Does anyone know the real story? I read that a scheduling conflict required Joss Whedon to replace her, and that's the official line. But on the DVD commentary for "Serenity," it definitely sounds like it was a talent/fit issue.

Just curious. :) I'm really glad she wasn't cast, for whatever reason!

Since Joss says in the Serenity commentary that it was a talent/fit issue, that's what I'd go with. I've seen some of the stuff she's done, and she couldn't possibly have pulled off Inara the way that Morena has.

I dunno, when it comes to cast changes, Joss has been less than honest in the past. Look at this seasons Cordelia mess, with Joss claiming one thing, Charisma and other cast/crew another. It'd be interesting to hear for sure what happened behind that, but like the Doyle incident, I doubt we ever will.

Too many different versions of what happened in each of the above cases to sort out the truth from the fiction.

I think rebecca is very hot and that's why she got to read for the role, but I can't for the life of me think of anything that she's ever acted in that I was impressed by. No offense rebecca! I'd still love to take you in my arms and give you a good smoochin'.

Was all of this before or after her legal troubles for that hit and run???

I can't imagine her as Inara either...it would be too distracting having seen her in other things (like Noxeema commercials!)

Well, these things always work out for the best one way or another: (yes, I am a DORK)

1) Charisma Carpenter originally was up for the role of Buffy

2) Dougray Scott originally was supposed to play Wolverine in the X-Men movies

I'm just happy they gave a relative newcomer a chance, in Morena's case.

This would have been well after the hit-and-run accident. It would actually be in character for Whedon, I think, to give her another chance to reclaim stardom.

I seem to recall that Joss Whedon always spoke glowingly about Sarah Michelle Gellar, when by most unofficial accounts, the entire cast and crew hated her guts.

Anyway, what he says on the DVD commentary (he says it during Inara's first entrance) is kind of cryptic, but he says he originally shot the scene with "another actress" and did so knowing he was going to have to reshoot it. But it wasn't common knowledge to the cast at the time.

It was interesting to hear on the DVD that she had been cast but didn't "work out," because the same thing happened to her on Dead Like Me last year (except there she left midway through the first season, in a way that made it seem like the decision was made halfway through the episode in question).

After, I think, half a day of filming (it wasn't more than two days), Rebecca Gayheart felt she wasn't right for the part, and she decided that she would like to abandon the role. Joss & Co. agreed, b/c they are agreed her work wasn't what they were looking for at all - she had been miscast.

Basically, it was Rebecca Gayheart's decision not to continue with the role, but everyone completely agreed.

That sounds very plausible. Thanks for the info! Since that entrance scene was originally filmed with Gayheart (Joss did it in singles so he could pop her out and put the new actress in), I'd still be really curious to see her scenes.

She can't be any good, but it would still be fascinating to me -- "what might have been."
