BLACKOUTNIGHTS

I used to collect comic books religiously, but not anymore. Primarily because the artwork is lacking; secondarily because the stories are boring. Still love the occasional graphic novel though.

I'm intrigued if Whedon's going to take on the X-Men - just to see what he does with those characters. However, it'll take precious time to write it, and I worry that Firefly will fall further into the realms of oblivion. Would I buy a Firefly comic? Possibly, but the sci-fi genre generally tends not to do well in comic form - with the possible exception of Star Wars which seems to do well in any form (though, personally, I've had about as much SW as I can stand. The last decent thing I liked about SW were Zahn's Heir to the Empire books. I hate the way people take a good thing and overkill it).

So, what do the rest of you think? X-Men or Firefly?

"Well, hello Mr. Fancy Pants."

HJERMSTED

For the past four years or so, Marvel has been pretty good about letting successful writers/artists from other comic companies (both indie and major)... even other mediums (TV writers)!... take over a title and play with the characters.

Michael Allred (of Madman fame) is drawing X-Statix (an X-Men spin-off). Grant Morrison (well known for his work at DC) has truly put a new spin on the X-Men universe.

J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5 creator/writer) has been writing one of the Spider-Man titles for a few years now with great results.

Whedon taking over an X-title (assuming it's a true rumor) indicates Marvel is continuing to take calculated risks with its properties in hopes of bringing cool stories to the cool pictures. Whedon, as some may remember, was hired to script doctor the first X-Men film so he is familiar with the characters.

I personally love the idea of reading Whedon's take on the X-Men (a comic universe I have been enjoying since roughly 1980).

HUMBLE

with the propagation of comics-to-movies, joss could be strategizing on making a comic book of firefly and then building a large fan base from that end. moving on to tv series again. wouldn't put it past him. he's very tenacious and rightly so.
