Mal-Type Character in Sci-Fi Movie

I was watching the Sci-Fi Channel Movie Savage Planet last night, and I noticed one of the main characters was very Mal-esque. He wore a brown long sleeve button up shirt with the trademark Mal suspenders and and old style pistol on his side like Mal's which he prefer over the modern laser weapons saying "this one doesn;t need batteries". Coincidence, I think not.
