CYBERSNARK

Credit to the Zannen forums ( http://www.zannen.ca/node/275) for the scoop.

Okay, those of you who happened to be watching YTV's Bionix block way back in September might've seen the announcement: YTV was petitioning the CRTC for permission to launch an all-anime network aimed at over-18s.

The Bureaucrats have been gnawing on it since then, and now the word's out: The CRTC has approved the Anime Channel!
http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Decisions/2007/db2007-41.htm

As near as I can understand the bureaucratese, it looks like it'll be >65% anime (including various genres), <35% anime-related stuff (news, interviews, their usual on-the-floor coverage of cons, etc). No idea when the network will actually launch, but speculation is between Oct 07 (at the earliest) and Feb 08 (at the latest).

This is a historic moment for Canadian otaku. YTV again proves itself to be cooler than any other network in the country (sorry Space, but I'm still waiting for MST3K). I'm thinking they already have some licenses set up (I know they've announced Gundam Seed Destiny for March, but I'm confident it'll be in Bionix [as the original Seed was], probably replacing either FMA or InuYasha).

Hopefully SAC: 2nd Gig will finally be aired (it skewed too old for mainstream YTV, so we only got the first season).

LEGOLAD

Well, as a Canadian, I think this is good news. It's about time some anime geared towards an audience older than 10 got on mainstream Canadian TV.

Although I have no idea if I'll actually watch it, since I'm sure it will still be dubbed instead of subtitled. And I'm sorry, but anime dubs must contain the worst voice acting known to mankind. The only good dubs I've ever seen are on some of Miyazaki's films, where money and effort was actually put into them. The majority are almost unwatchably painful. Have you ever watched the dub of Ghost in the Shell? Wow. Just... wow. My friends and I were actually laughing out loud at it -- and I don't think that movie was meant to be a comedy.

On the other hand, if by some miracle they actually DID air the shows with subtitles... now that would be truly awesome. But one step at a time, I guess.
