wonder how Serenity is doing.”

----

Serenity was approaching St Albans orbit.

Serenity entered atmosphere with fire and entered a snow shower. She set down at Main Landing Docks.
Mal (ironically): “This is a very imaginative port name.” As he and Zoe walked down the ramp. Jayne and Val were not far behind.
In her energetic was, Kaylee came up: “Cap'n do you want any passengers?”
Mal: “Don't advertise but don't turn them away either. We need to leave openings for contacts.”
Kaylee: “O.K. Cap'n sir.”
Jayne: “Always the same name if there's only one dock on planet”.
Val: “Where to for the load contact?”
Mal: “We'll try the loading office first.”
Jayne: “Do they even have one?”
Zoe: “Won't know until we try.”
They entered what might be the dock's main office. It was one big room.
Someone at one of the desks: “Welcome. Are you the Firefly that just landed?”
Mal: “Yes. We're from the Firefly Serenity. Name's Malcomb Reynolds, captain.
He pointed as he continued: “Zoe, Val, and Jayne.”
“Have a seat, I'm Kim Jung. What can I do for you?”
Mal: “I've got a cargo to be picked up and mover to Dresden. Where would I go to find such information?”
Jung: “Across the street is the Cargo Guild. They match loads and ships there.”
Mal, “Thanks. Where can I get a weather report?”
Jung. “Right here. The current snow shower should be ending in about three hours and two hours after that thunder snow is expected.”
Mal: “Thanks again.”
“My pleasure.”

They crossed the street in the snow shower. A few people were out – a fellow in a brown coat and deep red pants – Two women and a covey of children all holding hands – A fellow with a large black handlebar mustache.
Zoe: “Reminds me of Tracey.”
Mal : “Yeah, he did.”
They pushed open the left hand door. A long counter spanned from the left wall to the wall that lined up with the right side of the entry's double doors. On the right were several conversational nooks and a waiting area.
A person behind the desk (who might have been a pretty man or a bland woman): “May I help you?”
Mal: “I'm Captain Malcomb Reynolds. I'm Looking for someone who has requested I pick up a cargo of his. I have a contact number.”
Person behind the desk: “If you would enter the number on one of the pads to your left, contact information will be provided.”
“Thanks.”

The woman entering the Cargo Guild was of an older but not old age. She was in her early middle years and walked with no-nonsense purpose. She had pants on that appeared to be a light brown corduroy. The blouse was a paisley with subdued colors. Her coat was a heavy cut (for the weather) light gray. She has standard worker's boots so she was not removed from hard work. Her eyes were like a hawks – moving and seeing everything but focused on the way forward.
As she removed a gaudy scarf that did not match the rest of her clothes, it was apparent that her face was handsome. When she saw Mal and the crew she new she'd found her contact and her smile lighted up the room.
Holding out her hand: “Captain Reynolds I presume? I am Carlinda Ti. Glad to meet you.”
Mal shaking hands: “I'm Malcomb Reynolds. This is my crew – Zoe, Jayne and Valkyrie.”
Ti: “Do you have any questions about the cargo or the job?”
Mal: “You want to have this cargo of pelts to Dresden in ten days.”
Ti: “Yes. I have the paperwork here.”
Mal: “Thanks. There is thunder snow coming in in less than four hours. Can we be loaded before then? I'd like to be off the ground before the storm.”
Ti: “I'm not sure but we'll give it our best try. I think we can do it but you know.”
Mal: “Shiny.”

The cargo had been prestaged and it was luckily not to far from Serenity. The bustle to beat the storm was quick but orderly. The cargo bay was about three quarters full when they said goodbye to Ti and her workers.
Mal turned and waved as the loading door came up for flight.
The fringe of the snowstorm hit as they took off. Mal and River were on the bridge with Zoe.
Once they were in space, River turned to Mal: “Somethings not quite right.”
Mal looked at the panels and checked to see if anything was out of place.
River: “It's not the ship but something else. I think I'll need to walk around to find it. Can Zoe accompany me?”
Mal: “Sure. Keep me informed. Do you need someone else to help?”
River: “I do not think so, just Zoe.”
Mal: “Fine.”

