So, I got an email this morning from AT&T Broadband saying that I was breaking their terms of service by having copywritten material available via IRC.

(I have some firefly eps and a couple of movies and some other miscellaneous stuff...)

They said if they caught me doing it again, they would immediately cancel my service.

Just an FYI. So, I used to serve for the cause, but I'm not about to go back to dial up.....

Yeah - it's the same as offering free versions of Microsoft Office XP or pirated software or bootlegged MP3s from your PC on a broadband connected system. Our broadband provider routinely hunts for IRC FServes, FTP servers, Web Servers, P2P servers (like NapServers) and Extranet VPN Clients (that you remote into work from your Home PC) and cuts off users who violate the Term of Service Agreement. They have two rates - residential and business ..... most people use residential without reading the fine print they cannot remote into work with their home PC or do major file sharing without switching to a $60/month more business rate connection. Copyright violation. You're just lucky AT&T didn't cut your access off right then and there like they did my neighbor (who was just doing VPN to his office).

Those damn terms & conditions are pages long! I don't know anyone who reads through the entire thing. I work for a company that is a big software provider, and it's a joke here in my group about how no one even reads the product description before installing, much less the licencing agreement.
