As much as I liked this episode the first time around, it didn't really come together for me until I watched it a few times. The pieces were all there, but I was enjoying it on the level of its absurdity. But after thinking of this episode in context with "Bushwhacked", there's a definite undercurrent of faith in many of these episodes.

Here's my review for Firefly 1.7: "Jaynestown":

Overall, this episode starts out as an absurd comedy and quickly develops into an exploration on the meaning of faith. As usual, character is king for this series, and just about every scene is predicated on the nature of the people involved. With the abrupt end of the series, it’s hard to know how important these events would have become, but as it stands, it’s still a strong episode.

this was one of my favorite episodes right off the bat...
the exploration of hero-worship and faith, as being something that fulfills what each of us needs in our own lives, and has nothing to do with who or what it is we hold up as our hero, or the thing worthy of worship...
Book said that 'you don't fix faith, it fixes you'
And the mudders found the strength they needed in life by admiring Jayne, even tho everyone knows (including Jayne) that he isn't worth anyone's admiration....

religion may be the opiate of the masses, but that doesn't mean it isn't necessary, or that it doesn't have value.

Plus...a show that can discuss these sensative topics with humor and gun play? All good!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I liked this episode because it gave us a closer look at Jayne and a bit of his past. It was interesting to note that there is more to Jayne than the big, rough mercenary exterior would imply. It showed us that Jayne has a soul and that he can be touched by the actions of others even if they are misguided. Remorse is not something one would think Jayne capable of upon first look.

Though not my favorite episode, it is in the top 5.

This ep's got a special place in my heart cause Jayne's nemesis is somewhat of a throwback to one of my fav cartoon characters - Yosemite Sam.

The words "You panty-waist idjit!" just left me on the floor, a moment I'll treasure forever.

* The Real Me blinks in surprise! *

Stitch as...

Yosemite Sam?

YES!

There was something familiar to me about that character, but I could never put my finger on it!

Though not part of the main story, River had a great part in this episode.

My friends and I sing Jayne's song quite often. We even have guitar accompaniment! I enjoyed the first bit of this episode, but the last bit kind of bothered me, and I can't even pinpoint why.

Still, a good episode.

I sort of see this episode as an exploration of Joseph Campbell premise: that we need religion to access the heros within us. We're built that way, which is why all cultures have religion. I don't know how much I buy into it, but this episode certainly made a case for it. I enjoyed it, because it seemed like sort of a turning point for Jayne. He realized that he wasn't worth worshiping and had a momentary desire to better himself. Of course, that didn't last long, since it wasn't long after that that he tried to sell Simon and River.

ha, i was writing a big "analysis" thing on the theme of Faith in this episode for the Episode section ... but looks like most of what I wanted to say is already here.

i would like to say that in the last scene, Jayne voices a question that many people ask about Faith and Religion ... how people seem blind to the real, cold hard truth, even if it is right there in front of him.

Don't make no sense. ... Weren't a one of them understood what happened out there - hell, they're probably stickin' that statue right back up. ... Don't know why that eats at me so...

and Mal's answer is nice 'n short.
