I've noticed that a lot of people are talking about ways the operative from Serenity could be brought back to the story when it is continued. Final showdown with Mal, dying while saving the crew for redemption, etc. Am I alone in thinking that none of this would be possible because he's dead before (or just after) the movie ends? Here's why:

The movie starts (basically) with him giving an opening speech about how people who have failed as completely as the doctor used to commit seppuku. He completely fails to bring River in and beyond that fails to keep the secret she had from leaking out. The movie ends with him saying "you won't" to Mal in regards to Mal ever seeing him again. This seems like very strong evidence to me that he killed himself.

Thoughts anyone?
