Did anyone else catch the subtle change in the soundtrack music in the updated pilot? I liked the new soundtrack too, but I missed the more ambling sound of the original. Much of the music was from the soundtrack to David Lynch's "The Straight Story" done by Angelo Badalementi. I saw the movie a couple of years ago and liked the soundtrack so much I went out and bought it. So I was doubly pleased to hear it again when I downloaded the unaired pilot. Really interesting how the same music could be used for such radically different movies. Wonderful stuff. "The Straight Story" is a fantastic movie by the way, my favorite Lynch short of Twin Peaks.

I did notice the change, and quite frankly, the change sucked. I'm a big fan of the Firefly composer (I loved Cop Rock's score!), but, quite frankly, he doesn't quite measure up to Angelo Badalamente. There were a lot of things - disliked about the new edit, most notably the Zoe/Simon scene removal, and ESPECIALLY the change to the Inara/Book meeting in the shuttle. That shuttle scene where Inara was all "moral terpitude" was one of my favorite in the entire pilot! Though, they did manage to amp up the intensity of the reaver scene and I loved how they emphasized Mal's loss of faith at the battle of serenity (that part nearly makes up for my missing of the Inara/Book scene I mentioned earlier... In fact, Mal at the battle of serenity may have been my favorite Firefly moment yet). I wish everything could have been perfect in thenewedit, but the new stuff was great...

Wasn't some of the temp music in the original pilot from Clint Eastwood's UNFORGIVEN as well?

I don't think so, at least not that I recognized. I heard music from "The Stand", by W. G. "Snuffy" Walden (he's better known for the work he does on "The West Wing"); from "The Abyss", by Alan Silvestri; and a few others which I forget right at the moment. Who knows, there may well be some of "Unforgiven" in there as well...

History doesn't always repeat itself. Sometimes it merely shouts "Weren't you listening the first time?!?" and lets fly with a club.
