Dear folks;
Really don't know how to approach this subject, but I will try.
This is a capitalistic/materialistic world that TV and Hollywood lives in so try a new approach: Donate money for a new movie or series.
If Firefly has a million fans, then $100.00 apiece can be donated by each fan with the express idea of funding a movie or a series. One hundred million bucks is big money for either. Wouldn't you like to see Josh Weaton with that kind of creative power?
Afund could be set up with Wheaton named as managing executive and you have a winning combo. If these government idiots can spend over $300,000,000 on a stupid inuragual ball with your tax dollars, then we, the people can do them one better.
If you can raise money for charity, go to S.F. and spend all that money on travel and trinkets, spend hours writing scripts that will never be visualized, or waste money on filthy habits; then PUT your money where your mouth is. Create your own PBS with something you truly love.
Further; do not make this a one time thing. Continue to contribute over the years and suff the establishment's own failure down its' mouth while feeding it what it wants.
Get this thing started, get a lawyer to draw up a funding foundation or corp, and I will personally donated the first $1000.00.
It took Obaama three weeks to raise $25 million and he had to deal with the election committee funding laws. You don't! Is this any less important to you hardcore fans?
Get the word out. Are that many hardcores?
Let's findout.

I'll let someone else talk about your plan, but just quickly I'd like to say that the guy's name is Joss Whedon. Just so you know. Joss. Whedon. It's synonymous with God around these parts.

It's a good idea and intention, but may run into a myriad of complications. What "we" need to find out is what it would take to establish the fund and who would run and maintain it.

More info is needed before any Browncoat would consider such a venture. My guess is that the powers that be in Hollywood would definitely sit up and take notice. Serenity was made with $39M, so $100M would definitely give us Parts 2 & 3.

I propose a partnership with Universal and the fund would be in order. We would need an entertainment attorney, that could be expensive.
Anywho, shiny idea.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

This idea has been proposed at least once every three or four months around here, twice by individuals who went to the trouble of creating websites and setting up accounts to receive money. Both were informed that such a venture would not be feasible due to the legality of rights issues with the various studios and Joss. Both were forced to return any monies collected.

Granted, it seems logical from our perspective but we aren't knowledgeable about how things actually work in Hollywood. Plus, how could we know someone would not be siphoning off some of those funds for their own gain. I consider myself an honest person but I'm also not sure I could be trusted with such a sum of money. How about you?

Pardnership with Univeral????? That's letting them have the cake before the party and expecting them to be honest!
No! This thing must be set up by a business attorney, absolutly not an entertaintment attorney. This is for love and dedication and must be protected from the first moment of ti's birth.
As a foundation, corporatation, or LLC; it can be set up seperately from them and then make an offer to fund filming and allow distribution rights.
When you voice concerns about accountability, a share holding corporation is the way to go. Let's face it, are you truly worried about someone stealing your $100.00? If they do, then write off your taxes. Win-Win.
Is there that little trust among fans?
I offered this idea hoping that someone would pick it up and run with it. If no one will, then I might just spend the money to see if I can set something up myself.

Could I be trusted? I am not a communist. I would expect a salary approved by the stockholders.
Hell, I would give up my medical practice in a New York minute to be a part of something that could change the face of fan power in entertainment the way this will!!!

SSG mentioned that having more movies made by means of direct contribution is impossible due to legality and ethical issues, but it as well as other petition drives do keep arising periodically. I think the only possibility of success in one of these drives would be if an agreement between Joss Whedon, Universal, the actors involved, and Firefly’s/Serenity’s fans through documentation was made so that a movie would be made if a certain benchmark was achieved like a certain level of sales of a certain product.

For this project to happen I think enough fans would need to buy at least one share of common stock so that they could table a motion at the Universal Studios to make a Serenity 2 movie if a predetermined number of a certain product such as Serenity’s Blue Ray edition were purchased. Then I think some coordination between the several Brown Coat clubs could possibly achieve the next link in this chain by going to the conventions to show Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and possibly Alan Tudyk, as well as Ron Glass that a project would begin if a certain benchmark were achieved and ask them if they would support that project through participation if it were achieved.

I think a copy of the agreement should be brought to the conventions so the people mentioned before could take it home to study and decide with an understanding that a decision would be mailed to a central location. I think on the documentation given to the people listed above, it should also contain a way to contact someone if any questions arose. It might also be wise to have a copy of the agreement mailed to the people listed above in case they were not reached at the conventions but I do think the convention drive would be important as long as it weren’t intrusive so a buzz between the fans could help carry the project forward. I might be missing a few links in the chain I described in the fan participation of the making of a Serenity 2 movie, but a similar plan of action should be able to get the ball rolling and no such legality or ethical issues would arise. I think the purchase of common stock by the individual fans could also be coordinated by newsletters of the several active Brown Coat organizations so that while the stocks were individually owned they could still represent a unified effort.

Rallem, fans will never have enough stock to achieve what you want. Check out the cost if you don't believe me. To the other points you've made, check the archives for reasons why they won't work.

It takes one share of common stock to table a motion. I don't know if parlementary procedures are followed in a board room or not but if they do it takes a one more share of common stock to second the motion. I am not asking for fans to buy a controlling share of Universal to force them to bend to our will, because that wouldn't be neccessary. I think any corporation board of directors would want ot hear a potential money making proposal from just about anyone, let alone a stock holder. As far as me searching through the archives of this site why don't you just give me the bullet points as to why my other points of interest won't work. Please.

To be honest, I'd donate more than just a one-off $100 USD to see a new film or series, but I don't think the fans have the organisation or business skills to pull this off. If somebody wants to go consult a lawyer, spend hours in conferences with Universal or FOX execs and then have no further part in the films production except for feeding money into it, then that's up to them: it just doesn't seem likely.

This is my kind of thinking :)

How about a worker co-op? Then all get one vote, no one can take over regardless of their shares, and the profit/surplus=big damn series or movie.
(And it's much, much more sustainable than a inc. model)

The world is full of extremely rich (and unfortunately sometimes greedy and lacking in vision) douchebags that do not much work for the money.

The people can rally...the people can have vision...Firefly fans are giving to charities :)
That says a lot.
