Frank Frazetta, an illustrator whose vivid colors and striking brushstrokes conjured up fantastic worlds of musclebound heroes fighting with broad swords and battle axes to defend helpless women from horrible beasts, died on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 82.

The death, caused by a stroke, was confirmed by Rob Pistella and Steve Ferzoco, his business managers. In a telephone interview, Mr. Pistella said that Mr. Frazetta, who had a history of strokes, had returned from a Mother’s Day dinner with his family on Sunday night and fell ill. Emergency medical services were called and Mr. Frazetta was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

Frank Frazetta was the undisputed master of heroic fantasy art and will be missed by all that love his art. As a youth I can remember being drawn across the book store by his awesome art on the Conan covers and later his covers for Karl Wagner’s Kane stories. I think his illustrations of the Lord of the Rings had a huge influence on the look of the movies. Even his Star Wars movie poster is a classic along with other memorable movie posters. If you get a chance make sure and watch the Frazetta documentary Painting with Fire, its well done and gives a good picture of the man, his art and those influenced by him.

I thought you said 'horrible breasts'... Never mind.

Frazetta was my inspiration to take art class. Imagine going to school to star at strippers nekked in the classroom. What a concept!

Frazetta's women were heroic or helpless depending on the story he was illustrating. Frazetta took the time to read the books he illustrated so he knew what was appropriate for the cover art.

I think I like Frazetta's pen and ink the best, he was a master as seen below.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Sad news indeed. The world of art, more specifically sci fi / fantasy art, is a darker place today with his passing.

R.I.P. Frank.