River just sort of meandered around the ship trying to find what was bothering her. Zoe followed.
They passed Jay on the upper deck. Several others were in the common area. As she started into the engine room, she dropped to the floor to clear Zoe. Zoe was on alert for something.
Kaylee came up: “What's up?”
Zoe stepped past her.
Zoe looked to River. River pointed. Zoe followed to a panel that allowed access to something behind the wall. Zoe nodded her head to Kaylee. She went to a com in the passageway between the common and the engine room.
Mal hurried back. Jayne was behind him.
Removing the panel they found a stowaway. The fellow raised his hands: “Don't shoot. Don't shoot.”
Jayne reached in a pulled a small gun and a knife from the equipment cabinet's floor. In a quick set of moves, the stowaway had his hands tied behind his back His belongings included some tools and some moldable clay like substance.
Mal: “Jayne take the stowaway. River, stay close to Jayne. Zoe, make sure there's nothing else in there and have Kaylee check all the engine room for anything amiss.
“Have Hump examine the captive for anything concealed. Get Hump, Val, and Jay to start checking out the rest of the ship.
“I'll be on the bridge.”

Inara saw the activity and the stranger. She found Zoe.
Inara: “What's going on and why's Mal on the bridge?”
Zoe: “We found a stowaway in the engine room. There were items that might be usable to sabotage the ship.”
Inara's face showed surprise and concern: “Why's Mal on the bridge. He'd normally be leading the search on the ship.”
Zoe: “I think he's about to loose it. I've not seen him this mad since Serenity Valley. Talk to him if you can. I'm leading the search on the ship for problems.”
Inara: “I will.”
As Inara turned toward the bridge, Zoe felt someone nearby. She turned but there was no one there.

Inara entered the bridge and saw the tension in Mal's neck muscles. She closed the doors and walked to the other pilot's position to sit down.
Inara spoke: “Mal, are you all right?”
Mal not shouting but very strained: “MY SHIP. HE TRIED TO BLOW UP MY SHIP.
“You and Me and our child. He tried to blow up MY SHIP.”
Inara had not seen Mal like this but realized Zoe might have right after Serenity Valley.
Inara: “Mal. ...”
Mal interrupted her: “My ship. He tried to kill us Inara. He tried to kill US.
Inara realized however incompletely that he had lost his beliefs at Serenity Valley. Time had scabbed the hurt. But now, his fear was for loosing her and their child. He was close to loosing everything again. Zoe had been right. This might break Mal again.
She let him work through it some and when his tension seemed to be less, she walked over to him and touched his shoulder. He continued to talk softly and his one hand covered hers. She seemed to sense that he needed to get some of this fear out of his mind before he could be functional again.
Then it hit her that her going to be a Companion again was also causing strain on him. She had realized he was protective of her. This side of him she had not seen before. He was afraid of loosing her and this possible loss was tying in with the loss and betrayal he felt from Serenity Valley.
An a moment Inara felt a hand on her arm and she looked to see River. She knew. River was a Reader and knew. River quietly moved to the other pilots seat and sat down.
When Inara met River's eyes, River mouthed Zoe. Zoe was protecting the bridge.
It took however long it took for Mal's fear to subside enough that he realized River was there.

Mal's first coherent words in a while: “Thank you.”
River: “Are you ready to handle anything right now?”
Mal: “I'd like something to drink and eat and a few hours sleep but Give me a moment and I'll be ready for a report.”
River stood up and opened the door: “Zoe, could you get some light snacks, something to drink and bring Hump up. I think Mal might need some seeing to.”
Zoe: “Yes Ma'am.”

On her way to the dining area, Zoe paused again. It was at the same spot where she had thought she'd felt a presence before. She did not see anyone but the feel was like an itch she could not scratch.
Zoe: “River, could you come here?”

River walked up: “You feel something?”
Zoe: “Yes.”
River looked and felt: “Stay here.”
She walked to the common area: “Bring the prisoner quickly. Hump, Check on the Cap'n. He may need food and drink. Val, Jayne, I may need you in the crew passage to the bridge.”
She turned around and left as Jayne: “Why?”
Val: “Let's get the prisoner.”
Jayne: “Why can't I get no answers?” No body answered.

