Another thing that makes me wonder...
In 'Serenity' the shuttle folds into the hull of Serenity when docking. In 'Trash' and 'Out of Gas' they launch from the wings of the ship.
I may be right here, but just to hear from others...
Do the shuttles slide out from the hull when ready to launch? In 'Out of Gas' Mal tells Jayne to prep the shuttle, so is this when they extend out from the hull to prepare for launch?
It seems the shuttles dock directly into the side of the bay. Or did I just miss it when they docked on the wing, and then folded into the hull?

Or is this all a dumb curiosity on my part?

If you watch when Inara lands in the pilot, you'll see that it settles into a "tray" and then is retracted against the side of the ship. I think there are some other scenes showing this too, I just don't remember where.

In "Out of Gas" they had already been extended when the scene that showed them leaving started.

Kind of a cool feature, I think :)

The shuttles rest on racks that retract into the hull somewhat, when not in use. When launching or retrieving, you extend the rack. When done, you retract.

The racks sit above, if not on the wing. Watch how they launch in Out of Gas again.

"Wash, where is my damn spaceship?"

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Just as Drakon says, the shuttles dock on a retractable rack that pulls them into the side of Serenity for docking.

It appears to me that the racks themselves move just above the wing, not on them.
