It's a great idea we should definitely do one, though I think the panel of judges would have to be people who haven't read that many fan fic's cause then they would just choose the big most famous ones.

There is/was 'The Strawberries: Blue Sun Firefly fan fiction awards.' It's an annual event that has been advertised on this site in the past.

I think that the site was no longer updated after 2005 though, or voting had moved over to Live Journal or something. I'm not really sure what happened, or if the contest's still active.
