Okay, the DVD set shows a scene from Objects in Space that it claims was aired with the show on FOX but NOT on the DVD version. Trouble is, that scene WAS in the DVD episode (unless there was some subtle difference I missed). The comment on the deleted scene says something about the comment about Inara leaving being unnecessary now on the DVD set, to stay true to Joss' vision. I'm so confused!

There is a difference. It was reshot with some dialogue taken out. The original aired scene had Mal and Inara talking her leaving. The new DVD release scene only had them talking about subtley that she was leaving but didn't go right out there and say it because it was already said in Heart of Gold which was never aired.

About this scene: I personally feel that Joss made a mistake in removing dialogue from the DVD version. The reason is that, even though Inara tells Mal she's leaving at the very end of 'Heart of Gold', the info contained in this scene as it was originally shot would have been a great (and needed) follow-up. It creates a feeling of continuity that OiS sadly lacks, and removing it is, IMO, a disservice.

the dvd release is the version joss whedon always intended the series to be. the scenes where deleted due to the show being axed and in the end the scenes where shortend,reshoted or just cut out.

I KNOW that the DVD is as Joss intended the series to be, but in this particular case I think he should have kept the scene as it appeared in OiS when it was originally aired rather than removing it.

Edit: A Browncoat over on the TrekBBS just pointed out that the dialogue in the scene as it appears in the DVD (not the deleted scene) does follow up on the end of HoG, so my main gripe with Joss changing the scene is no longer relevant :)

Version of the scene on the DVD:

As you can see the DVD version is a continuation of the storyline of Inara leaving from Heart of Gold. The FOX version is not.

Since Heart of Gold never aired, the original version would not make sense (sort of like airing Serenity LAST). So it was reshot to make it more understandable.

Her comment of "I don't know why I haven't left already" is just a general frustration of Mal being Mal. It also could have been a way to deal with the ending of Heart of Gold if it eventually aired.

The line 'I don't know why I haven't left already' IS in the reshot scene. The FOX version was reshot, the DVD version was the original.

The line doesn't make sense in the original version because Mal didn't provoke her. They were being civil towards each other. Where would it fit?

Okay. I thought the scene in the DVD was reshot. And I personally don't think the line 'I don't know why I haven't left already' is dependant on Inara getting po-ed with Mal.