Hump had gone onto the bridge with some snacks and drinks and to check on Mal.
Hump: “Mal, let me check you out. How do you feel?”
Mal: “I'll be fine.”
Hump: “I’ll be the judge of that.”
Inara: “Please, Mal.”
Mal had his mouth open for a retort but he looked at Inara and nodded.
Hump: “Drink this. It's whiskey.”
Mal once again opened his mouth but then took the offered glass.
Humperdink looked at Inara. A quick once over of Mal and Hump said, “I'm not sure what happened to you. But I think you're over it. Was this a memory related stress reaction?”
Inara: “Yes it was. Mal will say of he wants to.”
Hump: “Mal, you need to get some rest. Inara, here's a pill to help him sleep.”
“Mal, I understand if you do not want to talk about it. However, the more I know the better I can help. I know I'm not Simon but I do want to help.”
Mal: “Thanks. Maybe later.”
Hump: “Anytime.”
After Hump closed the door, Inara and Mal just held each other instinctively for a few moments.

River, Zoe, Val, Jayne and the prisoner were in the passageway.
Mal and Inara approached.
Mal: “What's going on?”
River: “Zoe has a feeling here. I asked the rest to come.”
Mal looked at the prisoner: “Does he have a name?”
Val: “No. We can not get him to talk.”
Mal: “His name is Mudd until I decide differently.”
River: “Zoe feels something odd here. I can not feel it myself but I can through Zoe. I felt Mudd should be here.”
Mal grabs the lapels of Mudd's shirt. “My ship. I'm the captain. I can shove you out the lock right now.”
Mudd's eyes widen.
River pointed and said, “There:”
Mal: “Zoe.”
Zoe stoops and starts to remove some screws.
River: “Wait. Try the adjacent panel.”
Zoe moves over and opens a panel. She gentle feels around the support to the panel in question. “Something's not right.”
Mal walks over to the com: “Kaylee.”
The com responds with Kaylee's voice: “Yes cap'n?”
Mal: “I think you have some mirrors for tight places?”
Kaylee, “Yes.”
Mal: “Bring them to the passageway in the crew quarters. Get everyone out of the front of the ship and lock the doors.”
Inara: “I'll go back to my shuttle.”
Mal: “Thanks. Jayne, tie Mudd up and then you and Val return to the back of the ship and keep the doors locked.”
Jayne: “Yes captain.”

As Kaylee examines the open panel, Zoe, Mal and River watched. Mudd was tied up laying on the floor.
Kaylee moves the mirror around to see what she could see. “This reminds me of what Wash and I did after Saffron shorted out our controls.”
River: “Kalyee. Stop.”
Kaylee, “River?”
River: “Is there a orange wire where you are looking?”
Kaylee: “Yes.”
River: “Do not touch it. I think it is bad.
“Do you see a green and yellow banded wire?”
Kaylee: “Yes.”
River: “I think that is where you need to look.”

Kaylee worked for a few minutes and then said, “Zoe, can you wiggle the upper right corner screw?”
Zoe bent down: “This one?”
Kaylee: “Remove that screw. Be prepared to stop”
Zoe and Kaylee worked together on the screw. Kaylee: “Wait. I think there's something there.”
She wiggled the mirrors around and asked for a second mirror.
Kaylee: “Best I can tell it's still save. Try the lower left screw slowly.”
Zoe backed it out some.
Kaylee: “Wait.” Kaylee stretched out and touched something.”
River: “Wait.”
Kaylee: “I'm stopped.”
River: “Do you see a small brass colored tab between the two screws?”
Kaylee worker her mirrors a moment. “Yes I think it is folded maybe with two tan wires.”
River: “Yes. Can you cut both tan wires at once?”
Kaylee wiggled some more. “Yes.”
River: “Cut them.”
Kaylee: “Captain can you hand me the diags?”
Mal: “The what?”
Kaylee: “Diagonal cutters.”
Mal: “Saw them and said, “Here.”
Kaylee: “Thanks.”
River: “Do one of the two tan wires run to a board?”
After a moment, Kaylee: “Yes. I can't tell where the other goes.”
River: “I think the one you just cut was an anti-tamper switch. I'm not sure if there is a timer. The board is part of the detonator circuit but there might be something else.
“Do you see anything that looks like putty?”
Kaylee: “No. Let me look some more. Can we remover the access panel yet?”
River: “I don't think so.”
Kaylee pulled herself out of the panel next door, changed positions and slide back in. “Ah. Where's my mirror? Oh there.
“I do not see any putty … but … maybe … huh. I found something around the two remaining screws that look a little … maybe damp?”
She moved her arm a little.
River: “Wait!”
Kaylee froze.
River: “Is there a small spider's web like something near the wet spot?”
Kaylee: “Yes.”
River: “Are there an LED or display around there?”
Kaylee: “No.”
River: “Mal, I think we need to talk to Jay and Humperdink. I think the sabotage is safe for now.”
Mal: “Zoe, could you ask Jay and Hump to come here? Val, Jayne, you are on security – replace Jay and Hump.”

