Okay, being one of Miyazaki-sama's biggest fans, it was a no-brainer that I'd pick this up.

I just tried to watch it. Some of most beautiful, lush animation I've ever seen, a fun, dramatic treatment of my favourite fairy-tale with occasional flashes of humour ("That can't be good for the table."), and a beautifully-acted dub.

Then, at around scene 15 ("Loving the Beast"), the video starts

pausing every few seconds an

--times skipping over parts

of scenes before

--alogue returns. It's not an issue of the dual-layer format (I've had those issues before, and I know how to deal with them), but a problem that seems to continue for the rest of the movie.

This is a warning to everyone to HANG ONTO YOUR DVD RECEIPTS until you've played the disks.

Now I'm out $30 (and the hour and a half I spent watching the first 3/4 of the movie, stupidly expecting to be able to finish it), and feeling homicidal at being robbed of a work of art by one of my idols. And unlike last time, I don't have a TV network that I can blame.

That's too bad. We just watched the DVD (the copy from the library where I work, purchased at the local Wal-Mart) and the disc was fine. (It was Disc 1 of the two-disc set.) But thanks for the warning!

ooh, Miyazaki! me loves me Miyazaki stuff. It sucks that your disc is messed up. It really was a great movie. (my favorite part was anything having to do with Calcifer). and BTW, if your DVD has them, watch the original Japanese Trailers. They are Hi-Larious.
