GLORIANA

I've been lurking here for awhile, shocked to realize I actually registered here over three years ago (still can't tell if I even posted anything before this...)

It's getting harder to mingle with Browncoats online, isn't it? Way back when, I could watch the series and go on posting binges like the dickens with more devotees than you could shake a stick at. Now I wander around the net like "Hey...somebody wanna discuss whether or not they think the 3D imaging room in 'Ariel' is just a redress of the 'Shindig' ballroom set? Anybody? Hello?".

I might be the queen of finding awesome Firefly discussion threads that haven't been posted in for nine months to a year. I think it's true there is that weird phenomenon where Firefly enthusiasm bubbles up out of nowhere on the net, then disappears as fast as it arrived. I've tried formulating an algorithm to predict these spurts of activity, but unfortunately I have zero understanding of advanced mathematics and hence, less than zero ability to form algorithms. Just hoping maybe I'll find myself in the middle of a good Firefly-side chat if I get lucky.

Right now, I've got a fellow Browncoat visiting me from out of town and we've gotten stuck in that infinite "Watch series, Watch BDM, Refuse to Accept it's The End, Re-Watch Series, Re-Watch BDM, Re-refuse to Accept it's The End, Re-Re-Watch Series...." loop of madness. We probably need some kind of intervention at this point, with loved ones reading us letters about how our obsession with Firefly has ruined our relationships with them, but we're probably going to pretend we don't and write fan fiction instead. That's reasonable, right?

At any rate, hello to everyone on the boards here (lurkers included). I guess only time will tell if we actually will get into some good discussions about whether or not the 3D imaging room in 'Ariel' is just a redress of the 'Shindig' ballroom, but I hope we might! (I just noticed it for the first time a couple of days ago, and it blew my mind in a really stupid, stupid way).

WISHIMAY

WELCOME Gloriana!
I lurked for quite a spell myself, so congrats on dipping your toes in finally...

I think that we for sure get surges in visitors when FF or Serenity gets on things like when they run it on new channels or when they put it on Netflix, and then again when the actors are in movies and people say "Where have I seen him before" and go check it out further... Sometimes it's because there's been a deal or special on the disks or even Browncoat events will trigger a new wave of people... The one constant is that it never really does stop- TEN YEARS LATER, it's still plugging along...

I'll have to check out the imaging room/ ballroom thing...I'm not one for noticing backgrounds though. Never did know Wash didn't have a stick in that one scene... I usually focus on the people and the acting more...

Have you lurked in both ends of the site, or just the main? If you like friendly banter, there's chat, and if you like not-quite-so-friendly politicking there's "Real World Events Discussions" I'd recommend being armed and wearing full riot gear in there though. I'll pass ya out another virtual Browncoat and Jayne Hat, it may help shield you, should you wander in there ;)

NEWOLDBROWNCOAT

Welcome to the party.

I agree with Wish about waves of newcomers.

Usedtabe you could say, "So and So was one of the folks who came here after the Movie", "X joined after seeing Chuck", "Blank came around from Castle."

Not so much waves lately, but a steady trickle, maybe 1 or 2 a week.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the site Gloriana. Glad you decided to come out of lurk mode. ;)

I think chatter on the net has dropped off, but I imagine that many are still around, lurking, waiting to see what, if anything, comes down the road. I'd say a fair number were disappointed that the BDM did not get a sequel and that the story didn't continue in some form or another other than the far too infrequent comic books.

Still, we browncoats are a stubborn bunch, so we're going nowhere. We might fly off the radar, but never doubt we're still here.

Thanks for the head's up about the chat, I didn't even notice it was there, just went straight to the message boards (and thanks for the warm welcome!)

My other half was recently asking my friend and I how we can watch the series as frequently as we do, and I told him it's so weird but we've watched it countless times and yet constantly find new themes or subtext we never even noticed before (as well as those little set details). It still astounds me how truly crafted the stories are, and how lovingly they were crafted. I've wondered if the day will come when I'll tire of it, but it just hasn't happened yet. Not even close.

I just finished reading through the reviews for the entire series on the A.V. Club, I was so bummed I was late to that party. I'm sure most of the folks around here saw them ages ago, but if you haven't, they're a great read (especially the comments section, awesome insights and some truly hilarious Browncoat humor tucked in the folds).

I agree the Browncoats are a stubborn bunch, in the best way possible. I know it has been said countless times by others, but there's just something indescribably special about Firefly fans. I've met plenty of people who share interest in a lot of the shows/movies I watch and we have great conversations, but it's always a completely different experience when I meet a fellow Browncoat out in the world. I probably don't even need to describe it, y'all know exactly what I mean!