Having explained the problem to Jay and Hump, Hump said that he thought that Mal needed to remove himself to reassure the crew. The unexplained reason for Hump to ask was that Mal had had a bad time to start with and he needed to step back from the problem for a moment.
Mal walked into the common area: “Hi. Kaylee, River, and Zoe found a problem in the passageway. It is not completely fixed but it is almost there.
“The stowaway has not said anything so I call him Mudd. Mudd set at least one bomb to damage the ship. I thought the was clean but apparently we missed one or had not gotten to the area. We'll need to try to figure out how we missed it later to make sure we do not have an issue, we as crew, can fix.
“I believe that he had intended to set the charges and get off the ship before he was noticed. With our hustle to get into space before the bad weather he might not have complete the task or could not get out without being seen. Another item to be verified later.
“Since he had stuff with him when we found him, he might not have completed the job.”
Inara: “How are you?”
Mal: “Hump gave me a mild sedative. I am tired right now and I think I'll lie down for a little bit when we're done here. Questions?”
No questions were asked but Mal thought there were some. Just not important at the moment.
Zoe opened the door behind Mal: “All done captain. Hump suggested you lie down.”
Mal: “Zoe, you're in charge.”
Zoe: “Yes sir.”
Inara followed Mal off the bridge and into her shuttle.

Mal: “Inara, I almost got you killed.”
Inara: “No you did not. Who ever hired Mudd did. I think the sedative is working.”
Mal: “Maybe you're right.”
Inara helped Mal get off his outer cloths and she got comfortable. They laid down together And just took comfort in each others arms.

----

The com: “Inara? Are you there?” came Kaylee's voice.
Mal woke up and got to the com as quietly as he could: “Kaylee. I'm here.”
Kaylee: “Hi cap'n. Are you OK?”
Mal: “Yes. Still waking up.”
Kaylee noticed his under shirt so she was relieved to not have interrupted them. “Inara?”
From across the shuttle: “I'm awake.”
Mal: “She's up also. What's up?”
Kaylee: “We got the charge disabled. Jay had to cut the old one to disable it properly. We got a spare though. I did't know if you wanted a report or not so's I left you rest for about two hours.”
Mal: “Thanks Kaylee. I needed it. I'll be out in a little bit to get a report.”
Kaylee: “OK cap'n. I guess you'd like some coffee?”
“Thanks.”

Mal left first not needing to fuss over his minimal clothing as Inara did. As he walked into the kitchen: “Hold a minute until I've had something to drink.”
Hump: “Don't drink until I have you vitals.”
Mal nodded.

