America loves a winner!

On Netflix.

Well, started to , at least. Didn't get very far, before I decided to call it a night.

So far, from what I've seen, Bill Maher makes some fine points. It was interesting to see him discuss , with his mom and sister, on how their family went to church, and then just stopped going. Bill's a bit older than I am, but I can still relate to the time period in which he grew up.

The trucker's church scene was a bit tough to watch. Merely asking questions ,in certain areas, is tantamount to mocking what others hold to be true. And with some, like the truckers shown, I'd have to think that they NEED something supernatural to hold on to, to make it through their day, their lives. It's really tough for them to try to alter their view on such matters. And that must go further for those who grow up in 3rd world countries, where anything from the outside is 'bad', or 'evil'.

Anyone watch the whole movie ? Is it worth the time, or does he just carry on, making valid points, and mocking beliefs, through out ?

WHOZIT

Maher's little show draws about 1 million viewers on a good night, he's not a important voice in anything. Anything he does is a waste of time, that flick was him just grinding an axe.

Being more concise than Bill Maher, Andrew Sullivan wrote
Quote:

I have a new term for those on the fringes of the religious right who have used the Gospels to perpetuate their own aspirations for power, control and oppression: Christianists. They are as anathema to true Christians as the Islamists are to true Islam. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianism
There's no need to finish the movie. Bill Maher ends it with:
Quote:

The hour is getting very late to be able to indulge in having key decisions made by religious people, by irrationalists, by those who would steer the ship of state not by a compass, but by the equivalent of reading the entrails of a chicken. George Bush prayed a lot about Iraq, but he didn't learn a lot about it. Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking. It's nothing to brag about. . . .

If you belonged to a political party or a social club that was tied to as much bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, violence, and sheer ignorance as religion is, you'd resign in protest. To do otherwise is to be an enabler, a mafia wife, for the true devils of extremism that draw their legitimacy from the billions of their fellow travelers.

If the world does come to an end here, or wherever, or if it limps into the future, decimated by the effects of religion-inspired nuclear terrorism, let's remember what the real problem was. We learned how to precipitate mass death before we got past the neurological disorder of wishing for it.

That's it. Grow up or die. http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Religulous

While he makes some valid points on one side of the coin, those who'd claim righteousness for their political decisions on the other side of the coin are just as bad. Communists / Socialists will often claim giving the poor money is the right thing to do. But Jesus also said render unto Caesar which is Caesars, and to God which is Gods.

Yes, we should help the poor, but not via govt, and with force of govt tyranny.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen
