I thought that Mal had mentioned that he thought that the shuttles were added and not originally part of the ship. I figured he said it to either Zoe or Inara in the flashbacks in Out of Gas. But I just watched it on the DVD and either there was no mention of it or it was somewhere else and I missed it.

Am I making things up in my head again or does anyone else remember this and if so from what ep?

Thanks

Don't think that it was ever mentioned explicitly.

However, if you look at the scene in OOG, with Mal's first glance at Serenity in the shipyard, you'll notice that the shuttle bay is empty. Suggests that they were added some (reltively short) time after he closed on her.

Found it. It was in the shooting script for Out of Gas:

Quote:

INARA
What's her range?

MAL
Standard short. She'll break atmo from a wide orbit.
Get you where you need to go, bring you back home again.

INARA
This shuttle -- it seems newer than the rest of the ship.

MAL
My understanding is this airlock was added some years
back. Certain modifications and improvements been made
over the course of the years.

INARA
Mmmm.

MAL
But she's space worthy. Like the rest of Serenity.