Hump said as Inara flowed into the room with her normal grace: “Mal, you can drink now. Your blood work is much better. You really need a rest.”
Mal looked up at Hump as he took a sip of coffee: “Thanks. I feel a lot better. Are we good for business now?”
Hump: “Yes.”
Mal: “With Kaylee here, do we need River for this? He shook his head, I assume River is on the bridge?”
Zoe: “Between Kaylee and I, I do not think we need River at the moment. We can call if need be.”
Mal nodded again.
Everyone sat down around the eating table except River and Jayne. Jayne was watching Mudd.
Zoe explained the sometime tedious details of what happened after Mal had left.
Jay: “The bomb was a real doosie. Hump and I think it was an advanced model but not a military device.
“There were parts for two more in his kit. Only enough explosive for one more. We had found that clay in the engine room when we caught him.”
Mal: “How sure are you that we found them all?”
Jay: “There might be more bombs but they are fractional odds I think.”
Mal: “Fractional odds?”
Jay: “Yes. Less than one in a hundred.”
Mal: “Ah.”
Mal got up and walked to the com: “River. What's the closest port?”
River: “Melkier – seven days. Dresden is a little over eight.”
Mal said to the com: “Thanks.
“Fractional odds huh? What about turning back to Saint Albans?”
River: “About 36 hours. I think we might have a delivery penalty doing that.”
Mal: “You're right there. Out.”
As Mal considered his options, he returned to the table and sat: “Zoe?”
Zoe: “Take our chances sir.”
Mal : “Hump?”
Hump: “Take our chances sir.”
Mal: “Anyone disagree?”
After a few moments with no response, Mal said, “We go on. We'll need a round the clock guard for Mudd. Wish we had a brig.”
Jay: “I'll ask about one.”
Mal: “No. Well, maybe. I hate to eat up cargo space.
“Val, set up a watch schedule for Mudd will ya?”
Val : “Will do , sir.”

Serenity sped on to Dresden.

----

Gwen woke to find something on top of her and she could not breath. She thought she heard, “Don't kill her, gag her and tie her up.”
Another: “She's awake. You do it if you're so good.”

Simon thought he heard something as he woke from the dregs of sleep.
Another someone: “I got the squinty one.”
“Get the kero on the records.”
“We gotta burn it.”
“UH!”
Simon grabbed his gun. He moved the curtain that was his door back a little.
There was a stranger standing with his side to Simon. He aimed. “CAAARRRCK.” as his pistol fired. The man when down screaming.
He went to Gwen's room and caught the man behind the knees.

Gwen felt herself starting to gray out. Then the weight came off her and she gasped for air. She saw Simon and tried to nod. He turned with the gun and left.
She heard a shot. She grabbed her gun. There was yelling and the sound of wood breaking.
By the time she got into the hall, she heard “I think that's everyone”. It sounded like Deputy Rock.
She spoke up: “There's one here in the hall and one in my room.”
Goldarn was there in a moment.
Goldarn and Simon approached to take charge.
Simon: “Gwen, call the sheriff’s office. Tell them what's happened. Tell them we'll need help. Wayne's been shot as well as three of the perpetrators and two deputies.
“Let them know we're going to need help and it they have someone who can nurse or triage, we can really use the help.”
Gwen: “Simon, are you hurt?”
Simon: “Just banged up a little. We're going to have some emergency surgery. Jay's in bad shape.”
Gwen called the sheriff’s office and then another wave number.
The next hours were hectic as Simon, Gwen, Goldarn and a healer who was the town's regular “medical worker” worked hard on the injured.

Wayne, two deputies and one perp were very serious and Simon tried his hardest. Wayne died on the table as did one of the deputies. The other deputy was iffy.
Larsit, the healer, has patched up Goldarn and Gwen when there was time between surgical needs. Two deputies, who had been “the cavalry” were bandaged but not hurt badly. Deputy Rock had his arm in a sling. Simon told her he'd jammed it on a door and should use the sling to rest his arm for a day or two.

