okay, is anyone else here a fan of the original dragonlance chronicles? i remember reading and loving the trilogy when i was younger. i bring this up because with the advent of so many comic books and old tv shows and remakes being optioned to new life in feature films, i was wondering if anyone knew if the dragonlance series has been purchased by a studio to possibly make a movie? with the success of the lord of the rings series, there certainly could be a big audience for fantasy/adventure movies of this type and the universe of dragonlance, while probably not as involved as lord of the rings, is certainly still substantial.

I've been a fan of the Dragonlance Chronicles and the universe in general forever.

I think they shouldn't do a big screen movie like LotR because it would always be compared and probably bashed. and I couln't stand that it's LOTS BETTER than LotR. the characters are much more deeply developed and the conversations and action is much more involved and interesting. LotR has the grand story and the highly developed universe but I always get the impression you get to know more about the landscapes and history than the people actually doing the adventuring. I never really cared for any of the characters while reading the books and that's just sad. the movies were good though.

I'd think dragonlance would make a great TV series. lots of interesting characters and interaction. lots of stories already written. adventures with different characters as lead.

you'd need lots of actors but there's not one actor or so who'd have to do all the work so maybe they wouldn't tire of it so much as in series with a clear lead who has to be in every EP full time.
so maybe a series of made for TV movies for the Chronicles and Legends and then a weekly hour long series with different stories about different characters.

that would be really great if it were done right. the original series creators such as Margaret Weis would of course have to watch over the whole project.

The Dragonlance Chronicles is no longer a trilogy. It has four books.

Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Dragons of Winter Night
Dragon of Spring Dawning
Dragons of Summer Flame

But I am a huge fan of the Dragonlance Saga.

Currently I am reading the Kingpriest Trilogy and starting the Minotaur War Trilogy.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Actually the world and characters were created by Tracy Hickman in the 70s as Dungeons and Dragons modules. Then in the 80s TSR went to Hickman and asked him to write Dragonlance books but Hickman didn't have any experience in writing books so they paired him up with Margaret Weis who was also working for TSR at the time in writing adventures for Dungeons and Dragons.

I was happy that they brought back Weis and Hickman to write the War of the Souls Trilogy. That was an awesome trilogy and really brought back my interest into the world after it was pretty much destroy with the Dragons of a New Age Trilogy. I loved the characters from that trilogy like Dhamon (Dhamon Trilogy was good) but the whole storyline was stupid because you knew in the end that the heroes could never beat the dragon overlords. The only thing that could destroy and defeat the dragon overlords would be the gods.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

I would still consider there to be a 'original Dragonlance Chronicles' trilogy, of which Summer Flame isn't a part. Not that it's a bad book, it just doesn't make sense to attach it to that trilogy. The original Chronicles make a trilogy. The Legends, another. Summer Flame is either a stand-alone novel in the same universe, or a part of another trilogy.

As it turns out, I think Dragons of Summer Flame was the last I read of the universe. By this time I was moving more toward Science Fiction rather than fantasy, and the new books just didn't make the same connection as the old ones.
Going back to the well too many times, finding a way to try and bring back the classic characters when they were already gone, and the like.

Still, there's a fond place in my heart for the series, and would love to see it make it to a movie of some sort (or perhaps even a really well done animated miniseries).

In case any one didn't already know, Margaret Weis is a big fan of Firefly. Here is a thread from the OB that contains a link to her schedule. She apparently wears a Firefly shirt to her appearances for a little guerilla marketing.

There were also various posts in the con-reports if anyone cares to search them out.

Dragons of Summer Flame was written about ten years after Dragons of Autumn Twilight. It was published in 1995.

Anyways, Dragons of Summer Flame is the fourth book to the Chronicles. Summer Flame does take place after Legends but for some reason or another it was added to the the Chronicles as Volume 4. I know it doesn't make sense but that is what Weis and Hickman did.

To tell you in a nutshell what happens after Summer Flame (don't read any further if you don't want to know). They brought in Jean Rabe to write the next trilogy called Dragons of a New Age. Pretty much it brings in a bunch of new characters such as Dhamon Grimwulf while still using older characters such as Palin Majere and even the ancient Goldmoon. At the end of the Chaos War, the gods are made to leave and their place dragons called overlords take over. Dragons feed off one another in what is called the Dragon Purge and grow more powerful than anything before plus a few of the dragons are from another world (not from Krynn) so are actually more powerful than Krynnish dragons. They take over. Heroes try to defeat them but cannot. Weis and Hickman come back for the next trilogy called War of the Souls, in which a Takhisis is back on Krynn and tries to take over but then the other gods realize that she is back and try to defeat which ends up with Paladine sacrificing his godhood to make Takhisis mortal so that they can defeat her. But due to an Alliance between Takhisis and the minotaurs, the minotaurs take over a good portion of Krynn after Takhisis is defeated. And that is where I am currently at in the Saga which is a trilogy called the Minotaur Wars.

Wizards of the Coasts is also reprinting all of the original series such as Meeting Sextent, Preludes, Heroes, etc... which is cool that I can now read some of these Dragonlance books written in the late 80s and esrly 90s before I got into Dragonlance.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

I read the first four, the first of the newer trilogy that sprung from that and some of the Preludes ones - oh, and the first of that trilogy of Caramon and Raistlin. I should probably finish what I started really...

JAMIECHAMBERS

I'm possibly the ultimate crossover between Dragonlance and Firefly (other than Margaret Weis!), as I work on the Dragonlance game products every day and am also the guy who made our SERENITY fan-shirts for the Sovereign Press booth at Dragon*Con.

After Dragon*Con and talking about Firefly to co-author and friend, Tracy Hickman, Margaret purchased him a DVD set. A week or so later, Tracy wrote a thank-you note saying that he was having a blast watching the episodes!

If Tracy gives me the okay, I'll re-post his comments here.
