Did my tv's sound go out for a second, or did they take out Jayne saying "crotch"?

Not to my knowledge. It's not like "crotch" is such a bad word. Esp when later on they're showing all that gory blood! And now that I think about it, I was watching for the blooper in Our Mrs Reynolds (where you can see the camera man when Jayne gets his rainstick), and I think they cut that out too.

During Jaynestown they cut "Aw hell, I'll pinch ya." or "I could hurt you." or whatever Zoe's response is there. And I noticed a few other small cuts throughout the episode.

Perhaps this is the concession they make to have enough time to show their normal allottment of ads and the Serenity clips?

Well, small cuts is different than just silencing "crotch", and tonight's airing that one word was just silenced noticeably (I noticed it, and I wasn't even in the same room).

It wouldn't surprise me if there were minor cuts in the episodes, though... the last commercial break (the one with the movie previews) is not an original breakpoint, after all.

It's been done with reruns for a while. Especially with F*x. They've cut out a whole bunch of stuff from the reruns of Buffy to fit in more commercials. It's actually quite annoying to not hear some of the lines.