Sheriff Bourne: “I'm golram sorry about this. I've got three of the perps in jail. I'll deputize a few more for your protection.”
Gwen: “Thanks. If it is a show of force, that's fine but I've a replacement coming in.”
Sheriff Bourne looked confused. He started to say something but Simon beat him to it: “Gwen?”
Gwen: “Goldarn is this place secure?”
Goldarn: “I'll double check.”
He looked all over the office: “Except for the wounded deputy, yes. The deputy is out like a light.”
Gwen: “Sheriff, this is highest confidential to be told to no one else without my or Simon's permission. OK?”
Sheriff Bourne: “Yes.”
Gwen: “I'll tell you what I can.
“A few months ago, almost four I guess, there was an attack on Areal. I can not get into the details.
“The result was that Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his crew joint by some Alliance operatives joined forces to try to find facts about the strange attack.
“Wayne, Goldarn, myself and Simon are concerned by the fringe healthcare. But it is a cover also.
“Except for Simon who is on the Serenity crew. Jay was the head of our three man crew. I am now.”
Simon: “You've got a replacement?”
Gwen: “Yes. I made a report. I asked for a replacement and another gun hand.”
Simon: “Yes. Good thinking. Anything else?”
Gwen: “I recommended the report be forwarded to Serenity. Nothing else.”
Simon nodded: “How are you holding up?”
Gwen: “I suspect once we get this meeting over, I'm going to fall apart. That's the first time I killed anyone. Let's try to hurry this up. I don't know how long I'm good for.”
Sheriff Bourne look stunned and confused.
Simon: “Sheriff, I'd like to close for the day. I've had an almost all nighter in surgery and Gwen will not be good for a while.”
Gwen: “Maybe Larsit can work here today for the illnesses he can handle.”
Sheriff Bourne: “I'll ask. I think we can work something out.”

Goldarn: “Hey, Gwen! There's a fellow out here I think you should talk to.”
Simon: “Bring him back here! Sheriff, if you will excuse us a moment, I may be able to answer some of you questions. Gwen, you need to ta....”
Gwen: “No. I woke up with a man on top of me trying to smother me. I don't want to be alone right now.”
Sheriff Bourne: “I'll see if Nanny Lan can come over while you're taking care of your business.”
Simon: “Thanks Sheriff.”

In a moment, a soft looking man was escorted in by Goldarn.
The man passed over an item that Gwen took and plugged into one of her own. She passed it back to him. He nodded.
The hat came off and the coat and a woman appeared: “I'm Enswal.”
Gwen was starting to shake.
Simon: “Gwen killed her first time a few hours ago after someone tried smother and kidnap her.” Enswal looked at Gwen whose only response was a thumbs up.
Enswal took the two items apart, pocketed one and returned the other to Gwen.
Simon: “For the moment, if you could look after Gwen, I'll see about the rest. Wayne was died in surgery.”
Once again, Enswal looked at Gwen and got a thumbs up.
Enswal: “I'll look after her.”
Simon: “I'll get Gwen a mild sedative to reduce the shakes. The best would be sleep for her. I think until we get this settled with the Sheriff's office, she should be awake.
“Once you're sure, I'll probably need you for other things as well. Are you medically trained?”
Enswal: “I'm a para-doctor.”
Simon: “That's good to know. Gwen, do you need someone other than yourself on your team to be in the talks with the Sheriff?” The thumbs up again.

Alternate arrangements were made and operations slowly got back to normal. There were workers removing the kerosene soaked wood. The damaged back door was being rebuilt.

----

Serenity was two days from Dresden.
Mal looked at the message. The code was confirmed as being from Gwen.
Mal: “Zoe, River. Could you come up to the bridge please.”
When they arrived they knew something was up. Zoe turned to close the door.
Mal: “I've received a short message from Gwen. There's been an attack on the Aid Station. Best I can tell there were 6 killed. Four during or after surgery. This includes Wayne, three perpetrators, and two deputies.”
Mal paused for that to settle.
“Simon, Gwen, and Goldarn are alive. I'm not sure of their condition. Gwen apparently sent this before much had been determined.
“A prestaged reinforcement is with the aid station now.
“Apparently this was not the first attack. Simon and Gwen were attacked on the street s few weeks ago with nothing but a scare. It might not have been related she says.”
Zoe: “How much more do we know?”
Mal: “Not much.”
River: “Could Mudd's attack be connected to these on Paradiso?”
Mal: “No way to confirm at the moment. Gwen said this short report was being sent to Who also.”
Zoe: “Should we accept penalties and head to Paradiso?”
Mal: “Gwen said not to. River, would you pilot. I need to let everyone know.”
River: “Sure.”
Zoe: “I'll round up the crew.”

