Finally getting around to watching the complete series... Sweet Boneless Christ, this is the most awesome thing I've ever seen! (And that's not just hyperbole)
The Japanese sure do respect their kids' intelligence, huh! This here is college-level stuff! (For me, anyway)
See, this's why I can't watch stupid American cartoons: Crappy artwork (except for Warner Bros) and silly simplistic stories.

Evangelion was never really aimed at kids, though --that's the difference between American and Japanese animation: over here we think "animation" = "for children" (with "adult animation" being something that needs to be deliberately singled out, like Family Guy or The Simpsons). In Japan, anime is made for many different age groups. Evangelion was aimed more toward teenagers and 20-something philosophy majors.

(On the rare occasions when anime movies run in NorAm theatres, it's always fun to watch the clueless parents bringing in their grade-schoolers with no idea what they're in for.)

ObEva: What's your plan for watching the series; you gonna watch the last episode or go with End of Eva (the movie)? Personally, I'm one of the few who actually preferred (and could follow) the series' version of events. The movie was too depressing.

(And when you're done, you'll want to check out the Rebuild movies, and maybe one of the manga spinoffs. It's funny how Shinji grows a bit more of a spine in every iteration.)

Well, not that it takes much, given his complete lack initially, neh ?

While not as philosophical as NGE, you'd also prolly like Last Exile, the story and characters have depth and complexity, and the artwork and animation are glorious, but how could they not be given that it's Range Muratas work.
(NGE, unfortunately, in it's original incarnation suffered from budget issues in this respect, but they did make the best of what they had)

Remember, I collect the rare and underappreciated works - the Genre is not without it's version of franchise-milking shovelware, often so badly translated it's incomprehensible, but like anything else, Sturgeons Law applies, and a good bit of that 10% finds its way into my hands.

Yep, Last Exile was glorious, but NGE is the only one I've seen that leaves me slack-jawed, staring wide-eyed into space for days afterwards, thinking "How did they come up with all that?"
