Hey guys,

I'm writing a research paper on Firefly and its genres, and I am focusing on the enormous fanbase that Firefly has. In short: I would like to see a discussion in which Firefly fans discuss the genres they think are corporated into the series and why.

There's a lot of literature on Firefly's genres, for example in this book "Investigating Firefly and Serenity: Science Fiction on the Frontier" (edited by Rhonda V. Wilcox and Tanya R. Cochran), there are different articles about the genres. For example: in "The Alliance isn't Some Evil Empire", it is discussed that Joss Whedon himself noted that the series is a Western Noir, being located in the combined world of horror, science fiction, and Western. (Sutherland, 2010, p. 89)

However, I'm very curious what YOU all think about the genres in Firefly, and I hope that you will contribute as much as possible to this discussion! Your opinions are of great value for my research!

Thanks in advance :)

Sophie

My first thought was noir, with Western and SciFi infused.

But I have come to find that Drama is accurate, albeit not melodrama. The scriptwriting is too well put together to avoid the drama label.

Space, non-alien type.

Distopian.

Culture-clash, heavy on the frontier.

Anti-establishment, for those who don't understand it well.

Strong female protagonists. (Inara and Zoe)

Not sure if those are genres per se, but not sure how picky you are.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Drama. Comedy. Science Fiction. Western. Mystery. Romance. Pretty much in that order too.

Thank you for your input! As you already mention, not all of it can be considered as genres. However, I can definitely use it to give an insight in what's a much broader discussion. Basically anything is useful, haha :)

Thanks for your comment! Could you maybe explain a little more as to why you consider these genres to be the main genres in Firefly, and why in that order?
