No matter what your feelings are about Serenity, there is one big way we can boost visiblity of the series. One of the favorite sites about TV series is Jump the Shark ( http://tinyurl.com/j3ih ). For those that don't know Jump the Shark is devoted to that moment when a TV series did something bizarre and fans lost all respect for the series (the term comes from the scene in the TV series Happy Days when Fonzie jumped a shark on a surfboard and lost all credibility from the website's creator). I've seen this site menioned The are a few elite shows ( http://tinyurl.com/deyh4 ) that have never jumped:

Quote:

The Simpsons
Police Squad!
The Bob Newhart Show
WKRP in Cincinnati
The Prisoner
Magnum, P.I.
The Tick
Barney Miller
The Rockford Files
Homefront
The Larry Sanders Show
Freaks and Geeks
The Dick Van Dyke Show
The Odd Couple
Fawlty Towers
The Critic
The Young Ones
St. Elsewhere

Now Firefly is mentioned ( http://tinyurl.com/apvuh ) but it has about a 60+% ratio of "Never Jumped". I'm guessing that a good 90% ratio (though some of them have less than that) should kick it into "Never Jumped". What would that take? I'm guessing if at least 317 Browncoats who have never voted over there (you are not allowed to vote more than once) do the good deed and vote we could get Firefly into that elite. Note that only The Prisoner would be considered a sci-fi series on that list and this would certainly place Firefly above Star Trek, B5, etc.

So go to Jump the Shark's voting location
( http://www.jumptheshark.com/form.htm ), scroll down, select Firefly from the first set of shows, choose "Never Jumped" from the Categories list. Say "never", "never jumped" (or something like that) in when did it jump and in "Other Comments" state your love of the show.

Firefly is the best sci-fi series ever made and the rest of the world should know it! BTW the biggest number of votes for "Never Jumped" is 1,592 for the Simpsons (I think we can beat that if we try).

Firefly never jumped the shark. Magnum PI never jumped the Shark? my god.

Thats a tough one beating The Simpsons. I don't think that can ever be done.

I want to thank everyone who have voted on Jump the Shark for Firefly. We're more than half-way to our new (and more reasonable) goal of 124 total votes of "never jumped". This will give us a good argument that we are at least as good as St. Elsewhere who has 123 votes of "never jumped" and much higher negative votes of having jumped.

This campaign will give a boost to Firefly viewing and will allow Firefly to join an elite company of eighteen other shows in the entire television universe never to have jumped the shark.

In addition to boosting the visibility of the show this will also server three other purposes:

1) Firefly will become the first science fiction show ever to be on the "Never Jumped" category. Quite an achievement because by its very nature science fiction shows tend to take many plot risks.
2) Ron Glass will be the first actor to be a regular cast member on two shows that "Never Jumped". Of course before he was on Firefly, Ron starred in "Barney Miller"
3) I believe Ben Edlund will the only producer AND writer for two "Never Jumped" shows. Remember Ben was also the creative genius behind "The Tick" one of the only two cartoons on the elite 18 list of "Never Jumped".

Please vote at http://www.jumptheshark.com/form.htm and if you have already voted get another Browncoat to do so also.

Also, if you saw and believe that Homefront, The Critic or The Larry Sanders Show did "Jump the Shark" please vote so. These three shows (which are on the "Never Jumped" list) all have substantially less total votes than Firefly and if their negatives creep us they will make Firefly look better. I strongly urge no one to vote against a show who hasn't seen those shows.

For instance I'm planning on voting against "The Critic" for instance on the "Day One" category because I saw the show and I thought Jay's son just wasn't funny and whenever it started getting into plot the obnoxiousness of Jay's character just didn't work for me. Every time Jay's son came on I had the reaction that you have watching Trident's daughter in the SpongeBob movie. However, I never had seen Homefront or Larry Sanders show enough to vote against them.

Hartmeister,

I went and voted for it not jumping and will go back and vote for jumping the shark for some of those other shows that have. Hope that helps our odds.

I copied and pasted your post and I'm going to send it out as an email to some 'coats that don't frequent our board as often as I do... is that ok? I hate to just do it without you saying it's ok, cuz I'm gonna use your words.. they are convincing!

Thanks....
Diane

I wouldn't worry about voting intentionally against other shows. I think voting against other shows will be perceived by others as trying to rig the results even if we are honest. Just vote for Firefly and check out some other shows and vote honestly (one way or another). Don't worry about the other shows in the "Never Jumped" category. Let's just encourage people who haven't voted to vote for Firefly.

BTW, I sent a message to the website but I haven't received any reply about the "Never Jumped" category. For those who don't know we ( http://www.jumptheshark.com/f/firefly.htm ) are now solidly "better" by almost any criteria than St. Elsewhere ( http://www.jumptheshark.com/s/stelsewhere.htm ).

If we don't get any response in a month from the website, I'll have some additional steps I'll ask people to take.
