So, question 1: are there fans of this version here?
I am.
Question 2: Anyone here get the fully restored & re-edited 124 min. version with the new 16mm added footage from the Argentina discovery? Is it good?
Question 3 (or maybe 4): Is this REALLY that great of a film that we need MORE footage & length-increasing inter-titles? Can't we just READ the subplots & missing motivations and groove to the colour-tinted visuals & mid-Eighties pounding rock score?

Worm can opened....

JONGSSTRAW

Thanks for the heads up on the dvd. About 25 years ago I shelled out $80 for the Vestron VHS tape of Moroder's version. For some reason that's what it cost, and I gladly paid it.

I love the soundtrack. That's really the reason I bought it in the first place. Moroder brought this thing to life with editing effects, dashes of color, and great themed music. For me it is unwatchable in any other format, unless I want to fall asleep fast.

1 - Yup. I saw this back in 95 I think at the Haymarket cinema in London. But I don't like this version. Firstly because I'm no fan of queen, but secondly because the music is all wrong for the era. Also the tinted specific scenes for 'mood' didn't work for me, but I held out to the end and did enjoy it.

2. Nope

3. Hard to say if the new footage is needed without seeing it, but I must say I'd be curious to see what was found. Just from a historical point of view. It's incredible to think they did something on this scale back in 1927.

I love the whole idea of Metropolis. I have the animated version by Osamu Tezuka too, which is really evocative of the era and thoroughly enjoyable, even if they've tweaked a few things. I'd really recommend it and this version. They compliment each other very well.
