I'm no TV exec, but I'd have to believe it WOULD have an effect on Firefly.

That's one hour worth of void into which they have to drop a filler show or mid-season replacement. They'll probably drop Cops or some whatnot in there until they prep a mid-season show.

Logic'd say they'd drop their top filler into that spot. That means that they WOULDN'T have that in pocket to drop on top of Firefly. And FOX, as crazy as they are, wouldn't dump an unsure thing (Firefly) to replace it with an equally unsure thing.

OK -- maybe this is choppy logic -- but it works out in my head, and gives me hope. There are only so many shows they can reasonably cancel and replace per season, and we've already had one fall by the wayside....

FYI, The girls club's numbers were worse than FF on a share-to-share basis (the only comparison that's not apples to oranges.)

IMO, the cancellation is an OK thing for FF.

On the one hand, it means that Fox has to go to the bench (in the spirit of the baseball mea culpa above) for a replacement and they only have one "midseason" replacement drama, Keen Eddie. Less "subs" = more opportunity for FF to survive.

On the other hand, it goes to show that even the network's favorite drama creator isn't immune to the hook; Fox won't renew the show because it "likes" Joss Whedon.

All in all, the demise of girls club, the slight uptick in the ratings and the three episode script order bode well for FF. (I hope.)

Look what they did with shelving the $10 million pilot, which caused all kinds of trouble for the show; bad press, confusion about the story and the characters, not to mention, loads of bad karma for Fox. (Do you think the girls club fiasco resulted entirely from bad writing?

Though Whedon shows have a built-in audience, I don't think anyone disagrees that Firefly needs to grow its audience in order to get consistent positive ratings.
I honestly feel Monday night is a better place to grow an audience than Friday night is. If Fox wants to lure Friday night TV viewers away from "Americas Funniest Videos", the network will need to put something like American Idol 2 in that slot instead of a genre program like Firefly.
Putting Firefly, a strong drama with an excellent ensemble cast, after Boston Public (another strong drama with great acting... some would say) on a night when all potential viewers are home and watching TV just makes better sense to me.
Also, it's a good night to move Firefly to considering Sundays and Tuesdays are out.

I read somewhere that a lot of people were just disapointed with Girl's club in general, not only with just how it's ratings were fairing. A lot of people were complaining about it's characters and some of the things they said.

Yeah, but...

...if they move it to Monday nights, it'd go up against new episodes of Stargate: SG1 in January. These two shows draw significantly from the same fan base. I'm thinking FOX is even smart enough to catch that one.

(And I'm selfish. My wife works late, and, with only one 'tape' VCR left in the house, I can only record one show at a time to watch together later. If they move into the same time slot, TiVo here I come...)