----

Mal completed his report: “If I could, I'd head for Paradiso. Gwen says not to. Those of you who have worked with her, can she handle the job or should I forget the cargo and head there.”
Jay: “Gwen has good instincts. I'd back her.”
Humperdink: “I would suspect Who of doing something. If you did not show up when his action takes place, it would separate you from being involve. I think op-sec is more important.”
Mal: “Anyone else with a comment?”
Jayne: “We need to go in guns blazing.”
Val: “Anyone else with a SERIOUS comment?”
Mal: “Serenity's not armed, Jayne.”
Jayne: “Well we need to add a rocket launcher at least.”

Mal looked at the people around the table: “We'll deliver the goods to Dresden and then run to the aid station. Since we might be being watched, we won't run flat out. No need for attracting attention.
“However, with Mudd and the Aid station attacks, I'd like to stage some small hand weapons around the ship so if a Mudd like incident happens again, we have access to weapons even if we are not carrying. I think carrying weapons outside for a day or two before to a day or two after a planet fall is indicated.
“Jayne. Head that up. If we do not have weapons on board, make a list. I'll see about purchasing some. And Jayne, no grenades.”

----

With everyone packing arms, Serenity looked a little like an armed camp or warship. No problems occurred at Dresden. A passenger booked passage to Paradiso. There did not seem to be anything unusual about him.

When they landed at Paradiso a few days later, there was an unclaimed suit case on board. When they opened it, there were some handguns in it and a note “M. Sorry. W.”

----

When the loading bay ramp opened on Paradiso, Simon, Gwen and Sheriff Bourne were the only ones to greet Serenity.
Mal looked to Simon first: “You OK doc?”
Simon: “Yes.”
Mal looked to Gwen: “You OK?”
Gwen: “It was rough the first day or two. It was my first kill. I'm much better now, I've asked to tag along with Simon a lot. He's been a great help.”
Mal: “Sheriff?
Sheriff Bourne: “The perpetrators have been turned over for interrogation.”
Mal: “I've another one I want to get off my ship. He tried to sabotage it.
“Jayne,” he yelled back, “Get Mudd.”
Sheriff Bourne: “Earth that was?”
Mal: “Yes.”
Sheriff Bourne saw a few confused looks: “Back on Earth that was at the end of a failed civil war, the loosing side had an assassin kill the leader of the winning side. The assassin's escape failed but he had to stop and get his wounds fixed. The doctor was wrongly charged with knowing about the treason and killed. The doctor's name was Mudd.”
Mudd was now down the ramp. A box of evidence was there also.
Gwen: “Sheriff, can you hold this thing ...” pointing at Mudd, “... until someone can pick him up?”
Mal saw a little uncertainty when Bourne responded yes.
Mal: “How about we stay for a few days. We've been on ship for almost a month with not much shore leave. I'd like to see if I can find a cargo here also.”
Sheriff Bourne: “That'd help.”
Mal: “Done.”

----

Mal stepped back as Kaylee scurried up to Simon and gave him a big hug and kiss. Exuberant Kaylee gave Gwen a hug also.
River walked up quietly to Mal: “I sort of wish they knew about each other. Maybe Shepard Book was right though.”
Mal responded: “They'll work it out or not. Book was always seemed to know things. Not always right but well worth listening to.”
River: “Yes. Maybe it will work out for you and Inara.”
Mal: “I hope so. I'm gonna try hard.”
Inara had just walked up and took Mal's hand: “We both will.”
River smiled.

Mal walked over to Sheriff Bourne.
Mal: “Do you happen to know what a trail drive is?”
Sheriff Bourne: “Yes. Would you like to bring in Serenity's crew to Paradiso?”
Mal: “Yes. I also need a watch on her. We had about 4 hours on Saint Albans and about 12 hours on Dresden. I think we all need a break. I just do not want to let them go with out a plan.”
River: “Mal.” and she pointed.

Simon walked up: “The militia is about here. They'll secure Serenity. I had assumed you would be wanting to give everyone on ship some leave?”
Mal smiled: “Good crew.” as he looked at about 15 horse mounted armed men with similar hats.
Simon looked at Mal: “It sounds like both of us have tales to tell.”
Mal: “Sounds like. I assume you want to show off improvements in the aid station and have suggestions for the next set up.”
Simon: “Yes. And a few other items.”
Mal: “Ah.”
